MLB Playoffs Day 1 Open Thread/Phillies Live Blog

49er16 and myself will be combining our ideas for what to do with the MLB Playoffs into one thread here at Keith's Sports Journal. I will be live blogging the Phillies games here and for the rest of the games, we will be conducting this like a Saturday college football open thread. Enjoy the games and leave comments!

Here is your vital information for today's games. (all times eastern)

Game 1: Rockies @ Phillies 2:37 (Jimenez, 15-12 vs. Lee, 14-13) (TBS - Brian Anderson and Joe Simpson, SR: David Aldridge)

Game 1: Twins @ Yankees 6:07 (Duensing, 5-2 vs. Sabathia, 19-8) (TBS - Chip Caray and Ron Darling, SR: Craig Sager)

Game 1: Cardinals @ Dodgers 9:37 (Carpenter, 17-4 vs. Kershaw, 11-7) (TBS - Dick Stockton and Bob Brenly, SR: Tom Verducci)

Game 1, Twins vs. Yankees:
The Phillies took game 1 against the Rockies, 5-1. Cliff Lee pitched a complete game, only giving up one run in the ninth inning. The Twins/Yankees game will start in about a half an hour.

"The wind must really be blowing. That's the first time I've seen Craig Sager's hair move." - Ron Darling (JFein)

"Fisted out of play." - Chip Caray (JFein)

TBS drinking game. Every time Caray says Fisted, drink. Every time that Ernie Johnson commercial airs, drink. You should be drunk by the seventh inning of this game.

2-0 Twins in the 3rd inning. C.C. Sabathia gave up three straight two out hits that lead to the Twins scoring a run. Then Jorge Posada gave up a passed ball which allowed Joe Mauer to score. Could the Yankees already be applying their hands around their throats?

"Minnesota scores first...and they score second, and lead by two" -Chip (AL)

Derek Jeter blasted a 2-run shot off of Duesning in the bottom of the 3rd to even the game at 2.

6-2 Yankees after 5. The latest 2 came from a deep 2-run shot by Hideki Matsui. Duensing is out of the game already and after starting out good, it appears as if the Twins have slowed down a bit.

"Big poppers for Minnesota working here." - Chip Caray (JFein)

A-Rod just singled in Derek Jeter to make the score 7-2 in the seventh inning. A-Rod actually has two RBI's in the game.

Mercifully it's over in the Bronx. The Yankees won 7-2 and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Hopefully we can get more exciting games in this series.

Game 1, Cardinals @ Dodgers:
Even though Randy Wolf loaded the bases in the first inning, he was able to get out of the inning by only allowing one run. Yadier Molina took after his big brother Bengie and grounded into a double play. 1-0 Cardinals in the first inning.

A Matt Kemp 2-run home run gives the Dodgers the 2-1 lead. Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter is lucky he only gave up two runs in that inning. The Dodgers were pounding every pitch they saw in that inning.

"I'm not quite sure if he knew where he hit that ball, he just knew he hit it hard." - Bob Brenly (JFein)

The Dodgers scored on a horrible throwing error by Mark De Rosa. The Dodgers are currently leading 3-1 in the fourth inning.

"Our first official beach ball on the field." - Bob Brenly (JFein)

Skip Schumaker knocked in a run in the fourth inning. Then with the bases loaded, Dodgers reliever Jeff Weaver got out of the jam. 3-2 Dodgers going into the bottom of the fourth.

"It is three to one, three to two in favor of the Dodgers." - Dick Stockton (JFein)

"Ethier safe on the infield hit...really an outfield hit." - Dick Stockton confusing himself and all of America. (JFein)

"I'm not sure if they're lion tames out there with those chairs or if they're trying to get away from foul balls" Stockton (kt1000)

"That has to rank up as one of the most exciting post season games in all of baseball." - Dick Stockton talking about last night's regular season game between the Tigers and the Twins. (JFein)

"What a job Carpenter has done tonight. He has toiled and then some, really earning his salary and then some." Stockton (kt1000)

This game is still in the 5th inning and it's almost nine o'clock on the West Coast. I feel sorry for the East Coast baseball fans. I'm sure they don't want to stay up this late to watch a baseball game on a weeknight.

Carpenter somehow escapes another inning, but he did give up another run. 4-2 Dodgers going into the sixth inning.

After six innings, the Dodgers lead 5-2. Russell Martin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

After eight innings, the Dodgers still lead it 5-2.

Broxton strikes out Ankiel and this game's finally over! 5-3 Dodgers over the Cards.

