1st Down: Week 2 Observations

Week 2 observations from a fat guy on his couch watching the games. None of this will make any sense at all.

- The Jets humbled the Patriots in a 28-14 victory. Mark Sanchez was impressive for the Jets going 21 for 30 with 220 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. There are two different Mark Sanchez's that play football. One Make Sanchez looks like a miniature version of Joe Montana against the Patriots. The other version of Sanchez throws a ton of picks, looks confused and folds under pressure. He's a maddening quarterback who you'll either love or hate if your a Jets fan.

- Karma is a bitch and right now it's a bitch for Minnesota. The Vikings wanted to sleep with Brett Favre, now they're waking up Gonorrhea. The Vikings lost a 14-10 slugfest to the Miami Dolphins at home, giving Favre his first loss ever at the Metrodome. Favre threw three interceptions and fumbled in is own red zone which was recovered for the eventual game-winning touchdown. Favre looked like his old self, throwing interceptions when he should have never thrown a pass to begin with. I don't feel sorry for the Vikings. They wanted this guy desperately, now they have him.

1st Down: Week 1 Observations and Notes

1st Down are observations and notes of Sunday NFL games by a fat guy on a couch. It's all nonsense, but it's a good read.

- Let's first start with that 31-6 disaster in Seattle. There's no other way to describe this game than a complete meltdown by the 49ers. They looked like the team that I predicted wouldn't make the playoffs. Everything that could possibly go wrong in this game for the 49ers happened. Turnovers, blown coverage, terrible line play, red zone failings, and horrendous clock management. While Alex Smith looked terrible, this was a complete team failing. If Mike Singletary wants to be the greatest coach ever, he needs to go back to school on clock and timeout management.

As for the Seahawks, they started slow but looked tremendous after the 1st quarter. Matt Hasselbeck looked like his Pro Bowl self when he was given time, completing crisp passes and running for 1st downs. I don't know how long Pete Carroll's happy-go-lucky act will last in Seattle, but it's working right now.

- Hell of a time for Randy Moss to go on a rant about his contract status with the New England Patriots. The Patriots humbled Cincinnati and Moss picked the wrong time to go off on the Patriots about his contract. This gist of the rant is that Moss feels "unwanted" by the Patriots because they refuse to extend his current contract. Moss is a free agent after the end of the season and he pretty much said he'll probably be playing for a different team.

This is going to be an issue all season long. This is what happens with Randy Moss. He's happy for maybe a season or two, before he burns his bridge and is sent packing. It happened in Minnesota and Oakland and will probably happen in New England. That is of course, Brady and Wes Welker don't pull a code red on Moss.

1st Down- Week 16

- The Indianapolis Colts once again have decided to rest their starters before the postseason. Some people are mad at this decision because the Colts didn't go after the perfect season. I'm mad at this decision because of the Colts history.

This isn't the first time the Colts had a chance to go undefeated heading into the playoffs and decided to pull their starters. Tony Dungy pulled the starters in 2005 after the death of his son. Injuries have also caused the Colts in 2007 and 2008. All three times the Colts have gone on to lose in the playoffs.

That's why pulling the starters this year makes no sense. The Colts track record says don't rest the starters. Manning is only .500 in the playoffs and also has a track record of choking the playoffs. The Colts will pay for resting their starters in the postseason.

- Lost in all the talk about the Colts resting their starters and blowing the undefeated season, the New York Jets have a chance at sneaking into the playoffs. The Jets control their own destiny heading into the last week of the season. All they have to do is beat a Cincinnati team that has already wrapped up their division. We might see another Colts situation next week with the Bengals.

- Steve Smith is an animal. During the Panthers thrashing of the Giants, Smith caught a touchdown pass and broke his arm. Here's the crazy part of the story, Smith wants to play next week in a meaningless game against the Saints.

Smith is definitely one of a kind. It's too bad John Fox had to decide his own fate by starting Jake Delhomme so many times to a point, that the Panthers were eliminated from the playoffs. Matt Moore has proven in two games that he is much more capable of running the teams offense than Delhomme. It's a shame that we don't get to watch Smith in the playoffs.

- Thanks for showing up against Tampa Bay, Saints. Even your owner is celebrating prematurely.

