A Collection Of Nats Spelling Screw Ups

Let me first say that I work for a small local newspaper as a copy editor. I basically read other people's work and check to see if their spelling and grammar is correct. Let's just say the dictionary and thesaurus are my best friends.  I bring this all up because I hope the Washington Nationals hire me as their copy editor for I can correct their spelling mistakes. And trust me they need help in the copy editing department. There's a whole collection of Nationals spelling screw ups.

This happened a few years ago, but the Nationals actually wore jersey's with "Natinals" written across their chest.
The Nationals started this year off by misspelling John Lannan's name. (DC Sports Blog)
The Nationals honored the hero's of 9/11 only one problem with this though. They spell honoring wrong on the plaque. (DC Sports Blog)
MASN the TV partner of the Nationals also caught the bad spelling bug. How do you not spell players names correctly? (DC Sports Blog)
The Nats copy editing woes continued to their souvenir giveaways. According to the Nats there's two March 30th's. (DC Sports Blog)

Do the right thing Nationals and hire me as your copy editor. You definitely need the help in that department.

Jake Locker to Play Baseball?

Well not exactly. University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker, has meet with the Anaheim Angels to talk about his future in baseball.

The Angels picked Locker in the tenth round of the MLB draft a couple of weeks ago. Locker and his father Scott meet with the Angels to see what type of direction the Angels want to take him. If the Angels sign him, they hold his rights for six years. So even if he stays with the Washington football team, the Angels still hold his rights and he can show up anytime to play for them.

"It will be our first chance to see what direction thisis going," Scott Locker said on Tuesday morning before heading to Seattle for the meeting. Locker is acting as his son's adviser as Jake Locker cannothire an agent without losing his football eligibility.
One thing that has remained clear is, Jake Locker is committed to football and the Washington Huskies.

"His main goal in life is to be a next-level football guy," Scott Locker said. "He wants to play on Sundays, and that's the goal."

Locker is one of the best two sport prospects in a long time. Locker was highly recruited bycollege football teams coming out of high school and has the potential to be an NFL quarterback. He is also a top flight baseball prospect. He was drafted as a centerfielder and his baseball prowess has been called "hall of fame, type stuff."

Locker though may want to sign with the Angels to have another career to fall back on. Washington is rebuilding their football program which could hinder Locker's chances of being drafted in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. At least by signing with the Angels there is a back up plan for his future.

However, right now Jake Locker will be the starting quarterback of the Washington Huskies next fall.

Football is still his priority, but Jake Locker to meet with Angels (Seattle Times)

A Major League Player Can't Quit Smoking

Washington Post had a article on Washington Nationals pitcher Scott Olson. It seemed harmless, they were doing a profile on one of their players. Until you start reading the article and Olson talks about his habit of smoking cigarettes.

His vice, for this particular moment, lent only one benefit: Just weeks into his first spring training with the Washington Nationals, Olsen already had discovered his own private smoking nook, tucked just outside the right field corner at Space Coast Stadium. His teammates, less than an hour from their 1 p.m. exhibition game on Tuesday, clustered in the clubhouse. But Olsen sat outside in an unattended golf cart, legs up on the glass windshield, puffing away and telling the story of old bad habits.
A major league baseball player is like a kid in high school looking for the perfect smoking spot. At my high school kids would either go into the bathroom or walk across the street off of school property to light up. Or when we would go to lunch, they would light up then. But a major leagueer has to sneak away for a smoke break?

Olson's pension for chain smoking once got him in trouble with the umpires.

"But the situation was, [umpire] Joe West was behind the plate, and he's kind of a stickler for certain things and likes rules. We get eight warmup pitches per inning, so I threw five, and he said, 'One more.' So I threw more, and he didn't like that and I said something to him, he said something to me, and as I get off the field, Girardi walks over.

"He didn't even yell. He looked at me, crossed his arms, and asked, 'What happened?' I said, 'That guy over there, he didn't give me my eight pitches, and I'm [freaking] pissed.' I understand he's the umpire, don't piss him off, blah blah blah, but I'm like, I get eight pitches whether I'm a rookie or a 20-year guy. It's a rule. And I told him that. He said, 'Okay, just don't show up the umpire.' It's not a big deal. People see it on TV, they see Girardi grabbing my jersey, and they think, '[Expletive], he [messed] up again. Yeah, but not like you think I [messed] up."
Dude didn't even take all of his warmup pitches just for he could light up between innings. I love his excuse for when he will quite.

He tried to quit on his 25th birthday, in January, but that didn't work. Now he's thinking he'll give up the habit only when his girlfriend gets pregnant.

