Dear TNT,
My name is Keith Deaner. I'm a basketball fan who enjoys the NBA on TNT. I love everyone who is a part of the TNT broadcasts, except Reggie. I love Marv, Harlan, Kerr, The Czar, Chris Webber, Sager's suits, EJ, Jet, and Barkley.
I put up with Reggie because he's not the only person who stumbles over their own words while speaking or says stupid things. I'm can barely speak sometimes because I stumble over my words. It happens and I understand so I put up with Reggie even though he never sells Marv's jokes.
I even occasionally put up with Dick Stockton. He's not the only old fossil trying to stay relevant.
I'm through with Shaq though TNT, he needs to be pulled off the air immediately. Shaq has ruined one of the best studio shows on TV if not the very best. Charles, Kenny, and EJ have great chemistry together and when a Kevin McHale and Chris Webber were brought into the studio that chemistry wasn't ruined. It has been ruined with Shaq.
Shaq is a horrendous broadcaster. I'm not saying that either because I hate Shaq. When you guys announced Shaq would join your team I went with you guys with a clear head. I forgotten the times Shaq called the Kings "Queens" and other times he made fun of Sacramento. I put all that to the side and went into this experiment with a clear mind.
Oh sure I had my doubts. I wondered if an athlete as petty as Shaq could give actual analysis about players he dislikes. I also wondered if he would call Stan Van Gundy, "The Master of Panic" on air or call Chris Bosh "The RuPaul of Big Men" on air. Would he say anything nice about Kobe?
Here's a list of things TNT why Shaq isn't working on your set:
His Voice: I'm not talking about opinions but his actual voice. You need a good voice to be in broadcasting or at least one that stands out. Charles doesn't have a good voice but he distinguishes himself with his faulty grammar. Shaq's voice is too low to even hear him on TV. I have to turn up the volume just to hear him. That's not a good trait for TV.
He's Too Petty: Shaq is without a doubt the most petty athlete ever. Last night before the Magic game the TNT studio show was making fun of Shaq about his petty feud with Dwight Howard over who gets the Superman nickname. Instead of saying something witty to defend himself, Shaq basically sat on stage like a petty child who was told to share his toy. Pettiness isn't funny TNT, it's just sad and pathetic.
One thing I've always enjoyed about Inside the NBA is the fact the guys can make fun of themselves. EJ for his nerdiness, Kenny for riding Hakeem's coattails and Charles for his many faults. You might not like Barkley's opinions, but you have to admire someone who can make fun of his own faults. Shaq is incapable to make fun of himself and his pettiness. That's not a good trait and it ruins the chemistry for this show.
Shaq Hardly Speaks: It's kind of funny watching the studio show because EJ, Kenny, and Charles will start riffing with each other while Shaq sits on the other side of EJ saying nothing. Then EJ will stop Kenny and Charles and bring Shaq into the conversation. This isn't a good thing TNT. The flow and chemistry of the show is ruined if they have to stop everything and bring Shaq into the conversation.
And that's what I hate most about Shaq on the Inside the NBA show. He ruins the chemistry of the other three guys because he doesn't have the gumption to jump into the conversation with EJ, Kenny, and Charles. The entire shows flow has been ruined by Shaq.
So please TNT take Shaq off the air. He's just not made to be an analysis. I see you're trying to give Shaq some practice on NBATV but it isn't working. The NBATV guys have to also stop their conversations to bring Shaq in. Shaq just isn't a TV guy. He's fine giving his opinions in front of reporters but those opinions are mostly petty and petulant.
So please do everyone a favor TNT and pull Shaq off the air. Not every famous athlete is made for TV. Just ask NBC when they used Dr. J and Isiah Thomas.
Sincerely, Keith
