Pass Interference on Number 12

Yeah, yeah I know Lebron scored 61 last night against a good defensive team. That didn't impress me though. Lebron could almost score 61 every night if he really wanted to. What impressed me last night was this game winner by Wesley Johnson.



If the NBA was the NFL, LeMarcus Aldridge would have been called for pass interference. Aldridge was all over Johnson on that play and remarkably, Wes still caught the pass in mid air and laid in the ball for the game-winner. The Lakers have had a terrible season but that must have been nice to beat a good team like Portland on a lay-up.

Gerald Henderson Dunks On Dwight Howard, Lakers Teammate Celebrates

Last night the Los Angeles Lakers needed a 4th quarter rally to beat the Charlotte Bobcats. Yes seriously. That's not what I want to talk about though. I want to talk about Gerald Henderson dunking on Dwight Howard and the fact someone on the Lakers bench jumped up to celebrate the dunk. Watch:



What's funny about that Lakers player jumping up to celebrate his teammate getting dunked on was that someone else grabbed him and sat him down. Now there are multiple reasons why a teammate would be celebrating the fact that Dwight got dunked on. Let's run them down:

- Didn't like Howard's impersonation of him.
- Kobe told him to celebrate Howard's failings
- Celebrating for one of Howard's baby mamma's
- He just got finished reading one of Phil Jackson's "Zen" books and was celebrating the fact he understood it
- Didn't like Howard's Superman impersonation
- Thinks Howard is a dick and believes that anything bad that happens to him should be celebrated.

Whatever the reasons were for that Lakers teammate celebration, I applaud him for applauding that awesome dunk.

Yep, The Lakers Are Still The Lakers

If I needed another reason to hate the Lakers, this is it.

Lakers Get: Dwight Howard, Chris Duhon, Earl Clark
76ers Get: Andrew Bynum, Jason Richardson
Nuggets Get: Andre Iguodala
Magic Get: Crap

Let's break this down a litter farther.

Magic: Amazing to me the Magic held out as long as they did trading Howard and they still got shit back for him. Not even the "protected" draft picks are that great because they're "protected" meaning if the either the Lakers or Philly become bad enough that they fall into the lottery, they keep the picks and the Magic get nothing. The Magic also wanted to get rid of their salary cap space clogging contracts and didn't even get rid of the worst one, Hedo. Add to the fact they didn't get Bynum and the Magic might have pulled off the worst trade in all of sports history.

Nuggets: The Nuggets sneaked into this trade and grabbed Iguodala creating what could be one of the funnier teams to watch next season. Lawson, Faried, Javale, Andre Miller, Gallinari, and Iguodala is going to be great fun to watch. Too bad the Nuggets will still not be able to get out of the first round..........

76ers: There are pros and cons to this trade

Con- Bynum and Doug Collins smells like trouble. Collins, a notorious asshole, teaming up with someone who trolls the shit out of his own coaches has disaster written all over it. I can only imagine Bynum doing this leading Collins to do this. I might buy League Pass just to witness this moment. You know it's going to happen.

Pro- Philly has a history of adopting troublemakers. Broad Street Bullies, Iverson, Lenny Dykstra, etc. Bynum couldn't pick a better city to play for.

Con- Philly fans turn on Bynum the first time he gets hurt or they have enough of his act. Then this will end badly no matter what. (And once Philly fan turns, it's over. See: TO, JD Drew, Lindross)

Pro- Bynum instantly makes this team interesting to watch. Philly made the playoffs last year but they weren't always the funniest or most interesting team to watch. Bynum at least makes them interesting.

Lakers: Like the Sixers there are pros and cons to this deal.

Pro- Lakers receive one of the 5 best players in the league and the best center of the league when there aren't a lot of centers in the NBA at the moment. Lakers also get Howard in his prime, will keep him during his prime, and then can get rid of him when he's no longer useful and trade for Anthony Davis (I'll guarantee Davis somehow ends up with the Lakers in 8 years). I hate the Lakers.

Con- Howard is coming off back surgery. He's a professional athlete and will probably recover from this and not have to worry about it again. (Just my luck Howard will never have a back problem again.) Still though it's back surgery. Bad backs usually don't go away.

Pro- Somehow the Lakers kept Pau Gasol. So not only do the Lakers have someone who can play 5 feet in front of the basket, but they also kept one of the few players who legitimately can play away from the basket because he has low post moves. I hate the Lakers.

