Another eventful weekend in sports. Thankfully the top moments have all be recorded and are online for every one's enjoyment. Here are the videos of the weekend.
Victor Cruz was both hero and goat on Sunday. First he was a hero for making this incredible catch against the Seattle Osprey.
Then Cruz was a goat for not coming up with this catch which lead to the game-winning score for the Seattle Osprey.
Hockey cheerleaders are the dumbest idea ever. It's the kind of idea teams use to goose up their standings only the cheerleaders aren't enough to get people into the stands. That's why I laugh at this ice cheerleader falling down on the rink. (Via The Big Lead)
My favorite moment of the weekend involved a punter. During the LSU-Florida game, Les Miles does what he does best, call for trick plays involving the kicker or punter. This time it involved punter Brad Wing taking the ball and running into the end zone. One problem though, Wing styled his touchdown before the end zone and was called for a penalty so the touchdown didn't count. It still makes me laugh though that a punter is styling against Florida. Ah Soccer. Where would this sport be without riots involving fire bombs? Certainly it would be irrelevant in this country. (Via The Sports Grid)

USA Women's Soccer Completes Comeback In The Home Run Derby
DRESDEN, Germany- In what is being called the "Miracle on Grass, Part 2" the USA women's soccer team made an incredible comeback in the Home Run Derby at the World Cup in Germany against Brazil.
"I've worked hard for so long," says Abby Wambach, "and today feels like I've achieved everything. I'll remember this day for the rest of my life."
Wambach will indeed remember this day forever as she hit the game-tying home run in the derby, concluding the incredible comeback for the US women.
"It was a slider over the middle of the plate," says Wambach.
What seemed impossible, the US women literally had the entire world against them in the derby versus Brazil. There was the horrendous officiating by Nick Patrick. Brazilian players pretending to be hit by pitches. And an overall lack of interest in the home run derby.
"Women play soccer?" asks President Obama. "I guess good for them. Now excuse me I have to play my 1,234 round of golf since taking office. Fuck I love being President. This is much better than a "real" job."

The Qatar World Cup Will Be Like Something Out Of A Movie
I remember as a kid watching that terrible Sylvester Stallone movie "Judge Dredd" and being impressed at what type of gadgets we could have in the future. "You mean we could have flying motorcycles?" "There will be robots that will dispense Coors Light and a Cup of Noodles?" Sadly there aren't any flying motorcycles or robots that dispense both Coors Light and a Cup of Noodles, but that doesn't mean technology hasn't evolved or couldn't evolve. I bring this all up because Qatar has some wild ideas about improving technology when they host the 2022 World Cup.
Qatar was a controversial choice to host the World Cup back last December. One of the main concerns about Qatar was the fact it will be extremely hot in that country when the World Cup will be played. Don't worry though Qatar might have a solution to that problem. An "Artificial Cooling Cloud"!
Pick whatever movie about the future as you want, but that picture definitely looks like something out of 'Judge Dredd' or 'Blade Runner'. And could you imagine sitting in that stadium and seeing something hover over head and realize it's a flying air conditioner? Good look with these grand ideas Qatar.

Bods from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department at Qatar University have unveiled their design for an ‘artificial cloud’ that could be used to temper the desert country’s blistering heat during the 2022 World Cup.That's one expensive air conditioner.
According to the spiel, the cloud is positioned by remote control, made of 100% light carbonic materials, filled with helium, fuelled by four solar-powered engines (I imagine there’s a lot of that knocking about in Qatar) and it’s primary function will be to hover above the various stadiums in order to ‘filter both direct and indirect UV rays, as well as controlling temperatures at pitch level’ – all at a cost of around $500,000.

Video of the Day: Greatest Soccer Celebration Ever
Iceland brings the world the greatest soccer celebration ever. Specifically Stjarnan "goes fishing" for his teammates. Apperantly though, this isn't Stjarnan's only choreographed celebration. There are many more.
I'm still laughing. The guy is even flopping like a fish caught.

