College Hoops Saturday Open Thread

It's the last weekend of college basketball for the regular season. A lot rids on this weekend for bubble teams. They can either improve their chances of getting into the tournament or hurt them. Nevertheless it should be a great day of hoops. Leave comments and don't be a troll.

  1. West Virginia & the CBS broadcast area are both getting smashed early.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I loved it last week when GuJo and Raft announced a game together.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I wonder what OU booster bought Willie Warren's earring.

    ReplyDelete
  4. How in the world is West Virginia still in this game? They're the worst shooting Top 25 team. They're 1-8 from the free throw line. Bleh.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I see Villanova uses child labor to clean their floors.

    ReplyDelete
  6. West Virginia isn't passing "the eye test."

    /already tired of that phrase

    ReplyDelete
  7. i'd like to thank Sylvan Landesberg in advance for not living up to his "academic responsibilities" thus ensuring I'm going to greatly enjoy the Terps beatdown of UVA this afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Am I the only one that never figured out why Buffalo Wild Wings tabbed Gary Thorne to do commentary for their basketball commercial?

    ReplyDelete
  9. @ 49er16: I just love it that GuJo is finally doing a Villanova game this year. And he's in Philly!

    ReplyDelete
  10. @JFein i think Thorne does the BWW football commercial as well. and he does have a recognizable voice.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Heh. I just saw the video of Scottie Reynolds knocking down Gus and Greg's announcing table. Why couldn't that have been Brando?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Get ready for another Villanova lead blow!

This time it appears as if West Virginia will be the lucky team.

  14. Remember that 13-point lead? It's down to 7 now.

I fear for this team in the NCAA tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Re: The Book on Antonio Pena:

Last time I saw "MIP" to describe someone in college it meant "Minor In Possession (of Alcohol)."

    /so I've heard
    //damn this cheap laptop

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ugh, I shouldn't have drank so much last night. BTW, Nova is only up 4 now.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ben Wallace could hit more free throws in a game than West Virginia has. Maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  18. And now the game is tied.

Your 2009-2010 Villanova Wildcats, ladies and gentlemen! Where playing only one half of basketball will give you losses and an early tournament ouster.

    ReplyDelete
  19. West Virginia can hit their FT's!

    ReplyDelete
  20. At this rate, Temple has a better shot at going further in the tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  21. And WVU had the lead for a split second.

Sadly, this is normal for Nova this year.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm glad this is a close game. We could get a crazy GuJo call at the end of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  23. As this game picks up, Gus is picking it up, too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. GuJo is right. None of these teams are playing like a top seed in the NCAAs.

My thoughts on Nova's seeding: They'll be a 2 or a 3, depending on how they do in the Big East tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ 49er16: I actually can't recall the last time GuJo did a Villanova game, let alone a time he went nuts during a Nova game.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't believe I might miss the Selection Show next Sunday :-(

    ReplyDelete
  27. Huggy Bear is still pissed. And to think the call GuJo would have made if Fisher makes that layup.

    ReplyDelete
  28. GuJo: "Some of these calls have been horrible."

I didn't know Sean McDonough was doing today's game. He's also right.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That might've been Greg Anthony with the "ha-HA."

    ReplyDelete
  30. Are Big East basketball refs part-time SEC football refs?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love GuJo. He's just ripping the refs in this game.

    ReplyDelete
  32. GuJo: "I don't know what to expect on the officiating," about the no-call on the Reynolds layup.

    ReplyDelete
  33. FISHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    OVERTIME IN PHILADELPHIA!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. The crowd is rocking and GuJo is going crazy. It must be March!

    ReplyDelete
  35. @RJBO: Yes. SEC football refs are the same people that ref Big East basketball.

And wow, WVU, just wow. What an idiotic way to end the half.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why is Katy Tur in this Lowe's commercial?

    /Olbermann'd

    ReplyDelete
  37. Man, I wish these Buffalo Wild Wings commercials would end.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Scoop Jardine thinks West Virginia didn't get that timeout in time.

    /terrible Big East ref'd

    ReplyDelete
  39. "And good! With 5.8 left. Wow!"-GuJo

    ReplyDelete
  40. Reynolds for the win......DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. If only Reynolds makes that three. GuJo would have died from a heart attack.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Would that have counted had it gone down? It was close...

    ReplyDelete
  43. "Cole Aldrich doing it inside a little bit." - Clark Kellogg

    ReplyDelete
  44. Rick Pitino borrowed Aaron Brooks' red jacket from last years' playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Rick Pitino in a red blazer? Who does he think he is? Bruce Pearl?