Thanks for hanging in there with this long game. 49er16 won't be around much tomorrow, but I should be. We'll have the same set up here as last time. I'll live blog the Phillies (with no 4:30 class!) and we'll have the open thread for the other 2 games. Good night and I'll chat with you later today!

218 comments:

  1. @ Jay: Yes, you were fine closing out the live blog. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  2. kt, actually closed out the blog. I will be in-and-out for the rest of the night. You might have to update this thread until Keith gets back.

    ReplyDelete
  3. "Will Cinderella's slipper fit for one more night?" - Chip Caray channeling his inner awful announcer, Corporal Cliche.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Is it bad that I actually like the Bon Jovi song that TBS keeps playing?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Bon Jovi is the best. Livin on a Prayer is still one of the most played songs on the radio.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Sager acting like a weatherman. I'm debating whether to watch/listen to TBS, listen to ESPN Radio, or listen to Twins Radio.

    ReplyDelete
  7. "The wind must really be blowing. That's the first time I've seen Craig Sager's hair move." - Ron Darling

    ReplyDelete
  8. And we thought the winds in Philly were crazy.

"The winds must be bad. That's the first time I've seen Craig Sager's hair move."- Darling

    ReplyDelete
  9. On ESPN Radio, Jon Miller is there but so is Steve Phillips. On Twins radio, John Gordon and Dan Gladden are not good painting the radio picture if it's to synched up to TV. Finally, if I mute the TV, I can't make any TBS crew comments.

As Olmec on Legends of the Hidden Temple would say...

The choices are yours and yours alone.

  10. Runner at 2nd, 1 out. I'm testing to see how I can automatically publish.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wild pitch moves Span to 3rd. Still have type verification code but decent. This should work.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oof, Joe Mauer stikes out.

    ReplyDelete
  13. What are the chances that the Twins can actually win this game?

    ReplyDelete
  14. If you want to play a drinking game that will surely end in your death, drink everytime Chip Caray says "fisted".

    ReplyDelete
  15. Cuddyer flies out. Nice clutch hitting Twins.

    ReplyDelete
  16. And thought for sure C.C. would give up a run in that inning. Until he proves it, I'm not buying C.C. as a "big game pitcher."

    ReplyDelete
  17. And drink if you see a blackberry promo.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I would love to see Sabathia and the Yanks fail. It would make watching the season-long Nats debacle worth it.

    First-pitch hit by "The Captain"

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Twins have no chance, no chance in hell! /Vince McMahon'd/

    ReplyDelete
  20. "Fisted out of play." - Chip Caray

    DRINK!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Caray said fisted! Drink!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gulp. Damon pops one up...doesn't actually go over wall for a homer. Shocking.

    ReplyDelete
  23. kt1000 must be pissed Teixeira, born in Mayland, went to the Yanks.

I'm pissed and I root for the O's!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Texeira grounds out. AFraud up, runner at 2nd

    ReplyDelete
  25. Duensing gets the Twins out of the inning.

    ReplyDelete
  26. "Driven to right field and caught."-Caray

He made it sound like it was a home run.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "The more things change, the more things stay the same" -Actually not Chip Caray but me on AFraud's continued PS failures.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jay, yes he did. It was a low line drive.

    ReplyDelete
  29. "They were really two winners last night" -Caray

That's not what the scoreboard or the Choking Dog Scale say.

    ReplyDelete
  30. +1 Al.

I'm going to go grab some dinner. Be right back.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No score, Bottom 2. I see I'm talking to myself.

P1: Hello, Al. How are you?

P2: I'm fine except my baseball team stinks.

    P1:So does mine.

P2: What is that pole Sager is holding?

P1: I don't know but I'm more worried about his suit. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ha! Nice conversation Al.

I want to watch the Twins bat next inning, then I have to type an essay real fast. It shouldn't take me longer than hour and a half. Then I will devot my full attention to baseball.

Until then, JFein will update the thread.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cano gone looking, scoreless after 2.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Keith, take your time. I've got nothing better to do.

Caray and Darling talking about Twins/Yanks circling about the ring, tentative early like a boxing fight.

A fight would make it way more exciting.

    ReplyDelete
  35. First miscall of this game, Pitchtrak says strike 3, ump doesn't. Punto singles.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "I firmly believe they gave Joe Girardi number 27 for a reason" -Chip on Pressure for Girardi to get Yanks to win 27th World Series.

    That's actually a great quote.

Followed by stat, Yanks have spent nearly 1.8 billion dollars since 2001.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The Yankees could have bailed out Wall Street all by themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cabrera singles after nearly striking out on a close pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Keith, why the hell didn't they? I would give them some goodwill. Mauer doubles, 2nd and 3rd.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Damn Mauer is good. The majority of his hits are in the opposite direction. You have to give him the MVP.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love Minnesota. They just keep grinding away. That's there 3rd straight 2 out hit.

