Then there's irrational hatred. For whatever reason you just hate a certain team even though they're not a rival to your favorite team and have no affect on your favorite teams outcome. Maybe you hate the history of that team. Or a former player. Or a coach. For whatever reason you hate a team that doesn't affect you. That's irrational hatred. Here's my list of irrational hatred teams.
St. Louis Cardinals- I have an irrational hatred of the Cardinals for a couple of reasons. First and foremost is Tony LaRussa. From LaRussa's my way or the highway attitude to his views on hunting (which caused the rift between him and Dusty Baker because Dusty liked to get out to hunt) everything about LaRussa screams holier than thou. And then there are Cardinals fans. St. Louis fans have always fancied themselves like Yankees fans. It's their God given right that their team should make the playoffs every single year.
Pittsburgh Steelers- I've always had an irrational hatred for the Steelers. I hate the fact that they have more Super Bowl victories than the 49ers. I hate that the 70's Steelers claimed the Raiders were a dirty team when the Steelers had just as dirty team as the Raiders. Then there's the current version of the Steelers who think everyone is against them. Enough. You guys have been to the Super Bowl 3 out of the last 7 years. I'm sure the NFL is against you guys.
Vancouver Canucks- The Sedins to Luongo to the fans.
Golden State Warriors- I've always considered the Lakers the Kings true rival than the Warriors. So the Warriors go in my irrational hatred category. I just hate the Warriors. I hate their homer broadcasters. I hate that the Warriors had one good year in twenty years and upset the Mavericks in the first round. Big whoop. The Warriors were a bad match up for the Mavs. That upset made since. Now the Warriors are back into irrelevance and their annoying fans couldn't be more annoying.
Florida Gators- I hate Florida because they haven't traveled out of state for a non-conference game in over twenty years. Other SEC teams will at least schedule one non-conference game out of state even if it's against a weaker opponent. Can't say that about the Florida Gators.
What are your irrational hatred teams?
I have the same feeling toward the Kings as you do about the Warriors. My thing is that I'm too pessimistic about the Warriors anymore to really be that over-the-top annoying.
ReplyDeleteBut to answer your question, here are mine:
--Denver, and it's every damn team there. Despise the Broncos, the Rockies are a bunch of Bush league bastards, still enjoy Sharks victories over the Avalanche, and the Nuggets based entirely on the city in which they play.
--Florida Marlins. Fly by night franchise that probably cost the Giants 2 World Series titles. Explain to me how they got a new stadium?
--Boise State. If you've ever lived in Boise like I have and you are a fan or alum of another school, it will give you a whole new perspective on them. It got to the point where I hated Boise State more than I hated BYU. I have a strong dislike for BYU, I hate Boise State.
--Kentucky, in basketball. Anyone who has followed the Utes in basketball over the years will tell you why Kentucky is so hated and it's mainly due to the fact that they have owned us in the tourney.
--New Mexico (also basketball). Hated Kenny Thomas, Royce Olney, Danny Granger, the fact that they could only win at The Pit. The smile on my face when Chris Hines beat the Lobos with a buzzer beater in the Utes final game ever at The Pit was a nice MWC parting gift.
I'll also mix in the LA Kings, the Utah Jazz, the Atlanta Braves of the 90s, and the New England Patriots.
Atlanta Braves- Yes they are a division rival of the Phillies, but they are quite possibly my least favorite team in sports. From Bobby Cox beating his wife and always arguing balls and strikes to the racist Tomahawk Chop to Chipper Jones's consistent whining to their terrible SB Nation blog (Talking Chop), no sports organization pisses me off as much as the Braves.
ReplyDeleteSan Francisco Giants- 2010 NLCS. Cody Ross. Enough said. Though unlike the Braves, I do not have anything against Giants fans, bloggers, and the like. Grant Brisbee is one of the funniest people on the internet, ou're a real cool guy, etc.
New England Patriots- I may or may or may not still be bitter about Super Bowl XXXIX and SpyGate.
Tampa Bay Lightning- From their poor fans to the bitterness that festers from the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals. That was the year for the Flyers, and the Lightning robbed them of everything. Then the lockout happened and the Flyers spiraled downhill from there until the 2008 playoffs.
Los Angeles Lakers- Eff them. I can't stand Kobe and the media's constant focus on him, regardless of how good he may be.
Ohio State- Evidence that nothing good comes out of Ohio.
@RaiderUte: I thought you Utah fans also hate Miami (Fl) because of the whole "U" thing?
ReplyDeleteHow did I forget the Los Angeles Dodgers? Add them to my list as well.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's Notre Dame. God forbid they join the ACC.
ReplyDeleteIn the pros, the Flyers are #1. I hate their classless fans, that stupid P logo, "The Legion of Doom", that stupid penalty on Tom Poti, and the fact they should have been Baltimore's team.
Followed closely by the Patriots, the Angels, and the Dallas Mavericks.
Probably more professional jealousy I suppose. It never bothered me, but it does get on the nerves of some others. If you live in the State of Utah and you mention "The U", most everyone will know what you're talking about.
