Happy Holidays

The Colonel is gone for the week and I'll be on Christmas vacation in a couple of hours. I might have a post up later in the week and I'll definitely have the next Must List up by next Monday. I just wanted to thank all of you for your continued support of KSJ and wish all of you a happy and joyful Christmas. And be thankful you don't have an asshole in a bathrobe emptying his sewage tank into a storm drain.

Spring Is Coming

Yes I know the Northeast was pounded with snow this weekend, but I'm here to tell you that spring is around the corner with summer right behind it. This week pitchers and catchers begin reporting to their respective teams with full squads the couple of days later. On February 23rd I'll be listening to Jon Miller and Duane Kuiper calling the Giants first spring training game. There's hope around the corner.

This time of the year is always the pits sports related and you never realize it until the week after the super bowl. You wake up on Sunday morning yearning to take it easy, prepare for the upcoming work week, and then there's nothing on but basketball and hockey. I love those two sports but let's be honest, those sports this time of the year are boring. Both the NBA and NHL are usually at the mid point of their seasons and we're still a month away from the NCAA Tournament.

Baseball players though returning to spring training though gives us hope for the future. Pretty soon the NCAA Tournament will be played. Baseball will be back. The NHL and NBA will have their playoffs. And then we'll have another sports drought until the two footballs return.

Right now though all we have is the hope spring is returning and that our baseball teams will be good. Keep up the hope and make it through these next couple of weeks because the NCAA tournament is right around the corner.

Best of New Yorker Short Stories

I'm a reader of short stories and thankfully in the Internet days there are plenty of websites like Joyland, Guernica, and most important The New Yorker. Unlike the other websites the New Yorker doesn't give away all of their short stories for free but still there's plenty that are free and great to read.

(The title is a little misleading. It should actually read, "Best of New Yorker Short Stories That Are Free on Their Website". Whatever though. So you won't be able to read the great Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery". Go find it in the bookstore and read it there. There are still some great short stories that have been written in the New Yorker recently that are completely free to read.*)

Without further ado, here are some of the best New Yorker short stories. (Note: If you click on the author's name in the story, it will link to other articles/short stories they have written for the New Yorker. Stories that don't have a lock on them are the free one's.)

Symbols & Signs by Vladimir Nabokov: Along with Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", "Symbols & Signs" is one of the classic short stories the New Yorker has published. This story is about a Russian couple buying a gift on Christmas for their insane son who is locked up in a mental institution.

I.D. by Joyce Carol Oates: Joyce Carol Oates is one of the most productive writers you'll ever see. Every year she is churning out novels, short stories, and book reviews. Her best shorty story in my opinion that appeared in the New Yorker is "I.D" the story of a kid who is pulled out of his Atlantic City classroom to talk to the police.

Deep-Holes by Alice Munro: Munro like Carol Oates, churns out short story after short story. Several of them have appeared in the New Yorker over the years and my personal favorite was "Deep-Holes". This story is about a young boy who falls into a hole during a picnic with his family. As he grows up he becomes sorta a weirdo who cuts off connections from his family but his mother wants to reconnect with him.

The Pura Principle by Junot Diaz: Diaz recently released a book of short connected stories. One of those stories is "The Pura Principle". Diaz's alter ego, Yunior, describes his relationship with an older teacher through the years.

Means of Suppressing Demonstrations by Shani Boianjiu: With all the Gaza Strip news lately you should read this story about Palestinians demonstrating by a Israeli checkpoint.

Andrew Bynum's Hair Wins the Universe

What else can I say about this hair? It wins the universe and that's all what needs to be said.

For Whom The Bell Tolls

No sports on yesterday and today. There's enough coverage of this Penn State report that might two cents aren't worth it. So I'm going to instead review Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls for the hell of it.

A recurring theme in Hemingway's books and short stories is death and tragedy. Whether it's A Farewell To Arms, For Whom The Bell Tolls, or Hemingway's short story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber death and tragedy are the main themes. Hemingway was consumed with a tragic ending and death to the point you wonder if he was a part of a Shakespeare fan club.

For Whom The Bell Tolls tells the story of Robert Jordan who is with the International Brigades that are fighting the fascists forces during the Spanish Civil War. Jordan is sent behind enemy lines to blow up a bridge with the help of antifascists guerrillas. While with the guerrillas forces Jordan falls in love with Maria and describes the horrors of civil war and the fear of the fascists airplanes.

Jordan eventually blows the bridge but he is maimed when his horse is shot out from underneath him from a tank. Knowing he would only slow down the guerrillas Jordan says goodbye to Maria and prepares an ambush on the fascists. The book ends with Jordan preparing to attack.

The language in this book caused me to stop reading it a couple of times. What I mean is that not only does Hemingway use Shakespeare themes, but also Shakespeare language to translate the Spanish in the book. There are a lot of sentences in the book that have "Thy" or "Thou" along with sentences in Spanish. This hosh-posh of language can make For Whom The Bell Tolls a hard read.