    1-0 Twins

    ReplyDelete
  42. Blooper falls in! Cabrera scores! 1-0 Twinkies

    ReplyDelete
  43. Passed ball and Mauer scores!

    2-0 Twins

    ReplyDelete
  44. If Mauer was in New York, there would be no question, and he scores on the wild pitch!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Kubel strikes out.

"Minnesota scores first...and they score second, and lead by two" -Chip going to break.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm back and I can't believe the Twins are leading!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Okay, I'm eating dinner so I'm going idle. I can't type w/ dirty fingers.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Alright JFein, I have to work on a paper. Update the thread as the game goes along ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I never remember Chip Caray being good, but good grief, I don't remember him being this bad.

@ Al: Wasn't it you who mentioned the plays during the pre-recorded interview? There you go, a Melky Cabrera basehit during it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Jeter smacks one and it's tied at 2!

    ReplyDelete
  51. RIP Tony Fein.

He was an Iraq War veteran and an NFL rookie this year with the Baltimore Ravens before being cut on the day of the final roster cuts.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Um....okay....Girardi chose the 8-day series because of his bullpen. He wants to give them extra rest and apparently resting tomorrow is more important than resting today.

Really? The thought of forcing the Twins to play a playoff game less than 24 hours after what would turned out to be a classic extra innings war never crossed his mind?

Chip Caray was the source so there is a question of accuracy in that story....

    ReplyDelete
  53. Now I'm the one having a conversation with myself!

    - Hi, JFein!

    - Good evening, JFein, how abut those Phillies?

    - Awesome! Cliff Lee is the man. Isn't Tony Romo a moron, JFein?

    - You're absolutely right on both accounts, JFein.

    - Thank you, JFein

    - You're welcome, JFein.

    Wow....That was fun....

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm trying to concentrate on my paper, but all I hear is Carray/Darling suck off Jeter.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yankees take the lead on a basehit down the left field line.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm back. JFein, that's eery about Tony Fein. RIP Tony Fein.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Keith, concentrate on your paper. God, I sound like my parents...Caray/Darling sucking off Jeter was so predictacble after he homered. I wouldn't even make a bet, I'd lose money.

BTW, I leave for a few minutes and Duensing can't throw a strike unless it's really hard and Mauer can't catch a relay throw. I should've ate before the game.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Random question: How long until someone starts a blog entitled, "Line Drive Base Hit Caught Out There"?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Now Caray and Darling talking up Sabathia as he's Ron Guidry. Good grief.

    ReplyDelete
  60. 7 strikeouts for "C.C." according to Darling. You would never he works the Yanks' rival, the Mets.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Are they playing this game at Candlestick Park? The winds must be that bad if garbage is blowing on the field.

    ReplyDelete
  62. "Random question: How long until someone starts a blog entitled, "Line Drive Base Hit Caught Out There"?"

You know, JFein, I don't have a blog. I have an account now w/ Blogger, and it's free...

    ReplyDelete
  63. OT, Maybe I know why Keith is watching the game and doing his essay. It's almost 5:00 in San Fran. The times of our posts are in Pacific Time. I wish I had those extra hours.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Jeter walks, actually not the worst thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hot shot by Damon to Cuddyer at 1st. Jeter moves up to 2nd.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Mark writing a Tex message saying "I just popped out". /John Sterling'd/

    ReplyDelete
  67. AFraud actually comes through, singles home Jeter.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Twins going to Liriano, 5-13 record, 5.80 ERA.

God, I feel real confident he can get out of this mess.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The Twins starting pitcher looks like he's ready to cry in the dugout.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Matsui launches one deep into the night. 6-2 Yankees.

    ReplyDelete
  71. JFein, I don't know I flipped over to see what my other channel surfing options are, WASH/ND football replay, WNBA Finals.

I may have to go surfing now. Matsui, a two-run jack. 6-2.

    ReplyDelete
  72. "The Twins starting pitcher looks like he's ready to cry in the dugout."

I'm crying and I'm not even a Twins fan. /sarcasm/

    I'm rooting against the Yankees

    ReplyDelete
  73. Posada called out on strikes. Inning over, 6-2 Yanks after 5.

"This is not good folks"- Duane Kuiper

    ReplyDelete
  74. Lined to short, 1 out.

Chip, Jeter was in perfect position because it was it hit right at him.

