Here's Something I Never Expected

I never thought I would see the day Oakland A's GM Billy Beane do this....

This move surprises me because Beane is the ultimate "don't put too much value in relievers/closers" guy. Hell he basically wrote the book about letting closers leave or trading them when they still had value. Now he's the guy who's trading for a closer with 11 million left on his contract when he could have taken a flier on Grant Balfour or Brian Wilson in free agency? Shocking.

As for the Orioles, Jemile Weeks could be a steal for them. Weeks had a great debut for the A's in 2011 but fell off badly in 2012. He can still improve if he becomes a little more patient at the plate. He'll only be 27 when the season debuts and could become an important bench player for the Orioles and probably even start at 2nd base when Brian Roberts gets hurt again.

Just a perplexing move by Beane.

Trade Deadline (Update)

The trade deadline is less that 5 hours away (it ends at 11 AM PT for me). This post will just be for updates on who gets traded and who doesn't. I'm going to time mark the updates on Pacific time. If I miss anything or you have an opinion on the trade please do leave a comment.

Last Night, Chicago traded Jake Peavy to Boston who traded Jose Iglesias to Detroit because Jhonny Peralta is about to be suspended and Detroit sent Avisail Garcia to Chicago. Garcia is a typical White Sox hitter, low OBP. He'll fit right in with Chicago's group of hackers.

Update: kt1000 filled in again while I was away at meetings and doctor's appointments. (Thanks kt1000) Here's what happened:

- The Orioles trades Hoes for Bud Norris.

- The Dodgers traded for the backup of the backup catcher from the Twins.

- Ian Kennedy went to San Diego for relievers.

- Justin Maxwell was traded to Kansas City for some reason.

- The Giants didn't trade anyone because when you can hold onto assets from a crappy team, you have to do it.

Diamondbacks Send Bad Soldier Away

This morning the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Justin Upton and Chris Johnson to Atlanta for Martin Prado, Randall Delgado, Nick Ahmed, Zeke Spurill, and Brandon Drury. When this trade was first announced I thought the Braves fleeced Arizona. Dave Cameron at Fangraphs though says this trade should work for both sides and since he knows more about baseball than I do I'll trust his judgement. Still though I don't like a team that trades a player under their control for a few years for a player with only one year of team control.

That's not what is really bothering me about this trade though. What really bothers is that Arizona traded Upton for being a "bad soldier". You have to know the back story to the Arizona situation.

Upton isn't the only player or broadcaster that has feuded with Arizona front office. Darron Sutton the Diamondbacks broadcaster was pulled from the TV broadcast last season because Sutton wasn't wearing one of their team issued shirts on the broadcast. Sutton wanted to look like a professional and wear a suit and the Diamondbacks sad no. That should tell you right away that the people in that front office are nuts.

Then you have the owner last season questioning when Stephen Drew would return. Basically he called him a "pussy" for not coming back from his ankle injury as fast as Posey despite the fact Posey got hurt a few months ahead of Drew. Sure enough the Diamondbacks traded Drew and have had a hole at shortstop ever since. And Cliff Pennington isn't going to fill it.

When the owner blasted Drew he also blasted Upton saying,"I think Justin is an enigma at this point," Kendrick told KGME. "I know he had an injury (thumb) early on and maybe a little bit of a nagging injury. But he's played. He's certainly not the Justin Upton that he has been in the past and that we would expect of him. He's 24 years old and it's time for him to be a consistent performer and right now this year he's not been that."

And with that the Diamondbacks did all they could to trade Upton. They tried to trade him at the trade deadline last season. They tried to trade him all this off season until today. The Diamondbacks traded Upton because they perceived him to be a "bad solider". It's why they dumped Drew and why they dumped Sutton.

That's just plain ridiculous to me. Seriously you're trading a young powerful outfielder because he's an "enigma"? Because he couldn't quite recover from an "nagging injury"? Guess what there are players who are "enigma's" and there are players who get "nagging injuries" that they can't quite recover from during the season. That doesn't mean you should trade him away.

Now that being said I couldn't be happier Arizona traded away Upton. That's 20 games of not going against a right-handed masher who can catch everything hit to him in the outfield. So congrats Arizona for trading away a young superstar!

Yep, The Lakers Are Still The Lakers

If I needed another reason to hate the Lakers, this is it.

Lakers Get: Dwight Howard, Chris Duhon, Earl Clark
76ers Get: Andrew Bynum, Jason Richardson
Nuggets Get: Andre Iguodala
Magic Get: Crap

Let's break this down a litter farther.

Magic: Amazing to me the Magic held out as long as they did trading Howard and they still got shit back for him. Not even the "protected" draft picks are that great because they're "protected" meaning if the either the Lakers or Philly become bad enough that they fall into the lottery, they keep the picks and the Magic get nothing. The Magic also wanted to get rid of their salary cap space clogging contracts and didn't even get rid of the worst one, Hedo. Add to the fact they didn't get Bynum and the Magic might have pulled off the worst trade in all of sports history.

