Baseball Players and Freak Injuries

Baseball players and freak injuries go together like peanut butter and jelly. And they only happen to baseball players. You never hear stories about how Tom Brady sprained his thumb using a recliner like Mike Remlinger back in the day. No basketball player is dumb enough to iron a shirt he's wearing and burn himself like John Smoltz.

Bizarre injuries just happen to baseball players for some reason. And they've struck this year already. Francisco Rodriguez had to miss a game for the Brewers because he stepped on a cactus. Yes he stepped on a cactus.

And Josh Beckett of the Dodgers has now injured his thumb on the clubhouse doors. From Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times:

"Beckett said his thumb was caught in a set of doors leading into the clubhouse about 10 days ago."

Are you fucking kidding me? Only this shit happens to baseball players and it happens all the time. Baseball players seriously need to be wrapped in bubble wrap at all times when they're not on the diamond.

God Hates Sacramento

Sacramento Kings, Official Media Release

FRANCISCO GARCIA SUFFERS FRACTURED FOREARM

Friday, October 9, 2009: SACRAMENTO, CA -- Sacramento Kings swingman Francisco Garcia today fractured his right forearm during a weight lifting session before practice. He will undergo surgery tomorrow morning. Garcia is currently in his fifth NBA season (all with the Kings).

Well Kings fan, God officially hates us. Between game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, losing 17 games last year and not getting the first overall draft choice, to this.

Garcia is one of the few Kings players who plays defense and Garcia would have also been the Kings third leading scorer. Now with Garcia injured, the Kings have to look to Desmond Mason, Donte Green, Andres Nocioni, and rookie Omri Casspi to replace Garcia for at least six weeks now.

And why was Garcia lifting weights? And what was he lifting? Was he lifting Sean May?

I guess I will just expect the Kings to win 17 games again. This sucks................

Baseball Update: Freak Baseball Injuries

The Baseball Update is a look at the happenings around Major League Baseball

Baseball players are known to hurt themselves in freakish ways. And for some reason these injuries only happen to baseball players. You never hear stories about football players, hockey players, or basketball players injuring themselves in bizarre ways.

Well we have another bizarre baseball injury. Ryan Dempster broke his big toe on his right foot after jumping over the dugout fence. He will be out of action for a month. Check out the picture to the right. The little kid is pointing and laughing at Dempster.

This isn't the first bizarre injury and it won't be the last. But for now, let's take a look at the bizarre baseball injuries of the past.

Roger Craig, San Francisco Giants: This one is my personal favorite. He once cut his hand on a bra strap. I'm sure that didn't affect his performance though.

Clint Barmas, Colorado Rockies: Broke his collar bone while caring dear meat up stairs. He was out for three months.

Terry Mulholland, Minnesota Twins: Scratched his right eye by rolling over a loose feather in a hotel pillow.

Mike Remlinger, Chicago Cubs: Broke his left little finger after getting his hand caught between two reclining chairs.

John Smoltz, Atlanta Braves: I want Smoltz pitching a game 7 for me. I would prefer though, he never iron a shirt again. Smoltz burned himself ironing a shirt-while he was wearing it.

Glenallen Hill, Toronto Blue Jays: I think we have all had a nightmare before. But have you ever been injured by your nightmare? Well Glenallen Hill has. While have a nightmare about being covered in spiders, Hill fell out of bed and right onto a glass table injuring himself.

Wade Boggs, Boston Red Sox: Good ole Wade once injured himself slipping on a pair of cowboy boots.

Sammy Sosa, Chicago Cubs: Sosa gave himself back spasms with a sneeze. Have ever sneezed so hard, that you through out your back?

Adam Eaton, San Diego Padres: Eaton accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach with a paring knife while trying to unwrap a DVD a few years ago.

Bret Barberie, Florida Marlins: He inadvertently rubbed chili juice in his eyes. He missed a game. But at least he married a hottie.

Steve Sparks, Milwaukee Brewers: He dislocated his shoulder while trying to tear a phone book in half. Leave that up to the Incredible Hulk, Steve.

Kevin Mitchell, San Francisco Giants: Mitchell had to have a root canal after biting into a microwaved donut.

