The Nightmare Team: The Worst San Francisco Giants Of All-Time (Outfield & Pitchers)

I left you off with the worst San Francisco Giants infielders of all-time. Today I take a look at the worst outfielders and pitchers in Giants history. And there were a lot to choose from.

Left Field

Fred Lewis (2006-2009)
Why we hate him: I felt bad for Fred Lewis. The poor guy had the incredible task of replacing Barry Bonds in left field. The poor guy never had a chance. In fact I'm sure there is a Giants fan out there who still thinks Fred Lewis didn't receive a fair chance to establish himself on the team. The fact remains though, Fred Lewis struck out way too much and didn't walk. If that wasn't bad enough, Lewis was an absolute butcher in the field. His UZR in 2007 was -0.3 which is really nothing compared to his UZR of -7.2 last year with the Blue Jays.

Redeemable Quality: There is some poor lonely Giants fan out there with a Fred Lewis with a sad look in his/her face.

Honorable Mention, Mark DeRosa (2010-Present): Has made more money not playing with the Giants.

Centerfield

Aaron Rowand (2008-Forever)
Why we hate him: Oh there are so many reasons to list why I hate Rowand. From the dumb batting stance that makes him look like he's taking a shit at the plate. To his dumb look on his face when strikes out. To his petition to swing at every slider and always miss. To his big contract. Rowand will go down as one of the worst free agent signings in Giants history.

Redeemable Quality: Rowand is still an above average centerfielder. So he's not a complete waste of money.

Honorable Mention, Marvin Bernard (1995-2003): An honorable mention because he didn't make as much money as Rowand and he gave me an autograph back in the Candlestick days that I still have.

Right Field

Moises Alou (2005-2006)
Why we hate him: The Big what if with Alou on the Giants is what if neither he nor Bonds ever got hurt? Alou was suppose to be the final piece around Bonds to help the Giants compete for a championship. They rarely played on the field at the same time with each other. Alou had the dreaded calf sprain which kept him out of all his games. And it did feel like Alou missed a lot of time while with the Giants.

Redeemable Quality: When Alou did play, he was very productive.

Honorable Mention, Michael Tucker (2004-2005): He was signed by the Giants which lead to them giving up a compensation pick to the Royals. Everything you need to know about the Brian Sabean era right there.

Starting Pitcher

Matt Morris (2006-2007)
Why we hate him: Morris is probably more famous for questioning the Giants front office the year Bonds was trying to break Aaron's record than for his pitching. Morris was shipped to the gulag Pittsburgh when he questioned if the Giants were more interested in Bonds home run chase and filling up the ballpark than if they were interested in winning games. Morris wasn't a bad pitcher for the Giants, but he could justify his 3-year $27 million dollar contract that he signed.

Redeemable Quality: Traded for Rajai Davis who of course was too young for the Giants. WE NEED VETERAN PLAYERS! WE NEED TO GIVE AARON ROWAND 60 MILLION DOLLARS INSTEAD OF KEEPING THIS PUNK KID.

Honorable Mention, Livan Hernandez (1999-2002): His performance in game 7 of the 2002 World Series forever left a bad taste in my mouth.

Relief Pitcher

Armando Benitez (2005-2007)
Why we hate him: There have been a lot of despised players in Giants history, but Armando Benitez might be the most despised Giant of all-time. How do I know that? After trading Benitez to the Marlins in 2007, Giants GM Brian Sabean basically admitted that the fans hated Benitez. When Benitez wasn't injured he was committing two balks in the same inning one which became the game winning run against the Mets. No one shed a tear the day Benitez left.

Redeemable Quality: His trade cleared the way for Brian Wilson to become the Giants closer.

Honorable Mention, Jack Taschner (2005-2008): Gave up more runs than innings pitched. All you need to know.

  1. Fred Lewis was so embarrassing in the field.

  2. I actually really liked Marvin Benard. I know he had a pretty medicore OBP and a poor stolen base success rate for someone who was allegedly a leadoff hitter... but I still really enjoyed watching him play as kid/teen.
