Mos Eisley Conversation: Spring Storylines

Occasionally the Colonel and I will have a conversation that I'll transcribe here. Today's topic is on the opening of Spring Training and the never ending pointless storylines coming out of Florida and Arizona.

49er16: You gotta love the opening of spring training. Endless storylines being driven into the ground. Just for us Giants fans we have the Posey storyline driven into the ground. Did Posey recover? Is Bochy doing the right thing in telling Buster not to block the plate? Should Buster play more 1st base? I realize now that we 24 hour news coverage that a storyline is going to be driven into the ground. But do we really need 24/7 coverage of a single topic?

The Colonel: I know you're craving baseball and so am I, but do yourself a favor and don't follow spring training news until a couple of weeks before the season. By then the Posey storylines will mean something because the season is close to starting. Then you won't see the reports on Posey as pointless.

49er16: To get back though to the pointless storylines. While 24 hour news coverage can be great, wouldn't you agree 24 hour news coverage can be awfully redundant?

The Colonel: Absolutely. When you're covering or following the news it can be awfully redundant. That's why I'm staying away from the Giants spring training coverage until at least the second week of March. I don't need to know about Wilson's elbow or Posey's ankle until it's really important.

49er16: Let's just move on. My favorite pointless storyline from yesterday was that people were reporting that Albert Pujols was practicing bunting. Pujols bunts so he's a team player! It was just too ridiculous.

The Colonel: That is one thing I enjoy about the 24-hour news coverage, the "superstar x is just like the regular players. He's bunting!" It's all ridiculous and these poor writers have to do it because they're being paid to provide content around the clock. So they have to talk about an Albert Pujols practicing bunting. I would almost feel sorry for the writers but they get to spend 6 weeks in Florida and Arizona watching baseball.

49er16: What other pointless storyline do you think is going to dominate the spring?

The Colonel: I saw that Yahoo! and ESPN already had Posey stories. So I think that's one storyline that is going to be driven 6 feet under until the season finally starts. That storyline is obvious important to us Giants fans, but I want to see what the rest of the team is up too. Posey isn't the entire team.

To get back to your original question, here are the storylines I believe will be driven into the ground for the next 6 weeks. How will Manny contribute to the A's? How will Fielder and Pujols adjust to the American League? Every little thing with the Red Sox will be dissected because of last year's collapse and the addition of Bobby V as the manager. How will the Cardinals adjust to not having Pujols? Will the Braun suspension be upheld?

  1. The Yankees becoming older and this year might be the final year for a championship for Jeter I'm sure will become a storyline.
