Future Brian Sabean Players

I have to start off by saying San Francisco Giants GM Brian Sabean is a great GM at identifying which pitchers in the minor leagues will become good pitchers and which pitchers he can trade*. Sabean is good at identifying players to pick up off the scrap heap like Pat Burrell. Brian Sabean though is not a good GM at identifying to sign as a free agent.

*Example of minor league pitchers the Giants have traded over the years who haven't done anything: Kurt Ainsworth, David Aardsma, Tim Alderson, Jason Grilli, and even Ryan Vogelsong.

There hasn't been a year that I can remember that Giants fans didn't become angry at Sabean for someone he has signed. And why shouldn't we? He signed Aaron freaking Rowand to a 5-year $60 million dollar contract. That's all you need to know.

When Sabean pursues free agents, he basically goes after the same person. A player who hits .300 but doesn't take a walk and his OBP is pretty mediocre. When the Giants signed Ryan Theriot during the offseason I said to myself, "That's a Sabean player!" Sabean is just a caricature at this point to everyone with the players he signs.

Sabean also likes signing veteran players who are either past their prime or past-being-past-their-prime. This has also become a Sabean caricature at this point. I can't count how many aging veterans Sabean has signed over the years who finished their careers with the Giants. It's a big joke at this point.

So without further ado, here are a list of players I wouldn't be surprised if they become Giants with Sabean still as our GM:

Jeff Francoeur: If Francoeur didn't sign an extension with the Royals during last season, Sabean probably would have traded Jonathon Sanchez for him instead of Melky Cabrera. I won't be surprised though if Frenchy becomes a Giants after his contract runs out with the Royals in a couple of years. Just look at his career OBP! He's destined for the Giants.

Yuniesky Betancourt: The Giants needed a SS this offseason and Yuni was a free agent. The Giants-Yuni pairing seemed destined. The Giants screwed up though and decided to stick with Brandon Crawford at SS which is shocking in itself because Sabean loves him some washed up veterans playing at SS. Yuni isn't washed up but once again he's a low OBP player.

Rick Ankiel: In the one game the Braves beat the Giants during the 2010 NLDS, Ankiel hit a home run. Surprisingly Sabean didn't sign Ankiel that following offseason. Ankiel's OBP has declined over the years which makes him a perfect candidate to receive a contract from the Giants.

Hairston Brothers: Sabean also loves signing players who just kill the Giants. Steve Finley always comes to mind when I think of this. Of course Finley was signed by the Giants when he was past-being-past-his-prime. That's why one of the Hairston brothers are destined to become Giants one day. The Hairston's kill the Giants. Most Giants fans have nightmares about the Hairstons. Hell I've woken up in a cold sweat thinking about the Hairstons. You just wait, one of the Hairstons will become a Giant.

I know I'm missing some players, so who'll will eventually become a typical Brian Sabean signing?

  1. Giants will eventually sign Sabathia and Jimmy Rollins after they're past their prime. They love bringing in local players.
