Farewell Shawn Michaels

I know what you must be thinking, not another wrestling post. Sorry, I had to do it. Last night Shawn Michaels gave his farewell speech to the WWE audience. The same Shawn Michaels that has wrestled in the WWE since I was born. The same Shawn Michaels who never wrestled a boring match in his entire life. And last night the same Shawn Michaels who gave on the best promos/farewell speeches that you'll ever see.

At the beginning of the speech, the Undertaker came out and showed a tip of the hat to Michaels. A fitting end to one of most memorable rivalries in Wrestling. The crowd gave the usual chants of "one more match", "Thank you Shawn", and "Please don't go." I can't think of another wrestler who is more respected by the fans than Michaels. Shawn then thanked Triple H for their years of friendship. He thanked the whole cast of crew than run the WWE from the cameramen to producers to the people who put together video packages. He also thanked Bret Hart and apologized his past behavior. Michaels admitted to being a bad person, someone who let drugs and alcohol control every aspect of his life. Very moving. Yes, he even thanked Mr. McMahon for putting up with him for the past 22 years.

The most emotional moments of his speech though was when the crowd started chanting "one more match." Michaels talked about how it's the norm for a wrestler to "retire" only to comeback and wrestle another match. He said he wasn't going to do that. That he was going to live to his word and stay retired. I would usually roll my eyes at this part of the speech, but I didn't last night. Michaels seemed contrite about staying retired. His children are getting older and he wants to spend more time with them. Also he's a born-again Christian and spends a lot of time in Church participating in various Church groups.

This was a great speech by one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time. I will definitely miss Shawn Michaels. He's been a part of my childhood along with countless others.

Thank You Shawn!

Wrestlemania XXVI Recap

Here are the results from last night's Wrestlemania.

- Yoshi Tatsu won a 26 man battle royal in the dark match
- WWE Unified Tag Team Champions ShoMiz (The Big Show & The Miz) defeated R-Truth & - John Morrison to retain their titles when Show pinned Morrison
- Randy Orton defeated Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes in a triple threat match when he pinned DiBiase
- Jack Swagger won the Money In The Bank ladder match
- Triple H defeated Sheamus
- Rey Mysterio defeated CM Punk, so Mysterio does not have to join the Straight Edge Society
- Bret Hart defeated Vince McMahon in a no holds barred match (Vince made it a lumberjack match, claimed to have paid off Bret's family, and brought out the Hart Dynasty and all of Bret's surviving siblings as the lumberjacks. Bret revealed that they told him and agreed so Vince would pay them in advance.)
- World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho defeated Edge to retain his title (After the match, - Edge speared Jericho off the announcers' tables through the barricade)
- Alicia Fox, Vickie Guerrero, Michelle McCool, Layla, & Maryse defeated Beth Phoenix, Eve Torres, Gail Kim, Kelly Kelly, & Mickie James when Guerrero pinned Kelly
- John Cena defeated WWE Champion Batista by submission with the STF to win the title
- The Undertaker defeated Shawn Michaels after a jumping tombstone piledriver to retire him

My instant reaction to Wrestlemania XXVI was meh. I thought the show was very disappointing. One of the worst Wrestlemania's that I can remember watching. Then I started thinking about the show more and thought there were factors why this Wrestlemania felt disappointing. Then I re-watched the entire card again and I can point to several factors why this show felt like a disappointment.

Lack of Crowd Energy: Maybe because the early matches were awful maybe because the crowd noise didn't translate on TV until the Cena-Batista match but the lack of crowd energy sucked the energy out of the entire card. I felt like I was watching your average Raw show. When the crowd energy doesn't translate onto TV it sucks the life out of the matches.

Lack of Jim Ross: I'm sorry, but Wrestlemania isn't the same without Good Ole JR. Jim Ross has been out of action since October with another bout of Bells Palsy. So last night Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and Matt Striker did the announcing for Wrestlemania. Lawler seemed lost without JR, Cole screams during the matches no matter what, and Matt Striker isn't experienced enough at announcing to be calling a Wrestlemania. It just didn't feel like a Wrestlemania without Jim Ross.

Lack of Chemistry Between Edge and Chris Jericho: I along with many others, thought this match was going to bring the house down. You have both tremendous in-ring performers battling it out against each other. Only one problem though, the chemistry was off. There was just something off during this entire match. Either both guys weren't feeling it or they were both concerned about Edge's previous leg injury that he came back too early from? Then the match ended with an thud. The refs was knocked out, Jericho hit Edge with the belt and then the Codebreaker and the match ended Jericho retains. Edge speared Jericho off the announcers table after the match, but it was way too late the crowd wasn't feeling it and neither was I. The disappointment of this match might have ruined the night for a lot of wrestling fans.