    ReplyDelete
  46. "This game had Gus Johnson written all over it." - Seth Davis

    ReplyDelete
  47. Aspeaking of Gus, here is the video of him tipping over Gus and Greg's table.

    ReplyDelete
  48. wow... i am very very nervous because UVA has managed to hang around.

    ReplyDelete
  49. One thing I hate about being on Spring Break: having to deal with the different channel numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @ RJBO: Eep! Sorry. I forgot to copy and paste the link. Fail.

  51. Hope you guys don't mind me listening to the Giants game on the radio while watching college basketball on TV?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Save the random linking for me.

/just wanted to link to some possible good news'd

    ReplyDelete
  53. @RJBO: If I post an open thread for The Smackoff again, will you be there?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Louisville boggles my mind:

Get stomped by St. John's, then beat Syracuse at the Dome.
Get crushed by Marquette, hangin' tough with Syracuse in the 2nd half.

    ReplyDelete
  55. @RJBO: Edwin Jackson is pitching against the Giants for Arizona. Is he any good?

    ReplyDelete
  56. All I care about for Nova in the Big East is that they get a double bye. They are not going higher than a 2 and they are not dropping lower than a 3. Let's play enough games where we go into the The Big Dance feeling good, but not tire ourselves out.

    ReplyDelete
  57. West Virginia fans aren't drinking Coke Zero at a tailgate, unless booze is mixed in.

Keith, Jackson was good early last season, but he struggled past the 6th or 7th in the Tigers' stretch choke.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Good to know. He's like Jonathon Sanchez then. Fades late in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The "60 Minutes" ticking sound effect is good for something else at CBS...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Edwin Jackson might be better in the NL. Honestly, I still don't understand the three-way Tigers' trade (unless it was just to get rid of Granderson & Jackson).

    ReplyDelete
  61. I could see Jackson being better in the NL. Especially in the weak NL West.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Louisville is still leading over Syracuse.

    ReplyDelete
  63. @ 49er16: Wait? You mean to say that there isn't a weak NL divison?

I can't wait to see Halladay dominate the NL East.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Damn. Louisville is taking it to Cuse.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The Cards are leading by 7. Are there any elite teams this season?

  68. Ooh! OOOH! What's happening in the Kansas game?

    /Wednesday Night'd
    //turns to CBS
    ///never mind

    ReplyDelete
  69. Wesley Johnson has 4 fouls. I see Big East refs are consistent. Consistently brutal.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sheesh. Louisville can't miss today.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Following the pattern, Louisville will lose their first game in the Big East Tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm going out with him tonight!" - Fran Friscilla

    ReplyDelete
  73. Pervis Ellison is walking through that door, fans! Doctor Dunkenstein, too!

    /Bizarro Pitino'd

    ReplyDelete
  74. I was in Freedom Hall to receive my FFA American Farmer Degree back in 07. The building doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's really nice on the inside.

    ReplyDelete
  75. South Carolina's Lakeem Jackson's FT Percentage: 28%

    Chris Dudley thinks that's terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  76. This is going to be an awesome court rushing.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Louisville fans do it right. They know they've been there before and don't need to storm the court.

    ReplyDelete
  78. "Not even Joe's bracket busting can bust us now." - Rick Pitino

    Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  79. UConn losing to South Florida? They're still one of the Last Four In.

    /Lunardi'd

    ReplyDelete
  80. If UConn loses to S. Florida, then their NIT bound.

    ReplyDelete
  81. UConn has lost to South Florida; Vandy is losing to South Carolina.

    ReplyDelete
  82. @ Keith: Are you going to any of the NCAA Tourney games in San Jose?

    ReplyDelete
  83. @JFein: Unfortunately no. I did have an opportunity a couple of years ago to go to the NCAA tournament when they had games in Sacramento. I specifically remember watching the Vanderbilt-George Washington game.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Say hello to the NIT, UConn. And South Carolina has beat Kentucky and Vanderbilt this year.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Spero Dedes? Bob Wenzel? UCLA-Arizona State? Do you want anyone to watch, CBS?

    ReplyDelete
  86. As long as Wenzel isn't with Bolerjack.............

/I got the crappiest announcing parings for last year's tournament. I had either Brando or Wenzeljack for both days of the opening round.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Penn State cut the Purdue lead to 5, without Talor battle.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Is Spero Dedes taking the Carter Blackburn role on CBS' NCAA coverage?

