Improving the MLB Network

I love baseball but in all honesty I'm lukewarm on the MLB Network. I enjoy the MLB Network's in-season coverage of baseball games. I love how they'll show a afternoon game on their network and will cut into live games at night. It's their offseason programming and programming when games or their studio shows that needs to improve.

I'm sorry but I don't need to watch a million replays of "Top Ten 3rd Baseman Right Now". Or three different replays of Intentional Talk, Clubhouse Confidential, and Hot Stove every single night. I don't want to watch a gameshow either MLB Network.

So please put these suggestions to improve the MLB Network programming under consideration please.

Classic Games: Instead of airing a million replays of the same shows over and over again, why not air more classic games? And I'm not talking re-airing the top 20 series with Bob Costas which was great. I'm talking about watching classic games that have been edited to show in a 2-hour block. That's 2-hours of programming for one program right there.

And yes I admit that I'm a sucker for classic games. Anytime I see NFL Classic or Hardwood Classic on the menu I'll immediately check to see what game is being aired. The MLB Network needs to add more classic games to their programming. They own thousands, maybe millions of hours of baseball footage. Unlock the video vault and please start airing classic games MLB Network. You can even call it Diamond Classics.

More Documentary Programs: The MLB Network has done a few documentaries but they haven't scratched the surface yet of what they could do. I'm a sucker of documentaries and I know there are other people too who like them. The MLB Network needs to air more documentaries whether it's on past subjects or present subjects.

A America's Game Type of Series: I think all these sports specific networks should take a page out of the NFL Network's book and air an America's Game type of series on each of the championship teams. Now obviously the World Series history is a lot longer than the Super Bowl, but the MLB Network could go back the past 30 years and air documentaries on those Series' and teams. It would be nice to watch old players look back at their championship years. Who wouldn't watch the doc on the 84 Tigers? Right RJBO?

Scouting Show: Another NFL Network staple is their coaches show. I want to see a scouting show on the MLB Network. Take us inside the mind of the guys who scout college and high school players before the draft. Explain what they mean when they say "this guy has a high ceiling." Explain what they look for in a prospect. This would be a great program to run right before the June draft.

I hope these ideas work MLB Network. Please use them.

PS: Get rid of Mitch Williams and Dan Plesac while you're at it.

  1. Can't show classic games. Must re-air the Top 20 games a million times to make the network feel like they're getting their money's worth out of Costas.

  2. I like these ideas too. However, you are forgetting one CRUCIAL addition-by-subtraction. Get rid of the overload of Hawk Harrelson clips during the White Sox highlights.

  3. I love the classic games idea. I'd also like to see some great documentaries made about teams like the 2013 Gary RailCats. They barely made the playoffs finishing 9 games behind their division leader Fargo. After beating them in 4 games looked over matched against Wichita who had the best pitching, batting average, league MVP and 5 all stars (none on Gary). The league MVP had almost twice as many home runs as Gary's whole team. But Vlad Guerrero's cousin got hot at the right time. The league on base % leader became Championship MVP and an amazing series upset took place.
