College Football Open Thread: January 2 Bowls And Ron Franklin's Last College Football Game

Posted by JFein because 49er16 has an appointment with the Geek Squad over his keyboard.

The Big 10 had itself a banner day yesterday with the only loss being Northwestern to Auburn in overtime. Can Michigan State continue that momentum or will the firing of Mike Leach bring the Red Raiders closer together and allow them to remember the Alamo as a victory. Also, enjoy the Liberty Bowl today as it is the last college football game that Ron Franklin will ever call. (times are eastern)

International Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. South Florida 12:00 (ESPN2 - Mike Gleason and John Congemi, SR: David Amber) (JFein's pick: South Florida)

Cotton Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss 2:00 (Fox - Pat Summerall and Daryl Johnston, SR: Krista Voda) (JFein's pick: Ole Miss)

Papajohns.com Bowl: South Carolina vs. UConn 2:00 (ESPN - Dave Neal and Andre Ware, SR: Cara Capuano) (JFein's pick: UConn)

AutoZone Liberty Bowl: Arkansas vs. East Carolina 5:30 (ESPN - Ron Franklin and Ed Cunningham, SR: Jeannine Edwards) (JFein's pick: Arkansas)

Valero Alamo Bowl: Michigan State vs. Texas Tech 9:00 (ESPN - Mike Patrick and Bob Davie, SR: Heather Cox) (JFein's pick: originally Texas Tech, but following Leach's firing, it's been changed to Michigan State)

To get you ready for the games, here is a video of Lee Corso trying to shake hands with blind Jake Olson!

Awkwardly hilarious.

Enjoy the games, leave comments, and don't be a troll!

  1. Pat Summerall trying tocall the Cotton Bowl is sad.

  2. "Blitz by Oklahoma State." - Pat

    Oklahoma State is on offense.

  3. I refuese to mock Pat Summerall because I prefer to remember the great games he did with Madden in the 80's and 90's as I was growing up.

That said, Fox is doing Summerall no favors by continuing to let him announce the Cotton Bowl.

  4. Illinois/Gonzaga go to overtime. Is anybody here right now?

    ReplyDelete
  5. 83-80 Illinois w/ 1:57 left, Gonzaga ball. Zags lead by 21 before Illini came back.

  6. Gonzaga ball on the poss. arrow following the jump ball.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Matt Bouldin w/ the game-tying 3. /Spellchecked correctly

  8. Harris gives the Zags the lead. Illinois for 3 and the win...no good! Gonzaga wins.

  9. Other early college hoops scores...

Arizona beats UCLA 77-63 (UCLA is really bad), UAB beats Arkansas 73-72 on Howard Crawford's dunk w/ :01 left and Pittsburgh gets a big upset road win over previously undefeated Syracuse, 82-72

  10. Eric Bledsoe gets called for a 8 seconds in for UK and gets in a shouting match and is taken out.

Kentucky is fired up less than a minute in.

Technical foul on Lousville's Swopshire. Demarcus Cousins wrestled him to the ground.

    Scrappy start.

  11. Cousins got an unsportsmanlike technical, Clark Kellogg thought it should've been a flagrant and ejection.

Swopshire for UL and Cousins for UK w/ the techs.

Cousins w/ the first 2 baskets, 6-0UK. Wild game.

  12. Villanova has not exactly opened Big East play with what I would call a rousing start....

  13. I went to geek squad today and they said it could take 2-6 weeks o fix my computer. I'm going to take it back to them on Monday.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That's not good. I feel your pain. I can't play any video or audio files on my computer still. I can't even download anything from the Web.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Clark now flip-flopping saying he's glad the refs kept Cousins in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @ 49er16: Wow that sucks. So I guess you won't be around for many live blogs during the next few weeks...:-(

    ReplyDelete
  17. @JFein: no i will be around. i will borrow my parents laptop on Monday.

  18. 15-3 UK now, Louisville can't get a field goal (0-12) or a call to go their way. Refs not callingg anything on the Wildcats

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm really starting to hate UK under Calipari, for their on-court roughhouse play.

    @Keith

that absolutely sucks about your comp

  21. @kt1000

I see the light! I also see the Caps are playing the L.A. Kings on Comcast. Forget the Tony Greene weekly screwjob.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nova leads 35-34 at halftime after a rough start.

Amazingly enough, Eric Collins is out of the hospital and in Milwaukee doing play-by-play for this game

    ReplyDelete
  23. You know what really sucks about Keith's computer? That there wasn't a 500 word rant on the screw job the Kings took last night in LA.

@Al i'm just saying. i would Karl Hess to that list. He worked the Pitt/Syracuse game and lets just say it was shaky. I'm not watching hockey today. I'm not really in the mood for Joe Beninati.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Semin takes a dumb penalty, what else is new?! /sarcasm'd

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Kris: I'd rather forget about that game.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @kt I swear golf is the only sport where you can say the officials don't screw people. The players (golfers) call penalties on themselves.

I just realized I'm defending golf, maybe my flu isn't completely gone like I thought.

    ReplyDelete
  27. ok st just pulled a Tebow and scored on a jump pass.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Keith i really can't blame you for feeling that way.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Any predictions for tonight's Alamo Bowl of Shame?

