Foul Ball: Great Starting Pitching, Awful Bullpens

Philadelphia 1, Pittsburgh 0: Halladay gonna Halladay but I did not expect him to have to fight for a victory, especially since the opposing pitcher was Erik Bedard. Seriously, Erik Bedard pitched a dual against Halladay and only lost because Carlos Ruiz hit a sac fly in the seventh inning. Halladay gave up two Pirates hits in the first inning and then no-hit them the rest of the game. Jonathon Papelbon saved his first game in a Phillies uniform.

Toronto 7, Cleveland 4, 16 innings: Poor Justin Masterson. He pitches great, gets an unlikey run support from Jack Hannahan, then watches Chris Perez blow the save and then watched Cleveland lose in extra innings. Benches cleared in the 15th inning when Shin-Soo Choo was almost drilled in the head by a fastball. This was after both teams had been given a warning during the game. J.P. Arencibia's home run in the 16th inning gave the Blue Jays the victory. This game also broke the record for the longest opening day game ever.

Rick Manning Quote Fail: Indiana analyst Rick Manning had this brilliant piece of analysis after Choo was almost hit in the head, "Perez didn't do it intentionally, but it was at his coconut, man."

Atlanta 0, New York 1: Johan Santana was pretty much brilliant in his first start since 2010 going five innings, giving up two walks and hits, and striking out five. The Mets offense couldn't get him a run though so he got the no-decision. David Wright drove in the only run of the game in the sixth inning and former Giants pitcher Ramon Ramirez picked up the victory for the Metropolitans.

Washington 2, Chicago 1: There's an old urban myth that pitchers at the beginning of the year are more prepared for the start of the season than the hitters. This myth was true for the case in the Washington-Chicago game as both Stephen Strasburg and Ryan Dempster pitched brilliantly and both picked up the no decisions. Kerry Wood blew the save and Carlos Marmol blew the game as the Natinals scored their only two runs of the game in the 8th and 9th inning of the game. (Video via Big League Stew)

Boston 2, Detroit 3: Another game that featured great starting pitching and crappy bullpen help. Verlander pitched a gem and Jose Valverde threw the gem into the Atlantic Ocean like that old broad in Titanic (Hip reference!). And then the Red Sox bullpen blew the save and the game in the ninth inning. Both teams bullpens would like to forget this game.

Florida Miami 0, Cincinnati 4: Hell of a debut for the new look Florida....er...........Puerto Rico....er......Miami Marlins. They have scored a grand total of one run in two games to start the year. How very San Francisco Giants of them. When asked for a comment after the game, Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen only had this to say. (Okay I made that last part up.)

Los Angeles Dodgers 5, San Diego 3: Presented without comment are two comments Vin Scully made during this game, "He had that big Alonzo coming at him, and if they collide, Loney's Yonder." and "Before the game Kershaw was upchucking, had diarrhea, you name it!"