- A quick congratulation of the 49ers Frank Gore. Gore became the first Niners running back ever to rush for four 1,000 yard seasons. That's a hell of an accomplishment when you think about the running backs that have come through San Francisco. Gore is also very close to becoming the Niners all-time rusher, a mark that Joe Perry set back in the 1950's. Gore has been a constant professional even though the players around him aren't.

Here's to you Frank.

GORE! GORE! GORE!

1st Down- Week 15

- Getting lost in the last second touchdown pass by Ben Roethlisberger to Mike Wallace, was the fact that Roethlisberger threw for over 500 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Only two quarterbacks in the history of the NFL have ever done what Roethlisberger did yesterday. Pittsburgh some how kept their playoff hopes alive and set up a key rematch at home with the Ravens next week.

- Ben wasn't the only one making records. After the Colts victory on Thursday Night, they improve their record to 14-0 on the season. Only two other teams, the 72 Dolphins and the 07 Patriots, have ever started the season 14-0. The Colts have also broke the record for the longest win streak in the NFL with 23 straight wins. The Colts only have the Jets and Bills left to play on the season.

- Some guy named Jerome Harrison rushed for 286 yards for the Cleveland Browns against the Kansas City Chiefs. Harrison shattered Jim Brown's team record and was 11 yards shy of the all-time mark. During yesterday's game, we saw two coaches going in complete opposite direction. Eric Mangini might save his job, despite Mike Holmgren being hired as the team president. While Todd Haley might not be fired, but is there a specific reason why he should be back next season?

- I'm still not sure what bandwagon I should jump on in the NFC? Minnesota is not exactly playing well during this late stretch. Who knows what the relationship is like between Favre and Childress after Childress tried to bench Favre in last night's loss.

Breaking sports news video. MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL highlights and more.

The Eagles look suspect. Going into halftime with a 20-3 lead, the Eagles let the 49ers right back into the game in the third quarter before finally closing the door. Oh McNabb looked good, but do you really trust a team that let a mediocre Niners team with Alex Smith as their quarterback back into the game? I don't.

Arizona is impossible to figure out. They lose badly to the Niners on Monday night and almost give away a game to Detroit. New Orleans really didn't look like a Super Bowl contender against Dallas. And do you really trust Tony Romo in a playoff game? Also Green Bay's defense gave up over 500 passing yards. I don't trust a single team in the NFC.

- Hey 49ers fans, what do you think of Alex Smith now? And do you still believe in him? Because I don't. I don't trust a quarterback who has to be put in a system that suits his skills. A great quarterback should be put in any system and be able to succeed. And why do so many people make excuses for this guy? Did anyone else see Singletary cursing at Vernon Davis after Smith's first interception? Smith threw that ball into double coverage and also put too much air on that ball. The Niners actually have talent on offense. Smith is 3-5 since being named starter back in October and has shown improvement, but has he shown enough? I don't think he has.

- Oh yeah, Tommy Kelly lost his pants while Denver is having another late season collapse.

1st Down- Week 13

Minnesota 17 Arizona 30: Brett Favre finally had a bad game. Favre threw two interceptions, sacked three times, and only threw for 275 yards with a 66% completion rating. Minnesota's defense was exposed in this game. If Jarred Allen or any other Viking can't get pressure on the quarterback, their secondary is greatly exposed. The Viking defense gave up 113 yards on the ground and 285 yards through the air against Arizona. Also they lost E.J. Henderson for the year to this grisly injury. (This video may cause your stomach to turn, you've been warned)

Tennessee 17 Indianapolis 27: So much for Tennessee and Vince Young turning the page and making a late playoff push. Young threw an interception and fumbled against the Indianapolis defense that only gave up 127 rushing yards to Chris Johnson. The Colts stay undefeated on the year and could possibly rest their starters for the rest of the season. Midnight finally struck on the Titans playoffs hopes after this game.

Oakland 27 Pittsburgh 24: I watched the 4th quarter of this game and still don't believe it. Bruce Gradkowski lead the Raiders on three scoring drives in the 4th quarter to beat the Steelers. The Raiders last drive saw Louis Murphy catch a touchdown pass with 9 seconds remaining in the game. The Steelers have to stay together these last few remaining weeks. Meanwhile it's no coincidence the Raiders have won two games with Jamarcus Russell on the bench.

