The official start of Summer doesn't start until Monday, but to me Summer starts when the NBA and NHL finals are over. Besides a few golf and tennis tournaments this summer and the women's world cup (which actually interests me because Alex Morgan is playing for the USA) we're alone with baseball until the beginning of September.
I love baseball as much as the next fella, but three months of nothing on but baseball can be taxing. Baseball is a slow methodical sport that can change in an instance while also stuck in neutral. I understand why some people can't stand the sport. So what do you do with yourself for the next two and a half months while waiting for college football to start?
Vacation: Everyone takes a little time off during the summer, even if it's only for a few days usually around the fourth of July. It's the time of the year to spend with the family outdoors in the sun while it lasts. I'm lucky that our family has a summer cabin in the woods that I can go to on the weekends. It's a great place to be while the time passes by.
Watch Golf and Tennis Tournaments: I'm not the biggest golf fan, so I don't get excited about watching the US and British Open. Golf is a sport I like to play, but hate watching it on TV. As for tennis, I will watch the Wimbledon. I feel like Wimbledon is the only tennis tournament that really matters.
Summer Movies: The summer movie schedule feels like it starts earlier in the year now and ends by the middle of August. The only summer movie I've been excited about to watch so far was the X-Men movie. I wasn't disappointed. I'm also excited to watch the Captain America movie, but that's about it for me with summer movies.
Following Lockout Stories: The NFL is currently locked out and the NBA will probably be locked out by the beginning of next month. Usually with these lockouts there some pretty good stories to come out of them. Only one problem though, there isn't a player representative as loquacious as Patrick Ewing and there isn't a commissioner who has grown the "lockout beard". Where's the fun in following the lockouts?
Baseball: This brings me back to my original point. From a sports standpoint, all what's left to watch is baseball. Baseball really is the perfect summer sport. It's slow moving and yet still a fun time in the sun. I'm going to enjoy baseball while I patiently wait for the college football season to start. Oh sure, I'll probably start getting the cold sweats after a while jonesing for the return of football or any other sport but I'm going to do my best and enjoy the summer season.