Nuggets: The Nuggets sneaked into this trade and grabbed Iguodala creating what could be one of the funnier teams to watch next season. Lawson, Faried, Javale, Andre Miller, Gallinari, and Iguodala is going to be great fun to watch. Too bad the Nuggets will still not be able to get out of the first round..........

76ers: There are pros and cons to this trade

Con- Bynum and Doug Collins smells like trouble. Collins, a notorious asshole, teaming up with someone who trolls the shit out of his own coaches has disaster written all over it. I can only imagine Bynum doing this leading Collins to do this. I might buy League Pass just to witness this moment. You know it's going to happen.

Pro- Philly has a history of adopting troublemakers. Broad Street Bullies, Iverson, Lenny Dykstra, etc. Bynum couldn't pick a better city to play for.

Con- Philly fans turn on Bynum the first time he gets hurt or they have enough of his act. Then this will end badly no matter what. (And once Philly fan turns, it's over. See: TO, JD Drew, Lindross)

Pro- Bynum instantly makes this team interesting to watch. Philly made the playoffs last year but they weren't always the funniest or most interesting team to watch. Bynum at least makes them interesting.

Lakers: Like the Sixers there are pros and cons to this deal.

Pro- Lakers receive one of the 5 best players in the league and the best center of the league when there aren't a lot of centers in the NBA at the moment. Lakers also get Howard in his prime, will keep him during his prime, and then can get rid of him when he's no longer useful and trade for Anthony Davis (I'll guarantee Davis somehow ends up with the Lakers in 8 years). I hate the Lakers.

Con- Howard is coming off back surgery. He's a professional athlete and will probably recover from this and not have to worry about it again. (Just my luck Howard will never have a back problem again.) Still though it's back surgery. Bad backs usually don't go away.

Pro- Somehow the Lakers kept Pau Gasol. So not only do the Lakers have someone who can play 5 feet in front of the basket, but they also kept one of the few players who legitimately can play away from the basket because he has low post moves. I hate the Lakers.

Con- Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant are the combined age of my father.

Pro- Nash pick-and-rolling with Howard and Gasol.

Con- Bryant still jacking up 25 shots a night and forgetting about Howard and Gasol. (What am I saying? This is actually a pro!)

It's amazing but the Lakers are still the Lakers. If there's a player they really want, they'll get him somehow unless Stern vetoes the trade. This is a big reason why I've always had a love/hate relationship with the NBA. Love the athleticism and beauty of the NBA, hate the fact there are only a couple of teams each year that are contenders. The Lakers are a contender with this move.

Giants Acquire Clubhouse Cancer Jose Guillen

10 teams in 13 years. That's Jose Guillen's track record as a Major League Player. And for whatever reason the Giants decided to trade for him today. A noted clubhouse cancer who has been suspended for steroid use will now be joining the Giants. That's just great. Darth Vader sums up what I think about this trade.

Baseball Update: Trade Deadline Looming

The baseball season is officially at the All-Star break. With the trade deadline looming at July 31st a lot of contenders will look to bolster their rosters with talent to help them contend for the rest of the season. Cliff Lee was the first big name player traded last Friday when he was dealt to Texas. There will be more players on the move and more teams looking to add simple elements to their team such as bullpen help.

Corey Hart- With the Brewers heading nowhere, Milwaukee may be looking to move all-star right fielder Corey Hart for pitching prospects. When the Giants were in Milwaukee last week, there were talks that the Giants would trade Jonathon Sanchez for Hart. Nothing ever materialized and both teams seem to have moved on. Now the Tampa Bay Rays have shown interest in Hart. With the Rays two games out of first in the AL East and leading the AL Wild Card, the Rays are showing interest in Hart. Depending on what pitching prospects the Rays are willing to send to Milwaukee, this deal could happened. Wherever Hart goes, hopefully he shields his daughter from a beer bath.

Roy Oswalt- With Lee off the market, Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt has suddenly become a hot commodity for a trade. With Jake Peavy injured again, the White Sox will try and trade for Oswalt. Oswalt could veto a trade to the White Sox via his no-trade clause. The Minnesota Twins have also said they have interest in Oswalt. Two things stand in the way of Oswalt moving to Minnesota: 1. His no-trade clause 2. His salary. Oswalt can pick and choose where he wants to go. Also any team that trades for Oswalt will have to pay for salary until 2012. Even if the Astros pay a portion of Oswalt's salary, the Twins may not want to pay for the remaining costs.

Adam Dunn- Reports so far say don't be surprised if the Nationals don't trade Dunn and instead re-sign the popular first baseman. With young sluggers such as Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Willingham and Stephen Strasburg anchoring the pitching staff with Matt Capps as the closer, the Nationals are a team of the future and may need Dunn to anchor the lineup next season.

Kerry Wood- Yes, that Kerry Wood is a trade prospect. With teams such as the Giants and Phillies in need of bullpen help, Wood could be a nice acquisition at the right price. Wood has been a closer with Cleveland but would be just another reliever on another team. Wood's stats haven't been that bad this season. He has eight saves and only three blown saves with a 1.60 WHIP and a .263 BAA. Wood could be a nice addition to a bullpen if he isn't on the disable list.

