Hey Agents! Quit Paying Our Players Under the Table While We Turn Our Heads!

The SEC is hosting their annual media day yesterday and today. With Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and UNC under investigation because allegedly their former players received improper benefits from NFL player agents you can only image the what the big theme was at the media day. With the recent trouble of USC and the current investigations of schools, head coaches are paranoid/angry at the NCAA and of player agents.

Nick Saban is especially paranoid/angry at the moment. Yesterday Saban got up on his high horse and called agents "pimps." I guess that means his players are the whores? Also I'm sure Nicky's agent is quite happy to know that he is referred to as a "pimp." But I digress. Saban would go on to say “Maybe we need to not be so self-absorbed about how it just affects us and the NFL and see how it affects everyone and do something about it.” Keep the whores on a short leash would be my solution. Would he be so worried about doing something if his school wasn't being investigated?

And that's part of the problem with college athletics in general. Nobody wants to do something until circumstances affect them. And nobody wants to take responsibility if their school is punished. Take USC for example. Their school is punished severely for the Reggie Bush/OJ Mayo situation and no one in administration wanted to take responsibility. Pete Carroll acted dumb and former AD Mike Garrett said "Everyone is jealous of USC." And you wonder why Carroll will be running the Seahawks into the ground this fall and Garrett was basically fired a couple of days ago.

At least the head of the NFL players union De Smith is taking responsibility. Smith said that the players union will punish any agent who violated NCAA rules. "God help those agents" said Smith. Now that sounds like a whole lot of saber-rattling and maybe it is, but at least the NFLPA is being pro-active and will take responsibility.

Mike Florio of PFT has another solution, suspend NFL players found guilty of taking the improper benefits. That sounds good and all, but it still doesn't take the issue at hand and that is college administration needs to take more responsibility.

Lord Saban and other college coaches need to take more responsibility. The players also need to take more responsibility. The players know what is right or wrong. They're not two year old kids. They're 18 to 21-year old men who should know what is right and wrong. They should know they can't take money or goods from an agent/booster/family friend or any other person.

This all goes back to the coaches and athletic directors. Either they need to keep a closer eye on their kids or take responsibility when one of their kids takes improper goods. As always you have to love the gall of Lord Nick Saban. So agents, quit paying our players or we'll actually have to turn our heads.

  1. Whitlock's column today was spot on. The NCAA is a greedy culture that isn't being called out.
