The Qatar World Cup Will Be Like Something Out Of A Movie

I remember as a kid watching that terrible Sylvester Stallone movie "Judge Dredd" and being impressed at what type of gadgets we could have in the future. "You mean we could have flying motorcycles?" "There will be robots that will dispense Coors Light and a Cup of Noodles?" Sadly there aren't any flying motorcycles or robots that dispense both Coors Light and a Cup of Noodles, but that doesn't mean technology hasn't evolved or couldn't evolve. I bring this all up because Qatar has some wild ideas about improving technology when they host the 2022 World Cup.

Qatar was a controversial choice to host the World Cup back last December. One of the main concerns about Qatar was the fact it will be extremely hot in that country when the World Cup will be played. Don't worry though Qatar might have a solution to that problem. An "Artificial Cooling Cloud"!

Bods from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department at Qatar University have unveiled their design for an ‘artificial cloud’ that could be used to temper the desert country’s blistering heat during the 2022 World Cup.

According to the spiel, the cloud is positioned by remote control, made of 100% light carbonic materials, filled with helium, fuelled by four solar-powered engines (I imagine there’s a lot of that knocking about in Qatar) and it’s primary function will be to hover above the various stadiums in order to ‘filter both direct and indirect UV rays, as well as controlling temperatures at pitch level’ – all at a cost of around $500,000.

That's one expensive air conditioner.

Pick whatever movie about the future as you want, but that picture definitely looks like something out of 'Judge Dredd' or 'Blade Runner'. And could you imagine sitting in that stadium and seeing something hover over head and realize it's a flying air conditioner? Good look with these grand ideas Qatar.
