Must List: Week 2

I always love how college football scheduling works. You receive some great games (TCU-LSU, Clemson-Georgia) the first week of the season then you get to the 2nd week of the season and the schedule is crap. I mean you have to look at these games for this week. I mean yikes! The best game is Michigan-Notre Dame. Woof. You'd be better off skipping the college football schedule this week and prepare for the opening Sunday of the NFL instead.

I still have to preview some of these games so I'll try to pick through some of the best games of the weekend.

Thursday, Sept 5th
Sacramento State at Arizona State.....................HAHAHAHA just kidding. I'm a Sacramento State grad and I'm not even going to watch this game over Denver vs Baltimore.

Saturday, Sept 7th
Florida at Miami, Noon (ESPN: Dave Pasch, Brian Griese, Tom Luginbill) This game was supposed to be played a few years ago but Florida has been trying to get out of it. And now here we are. Florida has to travel to Miami to most likely collect a victory. I'll be rooting for the U in this game because Florida is the worst.

Cincinnati at Illinois, Noon (ESPN2: Bob Wischusen, Rod Gilmore, Quint Kessenich) Cincy was quite impressive last week against Purdue. Now they get another B1G pansy to beat up on. Illinois barely beat Southern Illinois last week which is better than losing to Eastern Washington, AMIRITE Oregon State?

Assumption at Bryant, No Broadcast: the506 forum listed this game in the lineup for the week and I couldn't believe there was a college called "Assumption". Well there really is a college called Assumpiton! They have a website and everything.

Oregon at Virginia, 3:30 (ABC: Mike Patrick, Ed Cunningham, Jeannine Edwards) Virginia didn't look that bad last week against BYU but the Cougars offense is like an old beater car you hope doesn't break down compared to Oregon's Ferrari. If Oregon doesn't win this game by at least 20 points I'll be shocked.

San Diego State at Ohio State, 3:30 (ABC: Sean McDonough, Chris Spielman, Shannon Spake) San Diego State was another victim to the FCS curse last week losing to Eastern Illinois (what's with the Midwest and directional schools?). I want to see Urban Meyer go full on Lane Kiffin dickmode going for two after every touchdown this week.

Utah State at Air Force, 3:30 (CBS Sports Net: Dave Ryan, Adam Archuleta, Evan Washburn) Watch this game for Chuckie Keeton of Utah State. He's incredible to watch. If he doesn't get hobbled last week against Utah and the Aggies win that game. He was by far and away the best player on the field that night in SLC.

South Carolina at Georgia, 4:30 (ESPN: Brad Nessler, Todd Blackledge, Holly Rowe) This game lost it's allure as soon as Georgia lost to Clemson. While it still should be a good game it's just not as sexy as it was last week. Also can you imagine the reaction if Georgia losses on Saturday? Mark Richt might not be able to go outside in fear of being assassinated by a crazed Bulldogs fan.

Navy at Indiana, 6:00 (B1G Net: Eric Collins, Jon Jansen, Antwaan Randle El) I'm excited to see what Navy looks like this season. They struggled last year. This season their schedule is a little easier. Indiana meanwhile looked really good versus Indiana State last week. Let's see if Kevin Wilson can get some sort of consistency this season.

Texas at BYU, 7:00 (ESPN2: Joe Tessitore, Matt Millen, Maria Taylor) Here's a question I have to ask. Has it been really worth it for BYU to become an independent? I'm sure it's been worth it from a financial standpoint but have you seen their schedule? At least in the Mountain West they would get a break by playing Wyoming or New Mexico. They don't get that as an independent. I just don't see how BYU will ever be relevant as an independent when they have to play Texas and Wisconsin every year.

Notre Dame at Michigan, 8:00 (ABC: Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit, Heather Cox) This game leave me cold. I don't know how to feel about either team. They both played soft schools last week at home. I have no idea how this game will go or who will win but I'm sure it will say more about the team that wins this game.

Washington State at USC, 10:30 (FS1: Craig Bolerjack, Joey Harrington, Ryan Nece) Oh God I'm salivating at the thought of USC losing this game. Both of their QB's looked alright against a pathetic Hawaii team while Wazzu looked really good last week in a loss to Auburn. Now watch USC stomp Wazzu because you can't kill Kiffin. He's like a cockroach.

San Jose State at Stanford, 11:00 (P12Network: Ted Robinson, Glenn Parker, Drea Avent) This game is fascinating if you can find the Pac-12 Network on your dial. San Jose State isn't the push over they have been in the past. Stanford is trying to prove they can win a national championship. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a 13-10 slogfest.

Recipe of the Week, Slow Cooked BBQ Brisket: Slow cooked BBQ brisket is really the last frontier for myself in the BBQ department. It's something I've tried before, pulled the brisket off the grill too soon, and had to throw most of it away. You have to be patient with brisket. You need to carve out some time on a weekend to do it because it takes forever to cook. This is something I need to do in the near future.

Alcoholic Beverage of the Week, Hello My Name is Amber: My cousin sent me this beer that is brewed in Indianapolis. It's an English style amber meaning it's a little maltier than the American version. This beer leaves a great malt aftertaste that is almost too good.

  1. BYU fans in my neck of the woods don't want to admit this, but at some point down the road, they're going to have to join a conference again. The big problem with that is they burned a lot of bridges with the MWC when they went independent (which was largely an overreaction on their part when Utah got invited to the PAC) and unless the Big XII considers them, they might end up stuck there.

    1. I think they're shit out of luck myself. The WAC is extinct, the Mountain West and Conference USA are already bloated, they're stuck as an independent. They need to figure out a way to balance their schedule a little more for they're not traveling to Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin in the same year or try to get into the Big 12.

    2. BYU could never see the forest through the trees. The Pac-12 doesn't want two kinds of schools. They don't want non-research schools (that leaves out Boise State) and they've never wanted schools affiliated with a religion (that leaves out BYU and even Notre Dame).

But because BYU was such in a hurry to get out of the MWC and because they didn't want to be left behind of Utah, they went independent which was stupid before it even happened. Now they're stuck as independents because all the conferences are booked up except the Big 12. And I doubt the main schools of the Big 12 want to travel to both West Virginia and Utah. They're stuck.

    3. Colonel pretty much nails it. Texas & OU in particular would cringe if they were assured of at least one long road trip to either Provo or Morgantown every single season.

    4. This situation also shows how bloated the conference system has become and it became bloated because of the BCS which is going away after this season. Perfect.