Expectations: I don't know what I was expecting between the No Holds Barred match between Bret Hart-Vince McMahon. Maybe I was expecting McMahon to beat the living hell of Hart early, then Bret coming back in a fury to beat the living hell out of McMahon and winning the match. This didn't happen. At the beginning of the match McMahon changed the stipulations. He said the match would feature Lumberjacks and a special guest referee and those people would be the Hart family. Then Bret turned the tables on Vince and said the Hart family would always side with Bret. Then you know what happens from there. This match turned into a huge squash match featuring Bret beating the living hell out of McMahon.

These are just some of the aspects of last nights Wrestlemania that made the show feel disappointing. There was though some aspects of the show that made this a fantastic show.

Hindsight 20/20: After sleeping a night, I have no idea what I was expecting between McMahon and Hart. One guy is eligible to collect Social Security and the other guy suffered a stroke 8 years ago. Also didn't everyone only want to see McMahon get the crap beat out of him by Hart? That's exactly what happened. McMahon was absolutely squashed in this match, making a lot of people happy.

Cena vs. Batista: A highly entertaining match that I didn't think both guys were capable of. Cena's Air Force Drill Team entrance was one of the coolest entrances ever. They each hit their spots and there was a least a couple false finishes. Both guys were surprisingly athletic and the crowd finally picked up their energy level. This was a really good match.

Quote of the Night: During the terrible Diva's Tag match, Vickie Guerrero attempted a Frog Splash in honor of her husband Eddie. Only she didn't quite get all of it which prompted Michael Cole to call that move a "Hog Splash." High comedy I tell you. This match between the Diva's prompted the Brando Corollary: something said or done that is truly awful is actually quite funny.

Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels: What else can be said about this match? It was the main event and it lived up to that status. Undertaker kept his Wrestlemania streak alive by pinning Michaels and effectively ending his career. I really don't know if this match was as good as last year's match between Undertaker vs. Michaels. Both matches featured false finishes and both matches featured Undertaker getting destroyed out of the ring. This year, Michaels landed a Moonsault onto a prone Undertaker on the announcers table. It was a great spot that made this match even better. This match was fast paced match that saw the Undertaker dominate the majority of it. It had a fantastic ending which included the Undertaker and Michaels shaking hands at the end with Michaels crying after he left the ring.

All in all, this was a great Wrestlemania. This is why I didn't post anything about the event until I slept. While Wrestlemania had a couple of dull moments (which Wrestlemania hasn't had dull moments?) it was saved in the end by the Cena-Batista and Undertaker-Michaels match. In the end, I have to give this Wrestlemania a B.

Wrestlemania XXVI Preview

This is going to be a busy weekend. Not only will there be four Elite 8 games in the NCAA Tournament, but wrestling's extravaganza is this weekend. That's right, Wrestlemania 26 is this weekend.

It's Sunday in Glendale, Arizona starting at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT and here's my preview and predictions for the night.

(Note: I'm going to watch Wrestlemania XXVI on a stream and will have a full recap of the night and Jim Ross quotes the following Monday. Also there will be a open thread for anyone who wants to comment.)

Money in the Bank Ladder Match: Christian vs Dolph Ziggler vs. Kane vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Jack Swagger vs. MVP vs. Matt Hardy vs. Evan Bourne vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Kofi Kingston
This match has quickly become my favorite wrestling match every year. A quick recap of how this match works. This is like a traditional ladder match, except there are multiple contestants. There is a briefcase hanging from the rafters over the center of the ring. Whatever contestant grabs the brief case is guaranteed a championship match whenever he wants in any given year. This year's match features multiple high flyers and Kane (Why is Kane in this match every year? He's slow and awkward in normal matches. How does he fit in with this match?) As always I expect Shelton Benjamin to steal the show and not win the match. In the end though, I expect Christian to win this match then challenge either Edge or Chris Jericho for the World Championship at the end of the show. Prediction: Christian

Rey Mysterio vs CM Punk (If Mysterio loses, he must join the Straight Edge Society)

You have to love matches with stipulations! Okay maybe not. I'll be honest, I haven't watched Smackdown in a very long time and haven't watch a single minute of the build up to this match. Apparently Punk turned heel and walks out to the audience and denounces them for not living a straight edge life. Now Punk wants Mysterio to join his Straight Edge Society. Whatever. I'm watching this match because both Punk and Mysterio are highly entertaining to watch in the ring. Prediction: Punk

Triple Threat Match: Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes vs Ted DiBiase
I'm just happy Orton isn't in the main event. He's ruined the last two Wrestlemania's for me with his stiff performance with a microphone and in-ring work. This is your classic "We've run out of ideas what to do with this group, so let's turn the other two guys against the leader match." This is a good match to run to the fridge to get something to eat and drink. I couldn't be less interested in this match. Prediction: Orton

WWE Unified Tag Team Championship: ShoMiz (The Big Show and The Miz) (c) vs John Morrison and R-Truth
I still don't get the popularity of The Miz? He was on The Real World and now he one half of the Tag Team champions and the United States Champion? Then you have the Big Show who has always sucked in the ring and has always lack charisma. Then you have John Morrison who can't cut a promo to save him but is one hell of a wrestler. And then you have R-Truth, aka Ron Killings, you has been buried by the WWE since his return. Also the WWE usues R-Truth the only way they know how to use African-American wrestlers, namely having them dance around the ring and rap. I'm surprised a minority wrestler hasn't sued the WWE yet for discrimination. Anyways this is another match I don't give a sh*t about. Prediction: ShoMiz

Triple H vs Sheamus

Another snoozer of a match. At this point unless Triple H is teaming with Shawn Michaels, I don't really care about him and his matches. I guess you can call it Triple H fatigue. This is your typical "WWE needs to push a new star that no one likes so have Triple H lose to him at Wrestlemania to pump up his credentials match." Prediction: Sheamus will be pale and win. Triple H will look sunburn from his trips to the tanning parlor and will lose.