New Orleans 33 Washington 30 in OT: I'm not a big believer in destiny, but after watching the Saints somehow win this game in overtime I believe in destiny now. The Saints stayed undefeated by winning an improbable overtime game against Washington. Poor Jim Zorn, his team played their best game of the year and still lost. The Redskins had a chance to put this game out of reach in the fourth quarter, but kicker Shaun Suisham missed a 23-yard field goal that gave Saints life. Drew Brees hit Robert Meachem with a 53-yard touchdown pass to send the game into overtime. Then the Saints kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime. I'm a believer now.

New England 21 Miami 22
: Uh oh, New England. Don't look now, but both Miami and New York are only one game behind the Patriots and both teams split games with the Patriots this year. The Patriots are reeling after this loss. Are the Patriots just not that good anymore or is it something different? We do know this, the Patriots offense doesn't scare anyone, anymore. Brady threw two interceptions and the Patriots were stuffed on another crucial 4th and short in the red zone. Miami kicker Dan Carpenter kicked a game-winning field goal with a 1:02 left in the game. The Patriots had a chance to comeback and win the game, but Brady threw his second interception of the day, that gave Miami the victory. There is definitely something wrong with the Patriots.

1st Down- Week 12

Arizona 17 Tennessee 20: With Kurt Warner hurt, Matt Leinart was asked to step up for the Cardinals against the Titans. Also it would be a rematch for Leinart against Vince Young from the 2006 Rose Bowl. And once again, Leinart would have his heart broken by a miraculous Vince Young game-winning touchdown drive. With 2:27 left in the game, Vince Young drove Tennessee 99 yards for the game-winning touchdown pass to Kenny Britt. Chris Johnson once again rushed for over 150 yards and firmly stamped his name into the MVP discussion.

Indianapolis 35 Houston 27: Poor Houston, they just seem like they can't beat Indianapolis. A couple weeks after Kris Brown missed a game-winning field goal in Indianapolis, Houston blew a 13-point halftime lead. And they thought the Sage Rosenfels helicopter fumble was painful. Peyton Manning threw two 2nd half touchdown passes and Houston quarterback Matt Schaub was picked off for a touchdown. Indianapolis won the AFC South later in the day with Jacksonville losing to San Francisco.

Pittsburgh 17 Baltimore 20 in OT: Pittsburgh was heading into the Baltimore game already with bad attitudes and bad feelings. Losing in overtime after their first-time starting quarterback threw a back-breaking interception, probably didn't help the feelings in the Pittsburgh locker room. After Dennis Dixon thew an interception to Baltimore's Paul Kruger, Billy Cundiff was able to hit a game-winning 29-yard field goal. Both Pittsburgh and Baltimore have a 6-5 record and are both on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.

Washington 24 Philadelphia 27: Oh Washington, you looked so good in this game and still lost. Washington headed into the 4th quarter with a 21-16 lead. Philadelphia drove down the field in the 4th quarter and scored a touchdown and converted the 2-point conversion to tie the game. And just like that, Washington had no chance. Philly drove down the field late in the fourth quarter and had David Akers kick the game-winning field goal. Andy Reid of course tried to do everything in his power to give the game to Washington.

Jacksonville 3 San Francisco 20
: So much for that Mike Singletary running philosophy. The Niners threw the ball 41 times out of 61 plays. Alex Smith actually looked like a real quarterback in the game completing 27 passes out of 41 attempts for 232 yards and two touchdowns. The Niners defense sacked Jacksonville quarterback David Gerrard six times and forced two fumbles. Jacksonville kicker Josh Scobee also missed two field goals in the game.

Create a Caption: Side Manning Face!

Picture of the Day: Bay Area native Captain Sully was honored by the Niners during halftime. He had the honor of standing beside Niners legend Keena Turner.

November 23, 2009

1st Down- Week 11

Pittsburgh 24 Kansas City 27 in OT: Not a good couple of weeks for Pittsburgh. They lose to Cincinnati and basically concede the AFC North. Then Troy Polamalu will be out for a month. Then Ben Roethlisberger has to leave the game against Kansas City with a concussion. And if all that wasn't bad enough, then they let Kansas City tie the game late in the 4th quarter and let Kansas City beat them in overtime. Not a good week in Pittsburgh.

