Time For Samurai Mike to Leave Now

Not everything is cigars and champagne in San Francisco at the moment. While the Giants will play in their first world series since 2002, the 49ers continued their dissent to the bottom of the NFL with an embarrassing loss to the previously winless Carolina Panthers. Now the word is the 49ers owners are displeased with head coach Mike Singletary and the entire 49ers coaching staff. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Singletary is fired after the 49ers return from London. I don't blame them. The 49ers are not only not living up to expectations, but are a undisciplined mess.

Yesterday alone the 49ers committed 11 penalties. The 49ers have committed 67 turnovers in seven games and have committed 11 penalties in the past two games. That's on the coaching staff and that's on Mike Singletary. He hasn't had the team in the right mind frame to play smart all season. I've jokingly said in our live blogs each Sunday, that the 49ers are the dumbest team in the NFL. Well looking at the penalties this team has committed so far this season, looks like I'm right.

I started this blog almost two years ago. At the time Mike Singletary was the interim coach for the 49ers and I debated whether or not he should be the head coach on a full-time basis. Here's what I said:

"Singletary though should provide a type of plan to the team if he wants to be the next coach. He has done great so far this season, but what is his future plan if he where named the coach. It has been rumored, the only reason Singletary hasn't received a job yet is because of his lack of plan while interviewing.

If he provides a future plan, than he is the right man for the job. The players listen to him, and he has an authority type of persona."

That was on December 16th, 2008. The 49ers would go on to beat the lowly Rams and the mediocre Redskins to finish the season on a two-game winning streak. I didn't know at the time 49ers owner Jed York would make Singletary the coach right after the Redskins victory without interviewing anyone else.

And needless to say, Singletary didn't have a single plan about how to put together a coaching staff. In hindsight we should have known the Singletary was going to be a failure when it took him over a month to find an offensive coordinator.

Let's backtrack first. When Singletary was the interim coach, Mike Martz was the offensive coordinator for the 49ers and Shaun Hill was the starting quarterback. Singletary and Martz was never going to work. A severe clash of personalities there. As we know Martz is a wide-open, pass first, second, third minded coach. Singletary is a run first, second, third minded coach. So the Singletary-Martz relationship was never going to work. So Singletary had to hire a offensive coordinator which was going to be a mess from the start.

Why would any young offensive mind want to work with Singletary? Singletary lives in a world where every team has Walter Payton and an outstanding defense. Predictably any qualified, young offensive mind said no to Singletary and his vision. Scott Linehan said he would rather work for a team that went winless for the entire year (The Lions) than work for Singletary. Clyde Christensen turned down the 49ers, because going from the Colts offense to what Singletary wanted is like going from a Corvette to a Ford Pinto. So who does Mike Singletary hire? None other than one of the worst offensive minds of all-time Jimmy Raye.

49ers fans should have known the Mike Singletary era in San Francisco was going to be a disaster just by looking at how he blundered the offensive coordinator hiring. Needless to say Mike Singletary fired Jimmy Raye earlier this year and the 49ers are still an undisciplined mess.

The 49ers have a lot of problems and the first one starts at head coach. The Mike Singletary era was a disaster before it ever started. It's time for Samurai Mike to leave now. It's time for the 49ers to hire a real head coach who can put together an actual coaching staff. It's time to start completely over.

I'm sure Mike Singletary is a good guy, a great motivator, and one of the greatest football players ever, but he is not head coaching material. I always wondered why the Atlanta Falcons wanted Bobby Petrino over Singletary and why Dallas wanted Wade Phillips over Singletary? I now know the answer. Singletary is a motivator and not a strategist. It's finally time for the 49ers to start over.
