Ah, conference tournament week. One of the best weeks of the year. Tomorrow you can watch a Big East game at 9 in the mourning on the West Coast. What's better than watching college basketball in the mourning? JFein and myself will cover all the action with either live blogs or open threads. Today teams from the West Coast Conference, Colonial, Metro Atlantic, and Southern Conference punch their ticket to the tournament. This is a good day to check out teams that could pull upsets in the NCAA Tournament.
Announcing schedule courtesy of The 506
Colonial Championship: Old Dominion v. Virginia Commonwealth, 7:00 - ESPN: Mike Patrick, Len Elmore
Metro Atlantic Championship: Siena v. Rider, 7:00 - ESPN2: Bob Wischusen, Tim Welsh
West Coast Championship: Gonzaga v. St. Mary's, 9:00 - ESPN: Terry Gannon, Stephen Bardo
Southern Championship: Wofford v. Appalachian State, 9:00 - ESPN2: Carter Blackburn, Mark Gottfried
Am I the only one that noticed that Mike Patrick also got a college basketball demotion? Last year he called the ACC Championship game, this year, he is just doing a few games while Dan Shulman calls the ACC Title game and apparently he also gets to call the Colonial Championship.
ReplyDeleteI guess broadcasting a game and going at yourself over North Carolina basketball teams was just too difficult to do at the same time, so he told ESPN he would just do the latter in his own home.
You know why I didn't notice Patrick calling top basketball games? Because he sucked.
ReplyDelete@ Keith: You think St. Mary's has a chance tonight?
ReplyDelete@JFein: Simple answer, No. They haven't beaten the Zags once this year, plus the Zags raise their game up anytime they face Saint Mary's. I do believe though the Gaels will make the tournament because of how weak the field is this year.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I'm watching the Siena-Fairfield game. I want to see if Siena will be any good in the tournament. Remember last year's game with them against Louisville?
"There are only three people who don't like Cinderella; her step-mother and her two step-sisters." - Mike Patrick
ReplyDelete@ Keith: That was a good game last year.
ReplyDeleteThat was one of the first games, we live blogged together. We're trying to get used to the CiL system.
ReplyDeleteMike Patrick talking about beautiful strokes scares me greatly.
ReplyDelete"Fairfield showing a little toughness at the rack." - Tim Welsh
ReplyDeleteMinor typo, but you have Rider have the team facing Siena when really it is Fairfield.
I hope Siena comes back. I want to see them in the tournament.
ReplyDeleteI want to see William & Mary win as well. It would be neat to see a team in the tournament for the first time. Plus it will get another mid-major in as ODU is likely in even with a loss.
ReplyDelete@Keith remember the Siena/Ohio State upset? one of Bill Raftery's finest calls...
ReplyDelete"OHHH ONIONS! DOUBLE ORDER!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPUbmgkCnXU
@JFein Supposedly Patrick has been bumped from calling the women's Final Four as well. I think he's getting the Ron Franklin treatment.
ReplyDeleteWhy is ESPN staying with an injury in the UConn women's game as opposed to showing us the end of the W&M-ODU half?
ReplyDeleteThat's what I will remember the most from last year's tournament. The Nova buzzer beater and Raft and Verne calling the Siena game.
ReplyDelete@JFein: So I'm putting up an open thread tomorrow for the Big East games, right?
ReplyDeleteHot Tub Time Machine = Observe and Report of last year
ReplyDelete@ Keith: Yeah, go ahead. I won't be around in the afternoon, though.
ReplyDeleteNo live blot though. I'll start that on Wednesday.
*live blog.
ReplyDeleteAnd how did the comment count drop from 20 to 18? One of our "friends" show up?
Ben Roethlisberger showed up. And Siena is within 5.
ReplyDeleteBen Roethlisberger showed up
ReplyDeleteI take it this is one of those things I'm better off not knowing about.
Ronald Moore broke Ohio State's heart last year and this year he may have broke Fairfield's heart.
ReplyDeleteToo bad Wischusen is calling this game. It should be Raft.