Indianapolis 17 Baltimore 15: The Ravens made four big mistakes in this game. 1. They forced 3 Colts turnovers, but were only able to come away with field goals the entire game. 2. Joe Flacco threw an inexcusable interception in the fourth quarter near his own goal line. 3. John Harbuagh burned a timeout before he challenged a play. Then he lost that challenge and was out of timeouts late in the fourth quarter. 4. Ed Reed made an inexcusable lateral during a punt return with time running out. He lateraled the ball, that was fumbled and picked up by Indianapolis. The Ravens are going to regret this game for a long time.

Philadelphia 24 Chicago 20: Well we all knew Jay Cutler would throw an interception in this game. What we didn't know was that he only threw one interception and that interception would come in the worst possible time. I can't really blame Cutler for that interception because the ball was tipped. In the end Cutler played an all right game, he completed some throws and missed some. The Eagles on the other hand, I'm done trying to figure them out. Also Devin Hester lost his pants in this game.

Cincinnati 17 Oakland 20
: On the day Oakland remembered Marquis Cooper, the Raiders played their most inspired game. Bruce Gradkowski, who started his first game since 2006, threw a game-tying touchdown to Louis Murphy with 33 seconds left in the game. Then on the ensuing kickoff, Bengal Andre Caldwell fumbled the kickoff return that was recovered by the Raiders. Sebastian Janikowski kicked the game-winning field goal, a few plays later. A great weekend for East Bay football teams, as Cal also beat their cross-Bay rival in Stanford the day before.

Cleveland 37 Detroit 38: Who knew the most exciting game of the day would be between the Browns and Lions? Cleveland was finally able to break through their terrible offensive streak by scoring four touchdowns, which were also four Brady Quinn touchdowns. But if you needed more proof that Eric Mangini needs to be fired, you just have to look at the end of this game. With Matthew Stafford injured and time running out, Mangini inexplicably calls a timeout. That gave enough time for Stafford to recover and throw a game-winning touchdown. I would fire Mangini today if I ran the Browns.

Washington 6 Dallas 7: This game never happened, okay.

Create a Caption: Leave the Ravens alone!

November 16, 2009

1st Down- Week 10

New England 34 Indianapolis 35: I thought Bill Belichick was suppose to be the smartest man in the room? Then why did Belichick decide to go for it on 4th and 2 from his own 28 yard line with 2:08 left in the game? That's not what I would call a smart decision, especially since Peyton Manning is the opposing quarterback. Well we all know how the game ended. Manning drove the Colts down the field and threw a touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne. Game over, thanks for choking the game away Hoodie.

Philadelphia 23 San Diego 31: I could recap this game for you, but I'm boring compared to Justin from Fire Andy Reid Now!. So let Justin recap the Eagles loss to San Diego.

Not so fast. Thanks to horrible coaching by the master of it, Andy Reid truly did win the Battle of Inept Coaching. Being way too passive early in the game including not running a QB sneak during a 3-play series of down and goal at the 1 and then not going for it on 4th down despite never losing yards combined with early failed redzone conversions and other field goal attempts when the Eagles should have gone for it on 4th down resulted in the live blog.

Make no mistake about it, they deserved to lose that game. But make no mistake about it, they damn sure should have won it. The Chargers and Norv got completely passive on defense at the end of the game by playing a soft zone instead of bringing what was effective in the first couple of drives when the Eagles could not move the ball for the life of them.

Reid blew what would have been two critical timeouts in the 2nd half. And while the offense eventually got a rhythm, the Eagles 4-minute defense is just deplorable. They could not get the stop last week against Dallas and they failed to do so again until much too late this week against San Diego. As much as I hate to say it, the Eagles really do miss Jim Johnson.

Another thing they need to do: avoid penalties. Penalties killed so many drives that game it is not even funny. Bad discipline will kill you each and every single time, especially when you play as inconsistent as the Eagles like to do.

Just a terrible coaching performance by Reid wasting a stellar performance by Jason Avant who channeled his inner Miles Austin and and a very good performance by Donovan McNabb who despite early struggles, threw for 450 yards and did not make any major mistakes.
Denver 17 Washington 27: Remember when Denver was 6-0 and Josh McDaniels was proclaimed a genius? Well since then, Denver has lost three in a row and are all of a sudden tied in the AFC West with San Diego. Lost in the fact that Denver is on a three game skid, is that Washington actually won a game. Sure it did take this crazy fake field goal attempt to win the game, but still. Washington won a game!