If you can get past the hard language I would recommend reading this book. Hemingway's portrayal of civil war and the fear of death to soldiers is beautiful. Hemingway's portrait of the hilly landscape and the harsh conditions the guerrillas lived in is wonderful.

Bo Knows

Today at SB Nation both Jon Bois and Bomani Jones celebrated the fascinating heart-stomping career's of Bo Jackson. I suggest to everyone to go read this piece and celebrate the greatness that was Bo Jackson.

I found it interesting that both Bois and Jones remembered Bo more as a baseball player than a football player. I'll always recognize Bo for his football days, but that's probably because he played football for the Raiders which is basically like Bo was in my backyard.

The most interesting piece and as Bomani Jones stated, Bo's greatest legacy was that he just simply walked away from sports and never looked back.

"Post-career Bo is just as impressive to me as the athletic superhero. The reason? He seems perfectly fine with not being the athletic superhero. We just got an all-too-real reminder of how difficult it can be for former football players to transition into being regular people. For athletes, in general, this is very hard to do. I would imagine it would be brutal for someone who was as big a star as Bo Jackson. After being, essentially, a journeyman with an artificial hip for years in baseball, he moved into being a regular dude in Alabama

But every time you'd see an interview with him after his career, he sounded like he couldn't be more comfortable. Imagine being so confident in yourself, as a man, that you could have so much ripped from you in a single moment, yet grow and become someone who seems just as happy without it. That is Bo's most underrated feat: he moved on."

That is Bo's greatest legacy. He simply moved on. He didn't stick around baseball looking for another paycheck like Miguel Tejada or Vlad Guerrero. He didn't stick around for that one last awkward year to break a record no one was ever going to accept like Barry Bonds. (I loved Barry as much as anyone, but his last year in San Francisco in retrospect was about as awkward as it gets.) That's something to be admired about Bo and respected.

Today Bo is riding his bike for tornado victims in Alabama and occasionally showing up on the talk show circuit. He'll always be remembered though as one of the greatest athletes ever.

Quick Rant: Watching In Silence

I'm the first one to say that I have weird quirks when I'm watching sports. I can listen to a game on the radio while also having it on TV. That's because I like listening to the radio announcers of my teams, all of whom are great. I can also watch a game in complete silence. Seriously. I'll watch the game with no sound. I do this because I'd either like to observe everything that is happening and I find that watching a game in silence helps me do this. Or I watch a game in complete silence because I cannot stand whoever is announcing the game.

Case in point, Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. Now I'm not the first one to complain about these two. Hell even Joe Posnanski has complained about McCarver before. Instead of complaining about Buck and McCarver, and they certainly have their faults, I've watched virtually this entire World Series in silence or I've listen to ESPN Radio call the game.

For whatever reason I can do this. I can listen to a game in silence and be bothered by it. I understand though why most people can't do this. TV spectators need to hear the announcers no matter how bad they are. They need to hear the crowd, the possible profanity that the TV audience can hear, and the heartbreak and triumph. People just need to hear something. I'd rather hear nothing than listening to bad announcers.

Happy Memorial Day

I would like to take this time to remember the soldiers that have paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep this country safe. They're the real hero's in this world and I cannot help but to think of my grandfather who fought in WWII on this day.

- Two bizarre finishes in the world of motor sports yesterday. First JR Hildebrand had a chance to win the Indianapolis 500 on his first try, but crashed on the final turn of the final lap and finished 2nd because of it. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a chance to win his first race in a very long time, but ran out of gas right before the victory lane.

The Dream is Alive!

I talked about Detroit's desire to build a RoboCop statue last week. Detroit mayor and NBA Hall of Famer Dave Bing politely declined to build a statue of RoboCop to for the city of Detroit. Well the dream is alive, the RoboCop statue will be built!

"Good news, sci-fi fans: RoboCop is headed to Detroit.

Just six days after raising donations on the Internet, a group of local artists and fans of the 1987 cult classic exceeded the fund-raising goal of $50,000 this morning to build a larger-than-life sculpture of the crime-fighting cyborg."

Great work by the citizens of Detroit (including you RJBO, we all know you donated for the cause) proving once again if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. 

Now the question is, where will the statue be placed? There's a couple of ideas.

"Fund-raising began last week after Detroit Mayor Dave Bing politely rejected a suggestion on Twitter that RoboCop would improve the city's image. Although the Tweet was a joke from a New England computer technician, fans of RoboCop swarmed cyberspace to call for a statue.

Once the price tag is determined, a team of skilled sculptures, including a team that worked with Bjork's husband, Matthew Barney, will build the sculpture from any number of materials. The group is working with the Mayor's Office to consider public spots, such as areas near Comerica Park or a downtown park.