    ReplyDelete
  75. That's a really quiet Top of the 6th for Minnesota.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Indiana Fever showing more comeback ability than Twins in WNBA Finals. Phoenix lead cut from 13 to 4, 43-39.

Yes, I'm giving a WNBA update during an MLB thread. I DON'T CARE!?

Great barehand, diving throw by Punto, web gem.

    ReplyDelete
  77. End of 6th, show some guts Minnesota.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Tolbert hit-by-pitch w/ 1 out. Tigers screaming why they didn't that call last night.

    ReplyDelete
  79. "Big poppers for Minnesota working here." - Chip Caray

    Huh?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Ground ball kicked by Sabathia. It's up, It's good. 1st and 2nd for the Twins.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Maybe Chip is thinking of Pop bands, god forbid.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wild pitch, 2nd and 3rd. Posada is awful as a defensive catcher.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Unproductive shallow flyout to Swisher, 2 out. Sabathia leave while TBs is in replay. As much as Fox sucks, they would stay live and show the replay coming back.

Yes, I know everything about TV. I should produce/direct these games.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Great at-bat by Cabrera. Hopefully, he can finish it off.

    DAMNITTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Foster's Language of The Game, I thought it was me reacting to Cabrera's strikeout.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Jeter singles, cue Caray/Darling lovefest.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Dear MLB,

Your great attendance figures are because the big market sell out their home games and many of their idiot bandwagon fans invade other team's home parks on the road.

    Sincerely,
    Me

    ReplyDelete
  88. Twins go around the horn for the DP, 2 out.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Chip, AFraud has always driven the ball w/ authority except when he's not on steroids and in the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 7-2 Yankees. Snore. Bring on the Cardinals-Dodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Red Sox announcer Don Orsillo calling the Red Sox/Angels series...That's sounds like fun.

And nice job ESPN Radio sending Jon Miller to cover the Yankees series and Shulman/Campbell to cover the Red Sox/Angels series.

Their OBSESSION never ends it. If a lightning bolt struck their satellite dish, I wouldn't ask for another thing as a sports fan.

    ReplyDelete
  92. We head to the 8th inning- Chip

    I head to the lavatory.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'm finally done. Now I'm going to get something to eat before the Cards-Dodgers game.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Back for the Top of the 8th w/ Joba coming in.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Cardinals-Dodgers will be moved to TNT to start until this game is finished.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Cards/Dodgers will start on TNT at about 9:30. Easy force to end the threat.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Jfein, TM?

On another note, the last 4 innings of the Phillies game and this Yankee/Twins game are very, very long.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Dick Stockton does not look right with a light blue tie like that.

    ReplyDelete
  99. It's Senile Stockton and Bewildered Brenly on Cards/Dodgers.

    That was cold, I know.

Stockton was very good at one time and works alot more than Joe Buck whose probably half his age.

Brenly is just there, nothing controversial. Thank god.

    ReplyDelete
  100. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Rivera has 1 out in the 9th in Bronx.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Bases loaded for Matt Holliday.

    ReplyDelete
  103. 2 outs in New York while bases loaded in LA.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Decided to listen to Vin Scully on Dodgers Radio. Vin called Wolf's slow curve, a "soap bubble".

    ReplyDelete
  105. And Holliday strikesout.

    What? Holliday isn't aggressive, Brenley?

    ReplyDelete
  106. 2 on, 2 out for Twins then Cabrera grounds out. Yankees win.

    ReplyDelete
  107. How's this stat. Since 1909, Dodgers have 995 victories, Cardinals have 994 victories, with 16 ties.

    ReplyDelete
  108. LOL Ronnie Belyard.

Is it windy in LA too?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Hahaha....Dodgers drop the pop out and the Cardinals score while the bases remain loaded.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Bloop single in the Bermuda triangle.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Whoa. How did the Cards not score more than 1 run?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Even thought it's the Dodgers, that was a sweat double play.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Double play gets the Dodgers out of the inning.

    ReplyDelete
  114. JFein, Cards inherited the Tigers/Rockies inability to hit w/ runners on base.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Kemp launches one! Dodgers lead it 2-1!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Furcal singles, Kemp homers. That's an answer.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Give Lincecum the Cy Young. He doesn't give up that homer.

BTW, it's that time of year again for a Tony LaRusa team to choke in the playoffs.

/I find LaRusa to be terribly overrated as a manager

    ReplyDelete
  118. Crap, the Dodgers feed went to Tom Looney doing an update.

    "This is not good folks"

    ReplyDelete
  119. What's happening to Chris Carpenter?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Carpenter gets out of trouble. I think I going to turn in for the night. I'm already getting dreary-eyed in the first inning.