">

Dallas 7 Green Bay 17: So the old dog still has his legs. Charles Woodson forced two fumbles and picked off Tony Romo in Green Bay's win against Dallas. Green Bay was able to keep their season alive by controlling the clock for 35 minutes and holding Dallas to only 278 of total offense. Aaron Rodgers though was still sacked four times in the game.

Buffalo 17 Tennessee 41: Chris Johnson is a beast, that's all.

Cincinnati 18 Pittsburgh 12: There was only one touchdown in this entire game. One. And that was on a kick return. Other than that, this was a defensive battle that saw neither team have more than 230 total yards on offense and one turnover. In the end the Bengals beat Pittsburgh for the second time this season and has effectively won the AFC North.

1st Down- Week 9

Dallas 20 Philadelphia 16: After I praised Andy Reid last week, he goes out this week and disappoints me. Reid made two stupid challenges that cost his team timeouts, including a precious timeout the Eagles were left without at the end of the game. With no timeouts left and the Eagles stopped on third down, Reid sent his field goal unit on the field. David Akers made the kick, but the Eagles had no timeouts and Dallas picked up a first down and ended the game. I'm also glad to see I'm not the only person confused by the Eagles.

Tennessee 34 San Francisco 27: Have I talked before about how much I hate Alex Smith? He's an interception machine. And against Tennessee, the ugly side of Smith reared it's ugly head. Smith threw three interceptions and fumbled once, all times leading to Tennessee points. Shaun Hill may have a noodle for an arm, but at least he doesn't throw interceptions. You could also see where this game was headed after this Justin Gage catch.

21 San Diego 20 New York Giants: Phillip Rivers drove the Chargers 80-yards down the field to throw a game-winning touchdown to Vincent Jackson with 21 seconds left in the game. If the Giants season wasn't on life support after the Eagles thrashing, then it certainly is now. Also how about the sweet revenge for Phillip Rivers against the team that traded him on draft day.

20 Carolina 30 New Orleans: The Saints are just that good. After going into halftime down 17-6, New Orleans exploded for 24 points in the 2nd half while holding the Panthers to only 3 points. The Saints are one out of two teams that are still undefeated and they aren't even down yet.

17 Washington 31 Atlanta: If it couldn't get any worse for Washington, now their players are starting melee's on opposing team's sidelines. Take a guess who started the melee on Atlanta's sideline? Yep none other than former Falcon and noted hot head DeAngelo Hall. My favorite part of this story is Hall's quote after the game, "It's different when a coach comes over there to break guys up," Hall said after the game "When a coach comes over there to put his hands on you in a harmful way, something needs to be done about that. . . . I'm going to call Commissioner Goodell. Ray Anderson used to be with Atlanta. I know him very well from there. He's the vice president [of football operations] over there in the league office. I'll definitely going to be calling some of my friends to figure out what we can do about the situation." Go get em, DeAngelo.

17 Miami 27 New England: The Wildcat didn't burn New England on this day. A year after the Dolphins unleashed the Wildcat on the Patriots and the world, New England was able to contain both Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. The Patriots were burned by a Ronnie Brown touchdown pass, but nothing else on the day. Also in the game, Randy Moss made this incredible catch.

1st Down- Week 8

1st Down is a recap of the Sunday NFL action. Home teams in all caps.

30 BALTIMORE 7 Denver: Baltimore ended their three game losing streak and gave Denver their first loss of the season in convincing style. Baltimore beat Denver in all facets of the game including a kickoff return touchdown by Lardarius Webb. Baltimore's defense held Denver to only one touchdown and 200 total yards of offense.

18 INDIANAPOLIS 14 San Francisco: The Niners held the lead for most of this game and held Peyton Manning to no touchdown throws, but they still lost. Manning drove the Colts down the field when he needed to. One thing I do have a lot of respect for the Colts is how they played in the 4th quarter. They got the ball back deep in their territory with over 6 minutes to play. Normal teams would have ran the ball to kill clock. Not the Colts. They played for the win, instead of playing not to lose. The only touchdown of the day for the Colts was a halfback pass by Joseph Addai.

38 Minnesota 26 GREEN BAY: The Packers were Favre'd again. Only this time Favre came to them and punked Green Bay in their own house. Packers players also punked themselves with penalties. Green Bay was called for 3 penalties for 45 yards. One of those penalties was a John Jolly personnel foul that lead to a Adrian Peterson touchdown. Penalties and sacks were Green Bay's undoing in this game. Hopefully these two teams meet in the playoffs.

