Just a few moments ago Owen Nolan retired from the NHL as a San Jose Shark. Now I can't speak for every Sharks fan, but Owen Nolan is the reason why I started watching hockey in the first place.
Jamie Baker might have scored the most important goal in Sharks history, Owen Nolan in my opinion was the most important player. Nolan was the first player that I can remember on the Sharks who consistently helped the Sharks make the playoffs and earn a spot on the All-Star team. In essence he made the Sharks relevant in the hockey world.
I'll also remember Nolan for being one of the rare players who could score but also fight and deliver crushing hits. My favorite Nolan moment happened in the playoffs against the Dallas Stars. Nolan didn't even try to avoid Stars goalie Ed Belfour and bodychecked him against the boards sparking a melee.
So long sweet prince Owen. Your crushing hits and scoring will be missed. Now it's time for the Sharks to make your number the first retired number in their history.
Not a lot of players like Nolan around anymore. Guys who can fight and score.