If that doesn't work out, the statue may end up at Imagination Station, an outdoor art project cofounded by Paffendorf near the abandoned Michigan Central Station just off Michigan Avenue." 

Could you imagine the RoboCop statue next to the Ernie Harwell statue at Comerica Park? You walk through the gates and there it is standing right next to the great Ernie Harwell. Hell, I might even buy tickets to this years Tigers-Giants series just for I can get a picture of that statue. The tourist possibility for Detroit is endless now.

I would also make the statue animated for it can stop Jim Leyland from smoking in public. "Your smoke, Leyland."

What Would Be Your Final Words?

What would be your final words before you died? Seems like a simple question until you start thinking about it. What would be my final words before I died? Would you ask God for forgiveness? Would you say I love you to your family? Would you say "Boomer Sooner!"?

That's what happened with Jeffrey Landrigan, but with a twist. Landrigan was on death row and was about to be executed. Mr. Landrigan had already been in jail for second-degree murder in Oklahoma, when he escaped. Landrigan turned up in Arizona, strangled a man in a robbery, arrested, and given the death penalty. His execution was held up in courts, until the supreme court by a 5-4 decision, vacated the other decisions. Mr. Landrigan had his final meal and then was asked what his final words were going to be. Here's what he said, via CNN.

"I'd like to say 'thank you' to my family for being here and all of my friends," were Landrigan's final words, according to Marson. He concluded with "Boomer Sooner," a cheer often used by University of Oklahoma fans.

Now that is something to be proud of if your a Oklahoma fan. A death row inmate being executed for murder shouts out "Boomer Sooner!" as his final words. Funny thing is, that's not the first time someone has been executed and his final words had to do with his favorite sports team.

Posting and the Schedule

It's hard to believe, but July is almost over and Summer is already half over. NFL teams are already reporting to training camp and little more than a month from now college football will start their season. Posting about just baseball every day for the past month has become redundant. I can only regurgitate Roy Oswalt news for so long. So in the upcoming days and month I'll begin posting college football and NFL previews.

Last year JFein and myself previewed every NFL team before the season. That became a chore and JFein and myself started to resent having to hold up to this commitment. We just wanted it to end by the end of the previews.  This year I'll be taking the previews into a different direction. Instead of previewing each team, I'll preview the stories, players, and interesting topics of the NFL. For college football I'll preview the conferences, players, story-lines, and coaches for the upcoming season. Should be a fun month.

This Week- I'll continue to post Baseball Updates centered around the upcoming trade deadline. I'll also begin previewing the upcoming college football season. College football begins their season before the NFL, so I'll begin previewing college football before the NFL.

Upcoming Weeks- I'll begin previewing the NFL and keeping everyone updated on the MLB season. We'll be in the pennant races by then and the baseball season will hopefully be more exciting.

I'm Back!

Well after a week and a half of using an on-screen keyboard, I've finally got a working computer. Kind of.

Let's backtrack for a second. My main computer I use is a Toshiba laptop. My parents gave me that computer for my birthday last February. I've never had any problems with that computer and thought very highly of the Toshiba brand. That was until January 1, 2010.

I was commenting over at California Golden Blogs during the Rose Bowl. Then all of a sudden my keyboard went hay wire. And ever since my life has been a living hell with computers and Internet connections.

That Saturday I took my laptop over to the Geek Squad over at Best Buy. They new exactly was was wrong but said I had to call Toshiba to get a new keyboard. Why they couldn't talk to the Toshiba plant is beyond me, but I went back home and called Toshiba. Only one problem though, it was the weekend so nobody is working.

Now at this same time I could still use the Internet on my original computer. I just couldn't use the keyboard. I could though use an on-screen keyboard. So I had to use my mouse to use the on-screen keyboard. The problem with using a keyboard like that though is that it takes forever to type something. So I was barely existent on my own live blog and open threads.

By the following Monday I called Toshiba and ordered the part. The computer was on warranty, so it wouldn't cost me anything. But they said it would take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to ship to me. Fine, I still had the ability to use my original computer, but I was in need of a backup.

My parents have an i Mac that a friend gave to them three years ago that they have never used. So last Friday I went to my parents house and picked up that computer. I used the Toshiba and the on-screen keyboard for the rest of the weekend.

On Monday was when my hell begun. I called Comcast, my cable and Internet provider, to hook up the Internet for the i Mac. Only one problem though, the Internet was hooked up to the computer but there was no web browser. They told me I had to call the Apple people to fix that problem. By this point I was so frustrated, that I put this off until today.

So today I called the Apple people and told them about the problem with the web browser. Since this computer is over 3 years old, but has barely been used, I had to update everything. This took basically the entire day to update everything.

And now here I am. I do sincerely apologize for not posting more material, but computer problems can be a real bitch sometimes. I'll be tomorrow with The Links and reaction to the Lane Kiffin hiring at USC.