Ted Lilly- With the Cubs not going anywhere and not looking to re-sign Lilly in the off-season, Ted Lilly is a valuable trade piece. The Dodgers, Yankees, and Reds might be looking to add Lilly to their rotation.

Yesterday, JFein talked about the bad reputation of Philadelphia sports fans and how it's an unfair because how the media portrays them. Well I've found video of Indians and Angels fans fighting in Anaheim yesterday.

Breaking News: Pittsburgh Pirates Give Up On Life

After trading away most of their team this season including Jack Wilson this mourning, the Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Freddy Sanchez to the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants had to give up Tim Alderson in the deal. Alderson was the number two ranked pitching prospect in the Giants organization and the 45th best prospect according to Baseball America.

Sanchez is batting .296 with an OPA .334. So he fits in perfectly with the Giants. He doesn't walk much. Perfect match. In all seriousness the Giants needed a 2nd baseman. They couldn't trot out everyday Juan Uribe, Kevin Fransden, and Matt Downs. They needed a top of the lineup hitter. Especially with Philadelphia coming to the phone booth for a four game weekend. The Giants offense still lacks the middle-of-the-order punch, but they have added two veteran bats at spots where production was lacking.

Giants Finally Acquire A Bat

Well Brian Sabean finally dit it. He finally acquired a bat. According to Ed Price of Fanhouse, the San Francisco Giants have traded for Cleveland Indians 1st baseman Ryan Garko. Garko should be used to the enviroment, because he attended college at Stanford.

Garko is hitting .285 with 11 homers and 39 RBI's. And since he is playing in Cleveland, those numbers are sort of impressive. I still think the Giants should have been aggressive towards a deal for Matt Holliday, but I will take Garko.

Oh yeah, Garko is a huge Jim Rome Show fan, so that makes me a fan of his.

Shaq to Cleveland

Jeez what took so long Danny Ferry? You should have traded for Shaq four months ago to help LeBron in the playoffs. Could you have imagined a LeBron/Shaq vs. Kobe in the finals. David Stern is pissed this mourning because this trade didn't happen sooner. Anyways the trade was finally made, and we are plenty of story lines heading into next season.

- We finally get to see Shaq face off against Dwight Howard and Stan Van Jeremy four times a year. Remember Shaq put on blast both Howard and Van Jeremy during last season.

- What type of impact will Shaq have on the team? Orlando will be the same. Boston will improve once they are healthy. Philadelphia should improve under new coach Eddie Jordan. Can Shaq be a force for Cleveland? And can he help them win the championship?

- Can Shaq stay healthy? Last season Shaq was healthy and played in a majority of the games for the first time in a long time.

- You have to love Shaq not hearing about the trade until someone asked him about it through Twitter. You have to love stories being broken through Twitter.

- The Cavs gave up nothing for Shaq. They gave up Ben Wallace, and his bad legs, and a bag of beans. They didn't give up Delonte West, Mo Williams or J.J. Hickson.

- Lastly, I can't wait for a dance-off between Shaq and LeBron.

Can Jay Cutler Make Up His Mind?

Jay Cutler is one strange cat. First the Denver Broncos try to trade him for Matt Cassel. They deny it, get caught, and Cutler starts pouting. He has sold his house in Denver and didn't even show up for the team's workouts. Now he telling Jay Glazer of Fox Sports that he didn't want to get traded.

"I was surprised they decided to trade me this soon," Cutler told Glazer in his first comments since the statement was released. "I didn't want to get traded. This wasn't me. (The Broncos) had been going back and forth saying things, wanting me to be their quarterback and then they didn't."

"I really didn't want this. I love Denver. I really like my teammates. I didn't want it to get this far."

Jay sure does have a strange way of showing love to Denver. He pouts for about a month straight, and then he doesn't show up for workouts.

Also if you love your teammates, show up to the off-season workouts. They are there working their butts off, and you should be there too.

And if you didn't want to get traded, you also have a weird way of showing it. From the early speculation Cutler wanted out of Denver. This was even before they tried to trade Cutler for Cassel. He was supposedly mad because the new regime didn't keep any of the holdovers. He especially mad when the Broncos didn't keep Jeremy Bates, who left for USC.

All I could think of, Jay must be worried about his public relations. He doesn't want the rest of the league to think that he could be a problem in the locker room. Too late, Jay. Other teams in the league know about your attitude, and while an owner, GM, and coach might want you, your new teammates can see through you.

Good luck Jay with the rest of your career.

BREAKING: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs

According to NFL.com Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs have traded for New England quarterback Matt Cassel. Former Patriots employee now Chiefs GM Scott Pioli orchestrated the trade for both Cassel and Mike Vrabel for a 2ND round draft pick.

Cassel who started 15 games for the Patriots after Tom Brady went down with an knee injury. Cassel was placed with the franchise tag by the Patriots during the off season, will likely now sign a new deal with the Chiefs.

I like this move for the Chiefs. I didn't see Brodie Croyle or Tyler Thingpen as future NFL starters. Cassel is still unproven and was benefited with a great supporting cast in New England. At least with the Chiefs though he will probably have tight end Tony Gonzalez, receiver Dwayne Bowe, and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. So he will be provided with some weapons with the Chiefs.
