Vick to San Fransisco?

No the headline isn't a joke. The 49ers are considering trading for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Micheal Vick.

“I’m not going to say I’m open or closed,” Singletary said after the 49ers’ state-of-the-franchise event for season-ticket holders. “I’d say it has to be something (general manager) Scot (McCloughan) and I talk about and feel good about one way or the other. But we have not talked about it at this point in great detail. We’re trying to focus on what we have.”

The 49ers still have two quarterbacks on their roster. Shawn Hill and Alex Smith are expected to battle for the quarterback spot. The 49ers have to reduce Smith's huge salary that he will be receiving in 2009.

“I think right now we really need to look at the two guys we have,” Singletary added. “If everything works out with Alex and he’s back, we need to look at that and go as far as we can go with that. The whole Michael Vick thing, we have to sit down and talk about that. But for right now, we have enough on our plates.”

There has also been talks of bringing back former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia.

“You’re always interested in a guy who can win football games and Garcia is that kind of guy,” Singletary said. “But I think the most important thing is to look at what makes sense for us. When I look at Shaun Hill, I think he did a great job last year.

I am not too crazy about either Vick or Garcia. Garcia is going to be 39 at the start of the season and injuries have plague his career recently. Vick is someone I was never crazy about when he was in Atlanta. Put the dog charges away and look at Vick's on-field performance.

His QB rating is 75.7 and he has thrown 52 interceptions to only 71 touchdowns. Also his aggressive running style can get him into trouble. He broke his leg once and missed the first 11 games of the 2003.

While Shawn Hill isn't the sexiest quarterback around he is very efficient. He won't throw a lot of interceptions and he is proven winner when the game is on the line. During the St. Louis game this year Hill was lousy. He looked terrible for the 1st three quarters of the game and the 49ers were down 17-3. Hill lead a comeback in the 4th quarter and the 49ers won the game.

The guy is a winner. I mean come on, he lead Maryland to the Orange Bowl. If the 49ers had him in for the entire season they probably could have made the playoffs. Or at least they wouldn't have lost the Philadelphia or New England games.

While I am for all the options I wouldn't give up on Hill. Former coach Mike Nolan gave up on Hill and went with J.T. O'Sullivan. And now Nolan is taking orders from a 32-year old kid in Denver. If Mike Singletary wants to be a head coach for a long time with San Fransisco, he should stick to Hill.

  1. Wow, I forgot all about J.T. O'Sullivan until you mentioned him.

With the Cardinals potentially losing a lot of people and the weakness of the NFC West, I would not rule out the 9ers making a run this season.

And while San Francisco is a possibility, there is little doubt in my mind that someone will sign Michael Vick (quite a few teams come to mind, Minnesota being on top of the list, although that is just in my mind and before this report came out). And PETA will proceed to file complaints seeking that whomever signed him should spend the rest of their lives in jail.
