College Football Open Thread

Today is my favorite day of the year. With the return of college football means a lot of things. Summer is almost over. Christmas is around the corner. The World Series is a month away. And the NFL kicks off.

Today and all Saturday's until December are special days. I especially love these days because I live on the West Coast. Games start at 9 in the mourning and last till midnight. I never miss the action. This is an open thread for you to make comments on the games that you are currently watching. I will update this post with notes from the games that I'm watching. I hope everyone has a spectacular day.

Also here's the announcing schedule and the thread for the Pam Ward Chronicles from Awful Announcing:

Mourning Games Notes:

- I didn't think it was possible, but Greg Paulus even looks like a douche in football pads.

- LOL, Paulus' first snap of his college football career went right over his head and is recovered by Minnesota.

- After some early miscue's, Paulus actually looks good as the Syracuse Quarterback. He has a gun for an arm and is pretty accurate. I think he choose the wrong sport to play for four years.

- Luckily for Tennessee they are playing Western Kentucky University. The Vols committed two early turnovers but WKU couldn't take advantage of them. Super recruit Byrce Brown scored his first touchdown run and Jonathon Crompton threw a touchdown to give Tennessee the 14-0 lead in the 2nd quarter.

- Ohio State is surprisingly throwing the ball today. I didn't think there would be a day where I would see Ohio State throw the ball more than running it.

- Syracuse acutally has an offense. Paulus leads the Orange from a 14-0 deficit to a 20-14 halftime lead. And of course Pam Ward and Ray Bentley are drooling all over Paulus.

- For some reason Jim Tressel took out Terrell Pryor midway through the 2nd quarter. The OSU backup quarterback took the rest of the snaps for the half. I wonder if Pryor is hurt or is OSU trying to save him for next week's game against USC?

- Also Iowa could be this year's Michigan. Iowa is currently losing to FCS Northern Iowa 10-3 at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. And they just committed a huge turnover to N. Iowa.

- What a finish to the Ohio St.-Navy game. With time running out in the 4th quarter, Ohio State went for it on 4th down. Navy stopped them and got the ball back. Then Navy drove down the field and scored and were only down two. Then Navy stupidly tried a pass for the 2-point conversion and it was intercepted by Ohio State and returned for the safety. Ohio State managed to hold onto the lead. If Ohio State plays like this next week against USC, then will be handed another 35-7 loss.

- Kirk Cousins was very impressive in his first start at quarterback for Michigan State. Cousins threw three touchdowns in the game. Receiver Blair White caught two of those touchdowns. Michigan State also had five running backs with 15 yards or more rushing in the game. Is Michigan State the sleeper team of the Big Ten?

- Crazy finish to the Iowa-Northern Iowa game. UNI drives down the field down by one with time running out to set up the field goal. The first attempt is blocked. But UNI would get another chance. And then the second attempt is blocked. Iowa narrowly escapes with the victory. Between Ohio St. and Iowa struggling to beat Navy and UNI, the Big Ten is for another long year.

Noon Notes(I will be live blogging the night games, especially the Cal-Maryland game):

- Very impressive first drives for Georgia and Norte Dame. Both teams drive right down the field and score touchdowns. More impressive was the Georgia defense. The Bulldogs shut down the explosive Oklahoma State offense and force them to punt. Oklahoma St. is this year's Clemson. Vastly overrated.

- Well after calling Oklahoma State overrated, their defense stepped up their game. After letting Georgia drive right down on the field on them, the Ok State defense has held Georgia to just that one touchdown. Meanwhile, their offense continues to struggle in the red zone. This game is far from over. 17-7 Oklahoma State midway through 3rd quarter.

- So much for Illinois being a sleeper team out of the Big Ten. Illinois is losing 30-3 to a Missouri team that lost both Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin. Blaine Gilbert has showed why he was highly recruited out of Texas by throwing three touchdowns for Missouri.

- Also so much for Nevada possibly upsetting Norte Dame. The Fighting Irish are up 35-0. Jimmy Clausen has thrown four touchdowns in three quarters. The most starking improvement by Norte Dame has been their offensive line play. I'm still not believing in them until they face USC.

- Speaking of USC, after struggling in their first four possessions, the Trojans are beating over matched San Jose St 42-3. USC's staple of running backs have rushed for five touchdowns. Super Freshman Matt Barkley has also thrown his first career touchdown.

  1. Enjoy the day! I won't be around much to comment today, but it should be a good day of football regardless.

/Wonders if there will be any Appalachian State-esque upsets.