    ReplyDelete
  89. I never heard of Spero Dedes before.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Dedes does some of the radio play-by-play for the Lakers. I think.

The Purdue lead is down to 3.
Talor Battle out for Penn State (cramps).

    ReplyDelete
  91. Purdue foolishly fouled a three-point shooter up by four.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Purdue wins a piece of the Big 10 title.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Holy ugly courts! Check out the Big South Championship game!

    ReplyDelete
  94. The 49ers must love former 1st overall draft picks that play QB and suck. They signed David Carr for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  95. *points and laughs in direction of 49ers*

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think Digger Phelps is gunning for a walk on role in the movie Leatherheads. Maybe he isn't aware it came out in 2008.

    ReplyDelete
  97. How in the world could K-State lose to Iowa State at home?

    ReplyDelete
  98. @ RJBO: By overlooking them after losing to Kansas? Or maybe they were thinking of what it would be like to play in a locale that was not one of the plainest in America?

    ReplyDelete
  99. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  100. It's great to see Maryland at the top of the standings!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Noted Rat Family member Joe Lunardi had K-State as a #1 seed after they lost to Kansas.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Milwaukee has a one point lead over Butler at the half in the Horizon League Semis.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Nearly missing the opening tip-off? How very Olympic Hockey of you, ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  104. it is incredible how far Scheyer has gotten with that kick his legs out as he shoots move. you'd think ACC refs would be aware of it by now.

    ReplyDelete
  105. This is the second most disastrous start on ESPN tonight.

    /Tennessee 17, Mississippi State 0

    ReplyDelete
  106. ESPN should be embarrassed with itself for running that Duke 3-S montage

    ReplyDelete
  107. 19-6 Duke? Is the Magic & Bird Special still on?

    ReplyDelete
  108. i guess the ACC has officially decided that UNC has no chance of making the NCAA's. they're getting no calls

    ReplyDelete
  109. UNC is quite unfamiliar with this sensation of not getting calls.

    ReplyDelete
  110. At least Milwaukee is keeping it close against Butler.

    ReplyDelete
  111. and Vitale just channeled Tim Brando with the "there's nothing finer" reference

    ReplyDelete
  112. i am shocked speechless seeing that guy there

    ReplyDelete
  113. i am done watching UNC play like a middle school team. at least the Terps will share the title...

    ReplyDelete
  114. kt, don't you want to find out how Dickie V could justify his pick of Scheyer Marshall Bill as the ACC POY?

    ReplyDelete
  115. RJBO and why Coach K should be Coach of the Year? and why Mason Plumlee should be the ACC Freshman of the year award?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Dickie V: "Those kids in the tents are the future leaders of our country."

Is that passed out picture of Reggie Love still floating around?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Milwaukee within 1 w/ 7:00 to play

    ReplyDelete
  118. *finally turns off Duke Destruction*

...David Kaplan? For three years on end on his WGN radio show, he said Brian Roberts is this close to being traded to the Cubs.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Butler is getting every call...when did the Horizon League hire ACC refs?

    ReplyDelete
  120. You'd think they would want two Horizon League teams in the Tourney. I guess not.

More David Kaplan (the color commentator on the Butler game) ranting: That guy kept saying how Jon Scheyer could be the best player ever before he got to Duke. Bleh.

    ReplyDelete
  121. @RJBO that was a guy the Cubs could have used. especially since they gave up on & traded every single player the O's wanted back from them.

and why does Clete Thomas have to treat the Orioles the way Ben Roethlisberger treats women?

    ReplyDelete
  122. It was just annoying to hear about a Brian Roberts trade EVERY FREAKING SHOW!!

    +50, kt.
You better hope Clete doesn't get traded to the AL East.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Murray State is about to wrap up a Tourney spot.

    ReplyDelete
  124. RJBO, you should be hoping Luke Scott doesn't end up in the AL Central

    ReplyDelete
  125. I better hope I don't cut off Luke Scott on the freeway.

/remembers the Outside the Lines piece about guns & athletes

    ReplyDelete
  126. And it's going to be Butler versus Wri--Horizon League Semifinal #1 Detroit vs Wright State is next on ESPNU.

    /NBC'd

    ReplyDelete
  127. actually, Gilbert Arenas should be hoping not to cut Luke Scott off on the highway...Luke's pissed MLB has banned guns in the clubhouse because of Arenas.

Butler is going to the HL Championship game

    ReplyDelete