Con- Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant are the combined age of my father.

Pro- Nash pick-and-rolling with Howard and Gasol.

Con- Bryant still jacking up 25 shots a night and forgetting about Howard and Gasol. (What am I saying? This is actually a pro!)

It's amazing but the Lakers are still the Lakers. If there's a player they really want, they'll get him somehow unless Stern vetoes the trade. This is a big reason why I've always had a love/hate relationship with the NBA. Love the athleticism and beauty of the NBA, hate the fact there are only a couple of teams each year that are contenders. The Lakers are a contender with this move.

2010 NBA Finals, Celtics at Lakers Game 7: Open Thread

The NBA Finals haven't seen a game 7 since the 2005 season. The NBA also hasn't seen a compelling NBA Finals go seven games since the 1988 Finals. We finally have a compelling NBA Finals series go seven games. Two main themes from the game, Legacy and how will the Celitcs respond to the Kendrick Perkins injury.

Legacy is on the line between Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett/Paul Pierce/Ray Allen. Kobe can win his 5th championship and second without Shaq cementing his place along with the game's greats. Garnett/Pierce/Allen can win their second championship and cement their place in the Hall of Fame.

The other main theme will be how the Celtics play without Kendrick Perkins. Glen Big Baby Davis will start in his place, bringing more scoring and energy, but he doesn't have the size to compete with Bynum and Odom. The Celtics have had an uphill climb throughout the year and this will be their biggest challenge.

My pick, the Lakers. I've never liked teams losing game six and coming back to win game seven. There is something about winning game six and closing the series out then. Teams that lose game six seem like they never recovered. I'm going with the Lakers tonight. I hope I'm wrong.

Inside the Paint: We're Headed for Game 7

This game was over from the moment Kendrick Perkins went down with a knee injury at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter. Without Perkins the Celtics were out-rebounded 52-39. The Celtics didn't have the size in the middle to contend with the Lakers for rebounds and it was all over. Perkins said he is going to try and play on Thursday but he sprained both his MCL and ACL ligaments.



With or without Perkins, game 7 should be epic on Thursday. This is the first Finals series since 2005 that has gone the distance, but these two teams are better than San Antonio and Detroit. Should be fun. I'll see if I'm able to do a live blog for the game, it all depends on work.

Self-Serving/NBA Finals, Game 6 Open Thread

The Celtics look to finish off the Lakers tonight and raise banner 18 to the rafters. The Celtics have to finish out tonight. They cannot let the Lakers tie the series and force a Game 7. The refs tonight favor the Celtics where the potential referee's for Game 7 favor the Lakers. For the Lakers, they cannot let the Celtics push them around like they have in Game 4 and 5. Gasol is going to have to have a big game to relieve the pressure from Kobe. Ron Artest has to be his old defensive stopper. Lamar Odom is going to have to give more off the bench for the Lakers. Gut feeling, the Celtics close out tonight. With Andrew Bynum hurt, the Celtics have taken complete advantage of the Lakers front court. I don't see where this will change tonight.

Tonight the Orioles and Giants also resume their series. So with Kris and myself having an vested interest in both teams, we will also be watching that game. Tonight also marks the return of the Phillies-Yankees series. The Phillies will be traveling to New York to play the team that beat them in last year's World Series. Tonight's pitching matchup: Halladay vs. Sabathia. Should be a great night of sports.

Inside the Paint: Celtics On Verge Of Banner 18

The Celtics were suppose to be too old and slow. No way they could beat the Lakers in a seven game series. Now the Celtics are one win away from banner 18. The Boston Celtics beat the Los Angeles Lakers last night in the Garden 92-86 to take a 3-2 lead in the series that is shifting back to Los Angeles. Quite frankly, the Lakers were punched in the mouth last night by the Celtics and they didn't know how to respond.



Kobe Bryant had a great game, 38 points 13-37 from the field, but the rest of the Lakers decided not to show up. Pau Gasol was the only other Laker who scored in double figures and that didn't happen until late in the fourth quarter. Gasol last night was flat out abused by Keven Garnett. Reminiscent of the 08 Finals when everyone said Gasol was too soft. Since Andrew Bynum hurt his knee in Game 4, Gasol has been exposed by the Celtic big men. Bynum gave the Lakers another rebounder who is as physical as the Celtics. Bynum also provided a distraction for the Celtics which gave Gasol leeway to work the post. With Bynum playing but struggling, the Celtics have focused all their attention on Gasol who is the Lakers only low post threat.