40 PHILADELPHIA 17 NY Giants: Say what you want about Andy Reid, but on this day he out-coached Tom Coughlin and the entire Giants coaching staff. Take Desean Jackson's 54-yard touchdown catch. Jackson and the rest of the Eagles prepared to run this specific play when the Giants where in Cover 2. When they saw the Giants in Cover 2, they called the play and Jackson is celebrating in the end zone. Maybe because San Francisco hasn't had a great offensive-minded coach in a while, but I would take Andy Reid in a heartbeat if Philadelphia was ever dumb enough to fire him.

17 St. Louis 10 DETROIT: Someone had to win! And yesterday it was the Rams on a late Steven Jackson touchdown run. Steve Spagnuolo picked up his first career win. Also during the game former Cal linebacker Zach Follett destroyed the Rams kick returner. Couldn't be prouder of my Cal guys.

30 Miami 25 NY JETS: So much for a gimmick offense? Well the gimmick offense never scored a point in the game. The Dolphins scored on two Ted Ginn Jr. kickoff return touchdowns, a Jason Taylor fumble recovery, and one Chad Henne touchdown pass. Neither Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams scored in the game and neither had more than 27 rushing yards. What's your excuse now Jets?

Create a Caption: It's almost too easy to make fun of Andy Reid.

1st Down- Week 7

1st Down is a recap of the NFL

27 Pittsburgh 17 Minnesota: Everyone had to know that eventually Brett Favre was going to make a mistake that would haunt his team. Against Pittsburgh, Favre made two mistakes. Favre fumbled which lead to a 77-yard touchdown. And then Favre threw a game-clinching interception which was returned for a 82-yard touchdown. We did get to see Adrian Peterson truck William Gay during the game.

24 Houston 21 San Francisco: At the beginning of this game, it looked like it was going to be another blowout. Houston was beating San Francisco 21-0 at halftime. After struggling in the first half, Niners QB Shaun Hill was pulled in favor of former 1st overall pick Alex Smith. Smith brought the Niners back by throwing three touchdowns to Vernon Davis. The 49ers had a chance at the end of the game to take the lead, but Alex Smith remembered he's still Alex Smith and threw an interception. Also Michael Crabtree made his debut in the game and caught five passes, which gives him more catches in one game than Darius Heywood-Bey has all season.

24 Arizona 17 New York Giants: This game wasn't about Kurt Warner and the Arizona offense as it was about the Arizona defense. The Cardinals defense forced four turnovers in the game, including intercepting Eli Manning three times. The Giants had a chance late in the game to tie the score, but Manning threw his third interception. Eli was even sacked three times in the game.

46 New Orleans 34 Miami: The Dolphins blew a 21-point lead to the Saints in this game. New Orleans scored 22-points in the 4th quarter to complete the Miami choke job. Ricky Williams had the quote of the week to signify the Miami choke job, via AP.

“This was our game to win,” Miami’s Ricky Williams said. “We fought and we fought. They just fought harder at the end.”

Go smoke another joint Ricky.

The rest of the NFL games this week were blowouts. So instead of doing more recaps, I will give some of the best pictures of this week.

For some reason Boxer Joe Calzaghe wore a Tampa Bay jersey during the England game.

Am I the only person who finds it odd that the Patriots play in England this week? Here's a team with an American soldier from the Revolutionary War on their helmet, that calls themselves the Patriots, and play in New England and they played in England.

October 19, 2009

1st Down- Week 6

1st Down is a recap of the NFL action every week

13 Oakland 9 Philadelphia: I'm mentioning this game first for several different reasons. This was a boring game which JaMarcus Russell didn't completely suck. He still threw two interceptions but had a higher completion rating than Donovan McNabb. That was just the beginning of the weirdness of this game.

Before the game even started, their was probably the biggest Michael Vick protest outside of the stadium that you will see outside of Philadelphia. There was a Pigeon that stopped the Eagles Brett Celek from catching the ball. Then after the Eagles lost, YouTube blew up with Eagles fans overreactions from the loss to the Raiders. Check out the video's here, here, and here. Oh and the Pigeon returned to help the Raiders on the Kickoff.

