Yesterday ESPN hosted their 24 hour college hoops marathon. Here's some quick observations of the games from yesterday.
- I don't know if it was because of the goofy start times or just early jitters, but there were a lot of fouls yesterday. So much in fact, that it kind of ruined the marathon and turned every game into a snails race. While I didn't expect the games to be completely clean, I didn't expect some games to have over 70 fouls in a single game. If this continues throughout the season (I don't expect it will) college basketball will be dreadful this season.
- Is the Big Ten the best conference this season? After Ohio State traveled to Gainesville and thrashed the Gators by 18-points, the Big Ten might not only be the best conference but also the deepest. The usual suspects of Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue, and Ohio State are at the top while solid teams such as Wisconsin and Northwestern fill out the league. Indiana and Michigan are also improving, making the Big Ten possibly the deepest conference in the nation.
- This was suppose to be the year Virginia Tech made it to the NCAA tournament. After a couple of years of looking from the outside of the tournament this was suppose to be Virginia Tech's year. They returned Malcolm Delaney and were suppose to be better. So why were they exposed by Kansas State yesterday? For one, Delaney isn't a point guard. Injuries to J.T. Thompson and Allen Chaney have forced Delaney to play a position he isn't used to. That being said though, Virginia Tech shouldn't have lost to a Kansas State team that didn't play Curtis Kelly and when Jacob Pullen hardly played because of foul trouble. Virginia Tech could be in for another long year.
- Southern Illinois lost one of the most heartbreaking games I've seen in a while. With time running out in overtime against Northeastern, Salukis senior John Freeman yelled, "time!" Only one problem, the Salukis were out of timeouts. Uh oh! He pulled a Chris Webber. The Salukies were charged with a technical, Northeastern drilled the free throws, and the Salukis lost by one point. Heartbreaking.