Paul Pierce motivated his team with a 27 point output on 21 shots with no turnovers. Meanwhile the Lakers have withered under the intense pressure of Kobe. Here's what Kobe had to say after the game, “We’ve regressed since Game 1. Our defense belongs on milk cartons in the last two games.” Nothing like your leader throwing the entire team under the buss.



Now the series shifts back to Los Angeles with the Lakers on the verge of collapse and the Celtics on the verge of glory. Will the other Lakers despite Kobe show up? Will the Celtics age show up in Game 6? Will Ray Allen snap out of this funk he's been in since Game 2? Game 6 will definitely be fascinating to watch.

2010 NBA Finals, Game 5: Lakers at Celtics, Open Thread

This series has been back-and-forth so much, I have no clue who is going to win. One game the Lakers look great. One game the Celtics look great. I hate using cliches like "This is a must win for (whatever team" but this is a must win for either the Celtics or Lakers. With the series tied and going back to Los Angeles for Game 6 and 7 neither team wants to go back to the Staples Center on the verge of elimination.

The Celtics are hoping the Big 3 have a complete game together. All three players have been inconsistent throughout the series. The Lakers are hoping for better defense and rebounding in Game 5. Also the Lakers have to get something out of their bench. Lamar Odom has pulled one of his usual disappearing acts so far in the series. The Lakers need more out of him since Andrew Bynum will be hobbling around on a bum knee.

Once again watch out for the refs. I thought the refs did a good job in Game 4, but you never with these guys. As always leave comments and don't be a troll.

Celtics vs. Lakers 2010 NBA Finals, Game 4 Open Thread

Tonight the Celtics look to even up the series with the Lakers. The Celtics still have two home games in the series to take advantage of. A win tonight for the Celtics and this series will most likely go seven. And win for the Lakers and this series might not even have to go back to Los Angeles.

The referees for Game 4 is once again the story before the game. How the NBA decides who refs each Finals game is utterly ridiculous. The NBA grades the refs throughout the season and the best 12 refs are chosen for the Finals. Only one problem though, refs like Bennett Salvatore and Joey Crawford are two of refs in the NBA. That doesn't say much about the referees in the NBA if Salvatore and Crawford are considered two of the best 12 refs in the league.

Stephen Strasburg/NBA Finals Game 3 Open Thread

In case you didn't hear, Stephen Strasburg is making his debut tonight for the Washington Nationals. I have to admit, I feel sorry for Strasburg. The hype around him has been insane. I will root for him because he seems like a nice kid who is facing impossible expectations. My prediction for Strasburg: 6 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB, 5 strikeouts. He is facing the Pirates though at home, so he could throw a no-hitter.

Also feel free to use this thread to discuss the NBA Finals tonight. Keep an eye out on the officiating for the game. Bennett Salvatore, Bill Kennedy, and Danny Crawford are the officials. Salvatore has a bad history of reffing NBA Finals games (See: Miami vs. Dallas 2006) and Bill Kennedy has proven to be anti-Celtic. I wouldn't be surprised if the officiating will be talked about once again after this game.

Also watch for how the Lakers guard both Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen. Will Allen be able to shoot 3's like he did in Game 2? Will Rondo dominate late in Game 3 like he did in Game 2? Is Garnett still breathing? What type of voodoo magic Phil Jackson will use?

Breen getting his stats on the 2-3-2 format from the CBS research staff. (RJBO) I guess so. I do agree though, the finals should go back to the 2-2-1-1-1 format. With chartered planes, the travel isn't what it used to be.

Rondo makes a jumper right at the buzzer. The shot should count. Los Angeles 50 Boston 41 end of the 1st half. Too many fouls in the 1st quarter ruined the first part of the game. Then the Lakers fastbreak just out-ran the Celtics old legs. This could become a bloodbath in the second half.

We Finally Have a Series

Despite 38 points, 15-for-22, 6-for-9 from behind the arc, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds from Kobe Bryant, the Lakers still lost game 4 and are now headed back to Los Angeles tied in the series with the Phoenix Suns. The biggest difference in the game was the 54 points the Suns bench scored, including Goran Dragic's sick layup. That wasn't the only story from the game. The supposedly smaller Suns out-rebounded the Lakers 51-36, including 18-13 on the offensive glass. The Lakers must improve their defense if they want to go back to Phoenix with the series lead.