33 Minnesota 31 Baltimore: The Ravens can join the club with the 49ers and Packers. They were Favre'd. Brett Favre must be the luckiest player ever, because I can't even explain the breaks this guy has been catching so far. Yesterday with time running out, Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco lead the Ravens down the field to set up a possible game-tieing field goal. Then Steve Hauschka shanked a 44-yard field goal as time expired, to give the Vikings the win and the 6-0 start. You've just been Favre'd.

14 Kansas City 6 Washington: Oof! I guess someone had to win this game and that somebody was the Chiefs. Todd Haley won his first NFL game while Jim Zorn is lucky to be coaching the Redskins this mourning. Neither team scored a touchdown in this game. Both teams combined for six field goals and one safety. Zorn finally pulled Jason Campbell after the 1st half in favor of Todd Collins, but it didn't matter for the Skins.

27 Arizona 3 Seattle: Football is a weird sport. One week after the Seahawks scored over 40 points, the Seahawks only managed 3 points and 128 total yards on offense. Not only were the Seahawks bad on offense, but they can add Lofa Tatupu to the injured list as he is out for the year. The game was so bad for the Seattle, that Jim Mora couldn't even look Ken Whisenhunt in the eyes for the postgame hand shake.

16 Buffalo 13 New York Jets in Overtime: I don't know if the Jets coaching staff is arrogant or just plain stupid? The Jets racked over 300 rushing yards in the game, but Mark Sanchez kept throwing the ball. And Sanchez kept throwing the ball to the other team. Sanchez finished the day with five interceptions including his last interception in overtime. Ryan Lindell kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime after missing a field goal that would have won the game for Buffalo in regulation.

59 New England 0 Tennessee: Have to love New England and the Hoodie. Even after the Patriots go into halftime with the 45-0 lead, he sends Tom Brady back into the game for the 2nd half. And not only did the Hoodie send Brady back into the game in the 2nd half, but sent him in throwing. Brady added more salt in the wounds of the Titans by throwing a touchdown to Randy Moss to make the score 52-0 in the 3rd quarter.

I'm a believer in Karma. You do good things and good things will happen to you. I remember when the Patriots were running up the score on the Redskins and Joe Gibbs back in 2007. And do you remember what happened after that? That's right, David Tyree made "The Catch", the Patriots lost the Super Bowl, and Tom Brady injured his knee last season. New England is going to regret running up the score on Tennessee.

Video of the Day: I couldn't find this video on Saturday, so I give it to you today. Here's Cal's Jahvid Best's 93-yard run against UCLA.

1st Down- Week 5

1st Down is a weekly NFL recap

20 Denver 17 New England in OT: Who says Kyle Orton isn't a good QB? He has lead the Broncos in back-to-back weekends to come from behind wins. This week Orton lead the Broncos 98-yards down the field late in the 4th quarter that set up a Brandon Marshall game-tieing touchdown. Denver won the toss in overtime and drove down the field that set up a Matt Prater game-winning 41-yard field goal. Bad day all around for Boston natives, as the Red Sox were swept out of the playoffs by Angels.

41 Seattle 0 Jacksonville: This game is only worth mentioning for two reasons. First Matt Hasselbeck is back with a vengeance. Hasselbeck threw four touchdowns against a non-existent Jacksonville secondary. The other reason to mention this game is the pre-game antics of Owen Schmitt. Schmitt hit himself in the head with his helmet, gashing his own head. He had to be stitched up before he could play.

17 Cincinnati 14 Baltimore: Carson Palmer lead the Bengals on another late game-winning touchdown drive, but that wasn't the story of the game. The story of this game was Cincinnati's defense and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Zimmer's wife, Vikki, died on Thursday night before the game. Zimmer and his family traveled to Baltimore to attend the game. Zimmer's defense responded by only giving up 257 total yards and one offensive touchdown. Zimmer was given the game ball.

45 Atlanta 10 San Francisco: The 49ers came into this game cocky, and left humbled. The Falcons racked up 45 points and 477 total yards on offense. Quite frankly the 49ers needed to have their asses kicked. They came into the game cocky and arrogant and they needed to see how a real NFL team plays. Atlanta beat them in ever facet of the game. I'm sure head coach Mike Singletary will put his team through hell for the bye week leading up to their week 7 game at Houston.

6 Cleveland 3 Buffalo: Did this game really happen and no one told me about it? Look at that score. A Red Sox-Yankees game can produce more points than Cleveland and Buffalo. Both teams only had a combined 400 yards on offense and no touchdowns. A late field goal by Cleveland gave them the victory by default. It's not know yet if the Bills will fire head coach Dick Jauron yet.