No Holds Barred: Bret Hart vs Vince McMahon
As Good Ole JR would say, "buisness is about to pick up." This is the match everyone has wanted to see for 13 years. Every wrestling fan knows about the Montreal Screwjob, but here's the video in case you didn't know. Of course this match would have been even better if we didn't already know that Bret Hart retired because of post-concussion syndrome. I don't know if I should watch this match or feel depressed. Prediction: Hart

World Heavyweight Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs Edge
This should be a fun match. Jericho is working as a heel and is at the top of his game promo wise. Edge is working as a babyface, he's much better as a heel, looking for revenge against Jericho for talking so much bleep about him since his injury. Both guys are as good as is gets in-ring wise. Should be a fun match. Prediction: Jericho

WWE Championship: Batista (c) vs John Cena
While Jericho vs. Edge should be a beauty in-ring wise, Batista vs. Cena is anything but beautiful. I used to be a huge John Cena guy, but he's reached Triple H status in "I've seen him so many times that I can't stand watching another one of his matches." The buildup for this match though has been outstanding. Batista works well as a heel and his promo's have been great leading up to this match. Prediction: Cena because McMahon hates us all.

Streak vs Career, No Disqualifation or Count Out: The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels
Alright another stipulation match! No matter the stipulations it's going to be real hard to live up to the match we saw last year between these two. The match last year at Wrestlemania was an all-time classic. They've both built up this match perfectly so this match should steal the show. Prediction: Undertaker will retrain the streak and Michaels will retire. Michaels has nothing left to prove and I don't see him coming back after this match. Of course this is wrestling, so Michaels will probably be at next year's Wrestlemania fighting Triple H.

Once again there will be an open thread up for Wrestlemania XXVI and a full recap including JR's quotes on Monday.

Those Wild and Crazy Rasslers

I was only going to post The Links section today and that would be my only post for the day. I had things to do and people to see. That was until I saw this story on TMZ.

Apparently wrestlers Chris Jericho and Greg "Hurricane" Helms were picked up in Kentucky for public intoxication. But get this, they were arrested outside of a gas station and Matt Hardy was with them until he fled on foot. Things apparently got violent and Helms struck three people including Jericho.
We're told several people were in a taxi cab with Helms and Jericho when things allegedly got violent around 4 AM yesterday.

Cops say they spoke to several members of the group who told them Helms struck three people -- including Jericho, a man named Gary Kelley and a female passenger named Ashley Storer.

Witnesses told cops Helms ran from the scene right after the violent incident but returned to the gas station soon after, where he -- along with Jericho --war arrested for being drunk in public.

Cops say Helms was not arrested for the alleged attack because the alleged victims have not pressed charges -- a requirement for an arrest in Kentucky if the police do not witness the attack.

Ashley told cops she did not want to file charges against Helms -- but Kelley told police he's mulling it over and may go after the wrestler.
That was first reported earlier today. The story was then updated to say that wrestler Matt Hardy was with Jericho and Helms during this altercation, but apparently fled the scene.
Witnesses told cops Hardy was in a taxi with Jericho, Helms and several others Wednesday morning -- when Helms allegedly struck three people ... including one female.

Witnesses say Hardy took off on foot -- just like Helms allegedly did -- when the cab driver pulled over at a Kentucky gas station and called 911.

We're told Helms came back to the scene and was arrested -- but Hardy was gone for good. Cops are not pursuing any sort of action against Hardy.
Remember the Mattitude era, when Shannon Moore was his "follower"? Good times. Not so good times for Jericho and Helms. While I can't see the WWE punishing Jericho, after all he's one of the best promo and in-ring performers for the WWE, I could see the company punishing Helms and Hardy. It'll be interesting to see how the WWE handles this situation now that the company has went to a more kid friendly environment, instead of the "Attitude Era."

Legendary wrestling manager Captain Lou Albano has passed away today at age 76.

Captain Lou Albano was an instrumental piece of why the WWF became so popular in the 1980's. Albano appeared in Cyndi Lauper's music video "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Albano's appearance in this video brought national publicity to the WWF during the Rock 'n Wrestling era which lead to Wrestlemania which lead to the WWF going national.

Here is a video of Captain Lou Albano making an appearance on a Philadelphia TV station telling kids to not use drugs.