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Al be careful. you might be humming The Masters theme song before too long.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The thing about the Alamo Bowl is the fact Sparty has several players suspended for the game. I still like TT.

    ReplyDelete
  32. JFein, your thoughts on the Alamo Bowl?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ovechkin hooks Doughty (he did grab Alex's stick but...) down. Joe B and Locker bitching about it. Before that happened, they also thought Mike Green should have been the last defenseman chosen by Team Caana over Doughty.

Can I get Bob Miller and Jim Fox please?!

    ReplyDelete
  34. @kt A tradition unlike any other, Jim Nantz slobbering over the Masters. /Fixed Cliche'd

    ReplyDelete
  35. Another OK ST touchdown.

    14-7 OK ST

    ReplyDelete
  36. And +1 to Tim Brando and Seth Davis on At The Half saying Cousins should've been thrown out.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @49er16: What are your New Year's resolutions for the year?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't do New Year's resolutions.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm sure JFein does though.........

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ok. State TD called back and they don't score on 3rd and goal from the 1.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ryan Smyth scores on LA's 3rd power play of the period. 1-0 Kings. Thank you, John Erskine.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Delk and Swopshire with 3-pointers, cutting UK's lead to 33-29.

Take those away Tony Greene, I dare you!

    ReplyDelete
  43. @ N.B: I posted my thoughts in the post, but Michigan State will win a game that I think you'll be better off missing.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Zac Robinson raises Jevon Snead idiotic INT for idiotic INT. Ole Miss inside the Ok. State 25.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @JFein: do you do New Year's Resolutions?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Don't expect Adam James to get any receptions in the Alamo Bowl.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @ JFein: I don't. Do you?

    ReplyDelete
  48. @JFein

I know about physical receptions, how about vocal receptions?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Summerall: Yes sir, as the FG is no good.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes, I do have a New Year's resolution, but it is something that I prefer not to share here, if you don't mind.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ole Miss gets inside the 5, Snead then gets sacked twice, and the kicker misses the FG. The Cotton Bowl is going to be lost more than won. Pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  52. *Cough, Cough* Replay in the Cotton Bowl

    ReplyDelete
  53. Think AT&T will cut its sponsorship with Cotton Bowl like it did with Tiger?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Can we stop ripping Pat Summerall for every little mistake? Yes, he's over the hill but it's one game ( a meaningless bowl game), and only one a year.

Same thing with JFein and Mookie/SS Reporters posting Lee Corso trying t shake blind Jake Olson's hand. If Lee tells Chris Fowler to delicately take Jake's hand and hold out his own hand it's a non-issue. Lee was trying to be a good guy, he did something odd but not evil.

This is the same thing that happened to Awful Announcing where people ripped anything an announcer said or did no matter the reason. I understand being pissed at Thom Brenneman's ( also Verne and Gary) mancrush for Tebow, NBC's overobsession of Sidney Crosby, Fox with the Cowboys and Red Sox/Yankees, CBS with the Pats, and ESPN with mostly anything they own or east-coast (except the Lakers).

This is ridiculous. I rip people too but understand it's a hard job and you're only bad if you annoy people by either being completely stupid and/or arrogant.

    ReplyDelete
  55. He was trying to do a good thing, but it just produced an awkwardly hilarious moment of television.

Besides, I'm pretty sure Lee Corso is crazy anyway...

    ReplyDelete
  56. AND-1 FOR THE WILDCATS WITH 18.1 TO GO UP BY 1!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. MISSED IT! REBOUND MARQUETTE!!! THE SHOT IS BLOCKED!!! NOVA RECOVERS AND IS FOULED WITH 3.3 TO GO!

    First freebie is good.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Redding misses the 2nd. Timeout Marquette with 2.6 to go.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ed Cunningham isn't bad himself.

    ReplyDelete
  60. @ Pete in Maine: So basically what you are saying that because I have not proven myself to be better on the same stage that I and all of America not in the broadcasting industry are not allowed to have our opinions about and criticize certain broadcasters.

This is America where there is freedom of speech, jackass. If you want to live in a society where people are not allowed to have opinions, may I suggest you move to North Korea?

@ 49er16: I forget if you at the live blog last week or not, but "Pete in Maine" is a troll. Delete his comments now.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm pretty sure the Cotton Bowl will go down as one of the more boring bowl games this year....

    ReplyDelete
  62. And that is saying a lot, Justin.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ron Franklin's college football career is going to overtime.

    ReplyDelete
  64. East Carolina has now missed 2 field goals in the last minute of the game and one in overtime. Yes, I'm talking about the East Carolina football team playing in the Liberty Bowl.

    ReplyDelete
  65. My advice of Michigan State over Temple sure is looking like a good one right now. Oh, wait.....

    ReplyDelete
  66. Texas Tech leads and is playing well.

Is it just me or does Mike Patrick seem more alive working with Davie than he ever has with James?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Tech trying to rally..down 31-27 with 7:30 to go

    ReplyDelete
  68. This is a much better football game than I ever thought it would be.

    ReplyDelete
  69. wow. Alabama has never beaten Texas...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Texas Tech got another 1st down on 4th and 4...and I didn't agree with that call at all, but they made it

    ReplyDelete
  71. Touchdown. Texas Tech. Ballgame

    ReplyDelete
  72. congrats to Texas Tech winning a game almost no one thought they would