20 Carolina 17 Washington: Oh, Washington. Are you really this bad that you let a winless Carolina team score the final 18 points in the game to beat you? This game was ugly all the way around. Jake Delhomme threw another interception in the game. Jason Campbell only threw for 145 yards. Neither team had more than 86 yards running the ball. And neither team had more than 16 first downs.

44 New York Giants 7 Oakland: I hate to agree with Mike & Mike in the Mourning, but JaMarcus Russell is so bad that the Raiders don't trust him to throw even when the team is down by a huge margin. Russell only attempted 13 passes in the entire game, even though the Raiders where down 31-7 at halftime. The Giants jumped out to such a huge lead, that they pulled Eli Manning before the 1st half even ended.

Video of the Week: This play by 49ers cornerback Dre Bly sums up the 49ers arrogance coming into the Atlanta game. I'm glad the Falcons poured it on them.

1st Down- Week 4

1st Down is a weekly recap of all the NFL action

27 New England 21 Baltimore: Don't ask Ray Lewis what he thinks of the roughing the passer penalties. Or you will get a response like this. "Both of the drives they got touchdowns on – personal fouls that kept the drives going. That’s embarrassing to our game. Fine me, do whatever you please. I’m not speaking against anybody. It’s embarrassing, for them to treat one person on the football field different than everybody else." New England did score two touchdown's that were helped out by two roughing the passer calls. Baltimore's offensive line was a disappointment all day, allowing pressure to get to Joe Flacco forcing him to throw bad passes.

37 Jacksonville 17 Tennessee: What did I say about Kerry Collins at the beginning of the season? I said Collins has never put together back-to-back good seasons. And it showed against Jacksonville. Collins threw two interceptions and just one touchdown. Tennessee is now 0-4 and Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher is sticking with Collins as of right now.

35 San Francisco 0 St. Louis: Sorry Rams but you have now lost 14 straight games. San Francisco pulled the trifecta yesterday scoring on Special Teams, Defense, and on offense. Both the defense and offense scored twice. Patrick "Bam Bam" Willis returned a Kyle Boller interception for a touchdown and Ray McDonald picked up a Rams fumble for a touchdown. Vernon Davis caught a touchdown pass in the game, his third in two weeks.

17 Denver 10 Dallas: Denver is now 4-0 after a come-from-behind victory over the Dallas Cowboys. with the Broncos losing 10-7 in the fourth quarter, Kyle Neckbeard Orton threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall to give Denver the lead while making one Eagles fan very happy. Tony Romo drove Dallas down into goal range with time running off but had both his 3rd and 4th down passes deflected away to give Denver the victory. I know everyone has said how mediocre Denver's wins have been, but you have to give them credit for winning this game.

24 New Orleans 10 New York Jets: Wait! Don't build your Mark Sanchez statues yet. Sanchez looked like a rooking against the Saints throwing a interception that was ran back for a touchdown and fumbling in the end zone which lead to another Saints touchdown. Drew Brees didn't even throw a touchdown pass in the game and New Orleans still won. Old Rex Ryan was so cocky after yesterdays game, “The Saints outplayed us today,” Ryan said. “They forced a lot of turnovers and scored with them. You’ve got to give them a lot of credit. They ran the ball pretty effectively against us as well.”

34 Indianapolis 17 Seattle: Peyton Manning torched the Seattle defense for 353 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. It's the first time Manning has topped over 300 yards in four consecutive games. Injuries have once again decimated Seattle. Matt Hasselbeck and Walter Jones were both sat out of the game and Seneca Wallace couldn't do enough to help Seattle avoid a third straight defeat.

23 Cincinnati 20 Cleveland, Overtime: This game had a bizarre ending. After Carson Palmer threw a game-tieing touchdown pass to Chad Ochocinco, Cleveland blocked the extra point and sent the game to overtime. The game looked like it was going to end in a tie, until Shayne Graham kicked a game-winning field goal for the Bengals with :3 seconds left on the clock.

38 Pittsburgh 28 San Diego: Poor Chargers, their defense probably couldn't have stopped the 49ers yesterday. The Chargers defense gave up 497 net yards in the game, including 320 passing yards. Phillip Rivers and the Chargers offense made the game interesting at the end, but the defense couldn't stop the Pittsburgh offense when they needed to.
