The 49ers Fire Jimmy Raye

This comes as a surprise, because Mike Singletary said he wasn't going to make any changes concerning Jimmy Raye as the offensive coordinator just last night. I guess Singletary must have slept on it and then decided the 49ers needed a change at offensive coordinator because reportedly the 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye.
The 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, the NFL Network reported Monday morning, less than a day after head coach Mike Singletary said Raye would serve in that capacity for the remainder of the season.

The shakeup on the 49ers' coaching staff includes quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson's promotion to offensive coordinator. In that role, Johnson will be responsible for putting together the weekly game plan and calling plays.

Jimmy Raye had no business being the 49ers offensive coordinator in the first place. His play calling was about un-imaginative as it gets. When you run the ball between the guards 75 percent of the time, you're not going to be a successful football team. I also don't think Raye has a single clue what a play-action play is. His offensive mind was just plain terrible.

Will Raye's firing lead to success? I doubt it. While the players lost faith in Raye and his play calling, the problems run deeper than just Raye. Alex Smith can't complete a screen pass to save his life. Every time he throws in the flat to Frank Gore the ball goes flying over Gore's head. The offensive line is also a mess and Michael Crabtree has been a bust up to this point. Maybe this change helps the 49ers offense materialize, but I seriously doubt it.

  1. I agree with you Keith. There's more problems on offense than just Jimmy Raye.