    ReplyDelete
  121. "I'm not quite sure if he knew where he hit that ball, he just knew he hit it hard." - Bob Brenly

    ReplyDelete
  122. 2 on and 1 out for the Dodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'm switching back-and-forth between this game and the Kings game. Former Nova player Donte Cunningham is playing right now for Portland.

    ReplyDelete
  124. What a terrible error by De Rosa. 3-1 Dodgers

    ReplyDelete
  125. Schumaker with a double pulls the Cards within 1.

    ReplyDelete
  126. And Skipper knocks a run in. 3-2 Cardinals.

    ReplyDelete
  127. @JFein, I thought you went to bed like Al.

    ReplyDelete
  128. "Our first official beach ball on the field." - Bob Brenly as a beach ball managed to find it's way on the field.

    ReplyDelete
  129. @ 49er16: Nope, I'm awake, just doing some schoolwork with the game on in the background.

    ReplyDelete
  130. so, how terrible has Stockton/Brenly been?

    ReplyDelete
  131. @kt, I'm actually listening to the Kings game on the radio while the TV is on mute. So I can't say how bad Stockton/Brenly have been.

    ReplyDelete
  132. @49er16, will the Kings be any good this year?

also, i've been watching for 2 minutes and all ready i'm annoyed by the audio problems...

    ReplyDelete
  133. @kt, they probably won't make the playoffs, but they should at least be better than they were last year.

    ReplyDelete
  134. "It is three to one, three to two in favor of the Dodgers." - Dick Stockton

    The man is senile.

    ReplyDelete
  135. @ kt1000: I've only had it on in the background, but from what I've heard of it, it's been pretty bad.

Brian Anderson > Chip Caray > Dick Stockton

    /Not saying much.

    ReplyDelete
  136. "Ethier safe on the infield hit...really an outfield hit." - Dick Stockton confusing himself and all of America.

    ReplyDelete
  137. @JFein, just add those quotes to the thread yourself. I can't keep up anymore.

Stupid of Bowa to hold Either. But what do I know, I'm not a baseball genius like Bowa alledgedly is.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Orsillo is the best of the TBS announcers, too bad they stuck him with Buck Martinez(the most annoying voice in broadcasting).

and I'm shocked the Dodgers are knocking Carpenter around like this...

    ReplyDelete
  139. Wow. Each team has left 9 men on base and we are only through 4 innings.

    ReplyDelete
  140. @kt, I'm not. They can knock around any pitcher if they want to. I saw the Dodgers get to Lincecum a couple of times.

BTW, Carpenter did get out of the jam.

    ReplyDelete
  141. How long this game is taking, it might not be over until Midnight!

    ReplyDelete
  142. that was an awfully weird angle to take for a fly out to right field

    ReplyDelete
  143. @Keith good to know..i don't really pay close attention to the NL during the season....

    ReplyDelete
  144. "I'm not sure if they're lion tames out there with those chairs or if they're trying to get away from foul balls" Stockton

    ReplyDelete
  145. "That has to rank up as one of the most exciting post season games in all of baseball." - Dick Stockton talking about last night's regular season game between the Tigers and the Twins.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Pull him now, Tony!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but La Russa is no baseball genius the way people make him out to be. Carpenter has walked two straight people with no outs. It's time for him to take a walk.

    ReplyDelete
  147. you have to ride your ace as long as possible, Keith

    ReplyDelete
  148. "What a job Carpenter has done tonight. He has toiled and then some, really earning his salary and then some." Stockton apparently forgetting that Carpenter isn't pitching like a Cy Young award winner

    ReplyDelete
  149. stories like that girl and the Ryan Howard HR ball really bug me...

    @JFein Time Warner synergy baby!

    ReplyDelete
  150. Not that I've ever really been around consistently, but I'll be back in like 30-45 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  151. i hope you're off "hanging out" with a girl JFein

    ReplyDelete
  152. You can run the thread tomorrow, JFein ;-)

This is too much for me.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Russel Martin can put this game away right here...

    ReplyDelete
  154. Martin HBP! Either makes it 5-2 LA!

    ReplyDelete
  155. How do you hit Martin with the bases loaded?

    ReplyDelete
  156. @kt, because it's Midnight where you are!

BTW, if this game doesn't end, which it won't, by 10 I'm going to bed. I have to be at work by 5:30 tomorrow mourning.

    ReplyDelete
  157. @Keith... that is the sensible move, my friend

    ReplyDelete
  158. Thome K's...the Cards are still alive

    ReplyDelete
  159. the Cardinals have the tie run at the plate and 2 out...