Pros & Cons of Soccer
With the World Cup rapping up this weekend, I thought I would take a look at the pros and cons of Soccer. Now I've never been the biggest Soccer fan. I've enjoyed the World Cup because I love countries against countries and the event only takes place every four years. That's one of the reasons why I love the Olympics. It only takes place every four years. There are other reason's though to love Soccer and reason's why I hate Soccer.Pro, Announcers- Ian Darke has reached Gus Johnson's level of love here in the states. Darke brings everything you want from your announcers. He brings passion, energy, and emotion to every match he calls. Darke and the rest of announcers (Alexi Lalas excluded) have made the World Cup ten times more enjoyable.
Con, Soccer Terms- I hate the terms Nil, Pitch, and equalizer. I especially hate the term, match. When I think of the word match and sports, I think of a boxing match, wrestling match, and tennis match. A match is between two individuals. Soccer is a team sport so they play a game. Also is there a more snobbish word that equalizer? When I hear people say equalizer, I imagine them smoking a cigarette and drinking a $400 dollar bottle of wine.
Pro, Length of Games- I love the fact that normally soccer games don't last much longer than two hours. What other sporting events can we name that don't last over two hours? Soccer games last two hours maybe two and half hours if they go to overtime. They're short and sweet.
Con, How Time is Kept- It's ridiculous that a referee keeps time with a stop watch. They're not running the 40-yard dash out there.
Pro, No TV-Timeouts- The NFL drives me nuts with the TV-timeouts. Nothing is more appalling than the NFL taking a timeout after a touchdown is scored then taking a timeout after the kickoff. Thankfully you don't have that soccer. In fact the only time a game goes to commercial during a soccer game is during halftime. I love that.

Con, Soccer Fans- And I thought Yankee fans were condescending douchebags. Have you ever met a Soccer fan? They wear scarfs and drink at pubs. And if you don't call the field a "pitch" they let you hear about it. They're rude, mean, and blunt. Also they make a Philadelphia sports riot look like a walk in the park.
Con, Stoppage Time- Getting back to the point of the referee using a stop watch to keep time, nothing is more ridiculous that stoppage time. After each game the referee decides how much time was used for substitutions, injury, and other factors of the game to decide how much stoppage time at the end of the half's. So the refs are basically estimating how stoppage time there will be at the end of each half. Tremendous!
Con, Too Much Power For Officials- We complain all the time about the officials here in the states, but damn the officials in soccer have way too much power in my opinion. With the power to control the clock and add to the fact there isn't instant reply like there is in football and basketball and you have a toxic situation.

Con, Players Faking Injuries to Milk The Clock- This all goes back to the players not knowing how much time is left in the game, but players faking injuries to milk the clock is disgusting. There is flopping in the NBA, but a call is not made every time a player flops. In soccer a player flops on the ground and is carried off the field on a WWII stretcher reach the sidelines and hop off of the stretcher like everything is fine. I don't respect this about the sport.
Con, Penalty Kicks- The World Cup in my opinion is like one big playoff. Then why the hell can games end on penalty kicks? Hockey has penalty shots at the end of regular season games, which I hate but accept, but hockey doesn't use penalty shots at the end of playoff games. It's absurd that a game's outcome at the World Cup can be determined by penalty kicks. That's like determining the outcome of a World Series game with Home Run Derby or the Super Bowl with a Punt, Pass, and Kick competition. If a regular soccer game wants to end with penalty kicks that's fine, but not at the World Cup.
At the end of the day I respect the World Cup and it's meaning, but still have little respect for the actual sport. I love the little nuances such as no TV-timeouts and the announcers, but I hate stoppage time, penalty kicks, and the referee's influence. The World Cup is enjoyable to watch every four years, but don't expect me to watch a MLS game or a EPL game. And yes I called it a game, fuck off Soccer fans.

World Cup, Day 1: Open Thread
I've made it quite clear that I'm not a soccer fan. The World Cup greatly intrigues me. I will never watch English Premiere League or the MLS, but I will watch countries face each other in battle. Today is the kickoff of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Uruguay vs. France is later today and South Africa vs. Mexico is happening at the moment. Since I know nothing about the teams, players, or strategies here's a preview for today's games by SB Nation.Uraguay vs. France kickoffs at 2PM ET/ 11AM PT. Use this thread to comment about that match and about the South Africa vs. Mexico match. Have a good day.