Marty Cordova, Baltimore Orioles: All right we all know baseball players get a lot of sun. They play a majority of games out in the sun. So why does a player need to go to a tanning booth? Well apparently Cordova was burned so bad in a tanning booth, that he had to miss some games.

Jeff Kent, San Francisco Giants: Once broke his wrist. He said he was washing his pickup and slipped. Well that was a lie. He broke his wrist while preforming motorcycle tricks.

Mickey Tettleton, Detroit Tigers: Once missed some action for athlete's foot- because he tied his shoes too tight.

Ryan Klesko, Atlanta Braves: He pulled a muscle while picking up his lunch tray.

Rey Quinones, Seattle Mariners: He once couldn't pinch hit because he returned to the clubhouse to play Nintendo.

Ken Griffey, Jr., Seattle Mariners: Once pinched his testicle on his protective cup. Let's just move on.

Terry Harper, Atlanta Braves: Separated shoulder because he was waving home a teammate.

Rickey Henderson, Toronto Blue Jays: Missed a game because of frost bite-in August!

Vince Coleman, St. Louis Cardinals: Missed entire 1985 World Series after being rolled up into a tarp machine.

Nolan Ryan, Houston Astros: Not even hall of fame players are immune to freak injuries. Ryan injured his hand after a coyote bit him.

Mike Matheny, St. Louis Cardinals: Cut himself with a hunting knife that a teammate gave to him.

The list literally goes on and on. And half of these injuries you couldn't make up. So here's to the next freak baseball injury.

When Do Celtics Fans Start Panicking?

While both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic are getting stronger as the season moves closer to the end, the Boston Celtics have been slumping. And Kevin Garnett sitting out until April 12 doesn't help.

"The Celtics, 56-19 and percentage points behind Orlando for the second seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, could be without Garnett, their All-Star forward and emotional leader, until an April 12 visit to Cleveland.

Garnett, the NBA Defensive Player of the Year a season ago, has missed 14 games with a strained right knee, an injury he suffered Feb. 19 at Utah. He returned for a four-game stretch beginning March 20 against San Antonio, but never played more than 18 minutes and has not seen game action since an 84-82 loss to Orlando March 25."
The Celtics just haven't looked right since the all-star break. While they still have experience over both Cleveland and Orlando, injuries have been hurting them. And Garnett is no different.

I don't have a good feeling about them this season. Too many injuries and Cleveland keeps getting stronger as the season moves on.

That noise you just heard, is Celtics fans hitting the panic button.

Greg Oden To Miss Some More Time

After sitting out for seven games already, Portland's Greg Oden will sit out for 7-10 more days.

Oden, who has missed the team's last seven games after chipping his kneecap on Feb. 12, is due to miss another four to six games under the latest timetable for his return, according to the report. He missed six games early this season with a foot injury.
Oden, who missed his entire rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee, traveled with the team on its three-game trip road last week but did not play. Coach Nate McMillan said Oden "didn't look good," when he tried running during a practice in Minnesota, according to The Oregonian.
I know this has been talked about, but did Portland draft another Sam Bowie?

Sam Bowie will always be remembered as the player drafted ahead of Michael Jordan. While Jordan went on to become the greatest basketball player of all-time, Bowie had an injury plague career.

You can start drawing parallels between Bowie and Jordan to Oden and Kevin Durant. Durant is 4th in the league in scoring and will most likely become a dominate player. Meanwhile Oden has spent the majority of his career on the bench.

While I wouldn't give up on Oden yet, if I was a Portland fan, I would be worried.

This is where Oden spends the majority of his time.

Bad Luck or a Future Problem?

LA Times had a piece today on Andrew Bynum's knee injuries. He has sustained two major knee injuries so far in his young career. While those injuries have happened to both of his knee's they are saying it's bad luck. Is it bad luck or could it be a future problem?

We all remember Sam Bowie as the player chosen ahead of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft. Bowie had a long history with leg problems. Same thing with Bill Walton. Greg Oden has been hearing the same thing now.

What I am trying to get to is that one knee problem could lead to a lifetime of heartache. They can call it bad luck, but I am going to be more realistic with it.
