U.S. Open Update: Tigers Fades, Duval Shines

Well after the rain destroyed the course and the first round yesterday, the participants in the US Open were able to finish their first rounds today. And so far we have seen some surprising action.

Tiger Woods who played six holes yesterday, finished his first round today and he imploded. With just a couple of holes left and Woods at even par, he double-bogey and hit two more bogeys to finish at 4-over 74.

One thing is clear after the rain shortened day yesterday. The players who had to play early at Bethpage ran into a quagmire. The course was still trying to dry out from yesterday making conditions horrible in the mourning. But the afternoon is shaping up real nicely after the course dried out.

With conditions improving at Bethpage we are seeing quite a few low scores. Which is amazing because Bethpage is suppose to be one of the toughest courses in America. Right now Mike Weir and Peter Hansen are leading with a score of 4-under. One of the biggest surprises is the reemergence of David Duval. Duval is tied at third with a 3-under 67. Duval is the pleasant surprise because he fell of the radar in the golf world, because of a chronic back pain. Besides Mikelson, Duval should be a huge crowd favorite.

Also last year's Cinderella story Rocco Mediate is at 1-under. Mediate is playing like he did last year in San Diego. Also Phil Mikelson is tied at 1-under and NBC can't stop talking about his wife Amy fighting breast cancer, every time they go to his shot.