ReplyDeleteThrilling stuff in Albany.
ReplyDeleteOT in Albany.
ReplyDelete@ Keith: Wischusen is not awful though. Besides, he holds a special place in my heart for calling the first Philadelphia league championship I ever saw live.
ReplyDelete/Philadelphia Soul in the Arena Bowl'd
OVERTIME!
ReplyDeleteOld Dominion is going dancing!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTHE EAGLES TRADED REGGIE BROWN TO TAMPA FOR A 6TH ROUND DRAFT PICK IN 2011!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!! YES!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSiena is going dancing. Now on to watch the Gaels lose to the Zags.
ReplyDeleteSIENA'S DANCING AGAIN!
ReplyDeleteWill we have "TRIPLE ONIONS" this year?
If only kt were not at a bar, I can chat with him about the Caps being PWN3D by Turco.
ReplyDelete/I get Versus at home'd
For whatever reason, Saint Mary's always implodes against the Zags.
ReplyDeleteMarty Turco has been amazing.
ReplyDeleteDallas can win it with this next shot in the shootout.
ReplyDeleteIf they do, I think Beninati will cry.
He missed. Beninati is happy.
Laich missed.
ReplyDeleteAnother chance for Dallas.
And Robeiro misses. Beninati will live to see a few more seconds. This is the longest home ice win streak in some time on the line year. Beninati's life hangs in the balance as we speak.
And Turco makes another save. Sheesh.
ERIKKSON WINS IT FOR DALLAS!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou could hear the anger in his voice as he tried to be impartial in his constipated sounding scream for the Erikkson goal.
I turn off the St. Mary's game for practically 10 minutes yet I don't think St. Mary's point title has gone up at all.
ReplyDeleteOmar Samham of Saint Mary's is the West Coast version of Vasquez. He just gets under people's skin.
ReplyDelete@JFein I don't know what is up with Varlamov. Dude hasn't been right since he came back from his injury. A pee-wee goalie could have stopped Dallas' 3rd goal.
ReplyDeleteSamhan! And 1! Gaels up 11
ReplyDeleteMcconnell! with the 3-ball
ReplyDelete@Keith i completely agree with your point about Samhan.
ReplyDeleteCome on Gaels. Punch your ticket. Give me somebody to root for.
ReplyDeleteMcConnell isn't as flashy as Patty Mills, but he's probably more effective running the point with his passing.
ReplyDelete18-point lead for the Gaels! I'm so proud of this team.
ReplyDeleteThe Gaels are just taking it to Gonzaga. I can't remember the last time I've seen a Zags team this manhandled.
ReplyDelete@Kris: This was a long time coming for Saint Mary's. They needed to get this Zags monkey off their back.
ReplyDeleteand App State is back within 6 in the SoCon final
ReplyDeleteIt's over! The Zags concede the game to the Gaels. Saint Mary's will go Dancing! I couldn't be happier for Randy Bennett and Saint Mary's.
ReplyDeleteAlright Saint Mary's! Their going dancing!
ReplyDeleteSt. Mary's will make some BCS conf. team very miserable next week...
ReplyDeleteApp can make this a 1-possession game with these FT's
ReplyDelete@JFein: I'm glad we didn't live blog that game. I think we jinx the Gaels last year ;-)
ReplyDeletei think Wofford just reenacted the Kobe Bryant forearm shiver to Mike Bibby inbounds play...
ReplyDeleteHorrible on both ends.
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about App St-Wofford, but am I wrong in saying that the winner of this will be one of our 16 seeds?
@JFein Wofford did beat Georgia and South Carolina...they could be a 14 or 15
ReplyDeleteThat turnover seals it. Congrats to the Terriers and the Gaels.
ReplyDelete@JFein you mean Wofford
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteFor the first time ever, Wofford is going to the NCAA Tournament!!!!!
ReplyDelete@ kt: I got the two confused for a second, lol.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Wofford. Goodnight everyone. I'll have an open thread up tomorrow for the games starting at 12et/ 9pt. JFein will start the live blogs on Wednesday.