"I just have to get motivated," Olsen said.
You have to love a professional athlete who smokes. These are the people who are suppose to keep their bodies in perfect shape. Not Olson, he likes to pollute his lungs with smoke.

Hell if the President of the United States can smoke, why can't Olson? I guess it's better than planting your face in a bong, like Michael Phelps.

The Mourning After: Final Weekend of College Football

Barring any sort of computer breakdown, Oklahoma and Florida will meet in the national championship game.

Everyone and their mother will pick Florida over Oklahoma and with good reason. Their win was more impressive.

The Legend Grows: With Alabama taking a four point lead over Florida and controlling most of the clock in the 3Rd quarter. You would think Florida would counter that with quick touchdowns wouldn't you. Wrong. Florida controlled the clock and ate up 5 minutes and scored the game winning touchdown. They added another score to put the game out of Alabama's reach. The Crimson Tide have nothing to hang their heads on. They improved vastly this year and only have room to improve. And with Nick Saban as their coach and lead recruiter, I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the SEC championship game next year.

Will They Get Exposed: Whitlock had a great column today talking about how Missouri's spread offense got exposed by defenses that can get pressure and make open field tackles. He also talked about how Oklahoma could get exposed by Florida. Sam Bradford and the rest of the Big 12 quarterbacks have had great years because of the week defenses in the conference. But if they face a tough defense that can get pressure Bradford might get exposed. He doesn't have the arm strength or accuracy to deal with the pressure. This should be an intriguing matchup.

Their Is Only Room For Improvement: While UCLA lost again to USC, their is only room to improve for this team. A young offensive line and injuries hurt this team this season. If Rick Neuheisel and Norm Chow can find a great quarterback look out, the monopoly in LA could end. While the Rose Bowl will get a great matchup between USC and Penn St.

If They Provide It, Then Don't Come: Virginia Tech and Boston College played in the ACC championship yesterday in an half-full Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The ACC championship has been an utter disappointment since its foundation. It doesn't help though that neither Florida St. or Miami haven't played in it. But Florida is just not ACC territory. North Carolina is ACC territory, and hopefully for the ACC when their championship moves to Charlotte in 2010, the stadium will be full.

East Carolina Is Still Relevant: After beating West Virginia and Viriginia Tech in the opening weeks, East Carolina looked like a team heading for a BCS berth. But after a loss to N.C. State the bottom fell out. They eventually recovered and won the Conference USA east division tittle. Yesterday they forced Tulsa into seven turnovers and won the Conference outright.

Player of the Week: While Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford both had great games, Cal running back Jahvid Best had the best day. He ran for 317 yards on 17 caries and four touchdowns, beating a horrible Washington team. While I know the SEC likes to proclaim that they have the fastest players in college, Jahvid Best might be the fastest player in college football.

Going Out In Style: Last week Phil Fulmer lead Tennessee to a win in his last game. So this week it was up to Tyrone Willingham. And good ole Ty definitely went out in style. He watched his team lose 48-7 and give up 300 yards to Best. He won't be missed in Washington.

Heisman Watch:
1. Tim Tebow, Florida
2. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma
3. Colt McCoy, Texas
4. Graham Harrell, Texas Tech
5. Javon Ringer, Michigan St.

Bow Projections:
National Championship Game: Florida vs. Oklahoma
Rose Bowl: USC vs. Penn St.
Orange Bowl: Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech
Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. Texas
Fiesta Bowl: Ohio St. vs. Utah

The bowl picks come out today and we will report on it then.

Washingotn Still Searching for the Right Man

Well I guess Mike Leach and Pat Hill didn't like the Evergreen State. Because both men pulled their name from consideration today for the Washington job.

- Pat Hill was supposedly hot for the Huskies job, but wanted to know by Wednesday if the job was his. Apparently Washington officials were waiting for Mike Leach.

- Mike Leach, apparently didn't want to go for a second interview, and couldn't wait no longer.

All these reports are not looking good for Washington. They suggest an unstable environment that a current head coach wouldn't want to be at right now. But lets look at the other facts keeping Washington from finding a proven head coach.

- Their facilities are a mess right now. Huskies stadium is one of the worst stadiums in the country and it doesn't look like it will be repaired anytime soon.

- Their alumni and boosters are hard to deal with. Tyrone Willingham is a laid back guy, who could handle the Norte Dame alumni and boosters. But in Washington they expect to much of you. They want the school to be as good as it was in the early 90's under Don James. But with the current facilities hardly any recruits want to play up their.

There is a lot of speculation that Washington will stick to the West Coast in their job search. But they must understand that a proven current head coach has no ambitions to coach there right now. They have to start looking at some of the best assistants in the country.