  5. The Ohio St. defense couldn't stop Navy on a couple of short third downs.

  6. I can't believe Ohio State is actually throwing more than running.

  7. Jonathon Dwyer scors on the first possession of the game for Georgia Tech.

  8. Pam Ward's lovefest with Greg Paulus is sickening.

  9. Did you expect anything else?

  10. Either Minnesota defense is this bad, or Greg Paulus is a capable Quarterback.

  11. The Minnesota defense is that bad. I can't wait till Cal and Jahvid Best play them in two weeks.

  12. I want to see OSU lose to Navy, but it won't happen.

  13. It's amazing OSU has let Navy stick around in this game. They will be beat 35-7 next week to USC.

    ReplyDelete
  14. If Navy could score points quickly, they wouldn't be down 20-7 right now.

  15. I'm going to grab some lunch. Be back for the Noon games.

  16. Nice 52-yard FG by the OSU kicker. That was huge for Ohio State, especially against an offense like Navy that is not designed for quick scores.

  18. Wow. Completely miserable day for the Big 10 thus far. Good thing Penn State is winning!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Somehow Navy manages to stay alive with that 4th down stop. They have to strike fast.

And just like that, TOUCHDOWN NAVY ON A LONG COMPLETION! 85-YARDS!

    ReplyDelete
  20. LOL Ohio State

Pryor throws an interception. Now Navy can tie the game with a TD and 2-point conversion.

    ReplyDelete
  21. INTERCEPTON!!! NAVY BALL AT THE OSU 32 WITH 3:51 TO GO!!! HAHAHAHAHA LOL!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Haha...Ohio St.

Yep, they will be beat by USC 35-7.

  23. Navy should run that same play again.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Horrible decision by the Navy offense. OSU slams the door on them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Damn. Navy's 2-point conversion is returned the other way by OSU for 2.

  26. @JFein, I thought you weren't going to be around today?

  27. Game over. Ohio State can now run out the clock.

  28. I won't be around much to comment today, but it should be a good day of football regardless

Anyways, I'm making time for it. Especially seeing as I'm really pissed off right now and I need an escape and laughs, of which this works great.

  29. i am desperately hoping that Nevada can take it to those jackanapes from Notre blanking Dame

  30. Minny's driving now against 'Cuse with 2:03 left. Pammy and Ray might have to call a depression hotline if the Golden Gophers can pull this off.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ kt1000: Me too! I despise Notre Dame as much as I despise Michigan and Ohio State.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ill leave it at its personal to me when it comes to NFD... ;)

  33. I'm also hoping Norte Dame loses. I root for Nevada because they play in Reno and their head coach Chris Ault is a really nice guy.

  34. i sen you an email..i'll be back around 9:30 EST...i hope Best forgets where the game will be played..maybe then MD can pull the upset...

  35. My former boss played for Norte Dame and for the Denver Broncos. He hasn't had a good year.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @kt, yeah I got it. I'm going to start the blog early anyways. I will talk to you at 9:30.

  37. my local ABC game: Baylor @ Wake forest. pass.

  38. Guess I won't be watching the Giants game today. Dick Stockton is calling the action for Fox.

  39. Tom Hammond is going for the Hubie Brown look

    ReplyDelete
  40. PAULUS THROWS A PICK IN OVERTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. OK State still has no defense.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Jay, agree

OK State has this great offense, but a poor defense. There going to let Georgia score on them in the first possession.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ellestad wins it for Minnesota!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. LOL Greg Paulus LOL Oklahoma State defense

Everyone still like Oklahoma State's chances now?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I see Weis still hasn't lost weight.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @Jay, it's sad that both Weis and Mangino haven't lost weight. How can you look at a kid and tell them to stay in shape when they look like that?

At least the Fridge lost some weight.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Now Nevada is driving right down the field on Norte Dame. I would be happy if this turned into a high scoring game.

    ReplyDelete
  48. San Jose State defense looks very impressive so far against USC. Too bad their offense sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  49. according to Fox, the Texas Rangers aren't plying anybody this afternoon

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ok, the OK State defense has finally settled down. Too bad their offense hasn't gotten anything going.

    ReplyDelete
  51. i realize no one at Fox cares about the Orioles, but can't you get at least the correct players stats w/ the correct hitter? Nick Markakis is not Cesar Izturis. also, shouldn't you pair an Orioles analyst w/ the Rangers announcer Josh Lewin you have doing this game? you know, balance and all?

    ReplyDelete
  52. also, Nevada is really letting me down here...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Matt Millen has already drafted Dez Bryant for the Lions.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @ kt: Balance is something that is lost on Fox, TBS, and MLB. I remember last year during the Phillies-Brewers NLDS series, the PbP announcer was Brian Anderson, the same guy who did and does PbP for the Brewers regular season game.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Right you are, 49er16. Right you are.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oklahoma State has really impressed me in this game. After tat first Georgia drive, I thought OK State was done for.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oklahoma St. very impressive today.

    Joe Cox < Matthew Stafford

    ReplyDelete
  58. Time for BYU vs. Oklahoma.

I bet the Sooners win by at least 25.
