Let's face it, Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun has had a rough month and a half. He had that dust up with the reporter, the hospital visit the day of UConn's 1st. round game, and now a probe that has said UConn broke NCAA rules.Yahoosports.com, broke the story NCAA rules in their recruitment of Nate Miles.
"Miles was provided with lodging, transportation, restaurant meals and representation by Josh Nochimson – a professional sports agent and former UConn student manager – between 2006 and 2008, according to multiple sources. As a representative of UConn’s athletic interests, Nochimson was prohibited by NCAA rules from having contact with Miles and from providing him with anything of value."
Also they might have broke the NCAA rules by exceeding the number of calls they could make to Miles.
"UConn may have committed major recruiting violations by exceeding NCAA limits on phone calls to Miles and those closest to him, records show. The NCAA allows a single phone call per month to a prospect or his family in a player’s junior year of high school. That limit was exceeded over several months from late 2006 into 2007. In December of 2006, for instance, Tom Moore, then a UConn assistant coach, made 27 calls to Miles’ guardian and a person Miles referred to as an uncle. Moore made three calls to Miles."
These are all major rules violations. The NCAA is sure to do an investigation along with UConn. So the question has to be asked. When does Jim Calhoun quit/resign?
He is getting up there in age. He will turn 67 in May. He doesn't need to coach any longer. What does he have left to prove? He has won two National Championships and over 800 games. He has done a terrific job coaching.
Also he has fought health problems for the last ten years. He missed a tournament game in 1999. In 2003 he battled with prostate cancer. In 2008 he underwent treatment for squamous cell carcinoma. Then he missed the 1st round game this year. His health has been giving him problems for years now, why continue to coach when your health should be your concern?
These are all questions that will be asked as more information leaks out about this probe. I don't see Calhoun going on much longer. His team this year has a great chance to make it to the Final 4. He could finish this season up, and retire. Then he won't have to deal with nosey reporters and worry about his health while trying to coach a team. It will be interesting to see what happens in Storrs, Connecticut in the coming months.
