Foul Ball: Barves Implosion & No Runs For Greinke

Mmm, nice and firm
I haven't done a foul ball post in a while, so let's dust off the cob webs and recap last night's action.

New York Yankees 6, Atlanta 4: The past two seasons Jonny Venters has been one of the best relievers in baseball. This season Venters has returned back to earth thanks to a BABIP that is over 400. So luck hasn't been on his side. And bad luck struck Venters last night as he threw a good pitch to Alex Rodriguez, but A-Rod is a great batter and great batters hit difficult pitches for game-tying grand slams. Nick Swisher would hit a two-run home run in that same inning to give the Yankees the victory.

Pittsburgh 6, Baltimore 8: Did you ever think at the beginning of the year that by June 12th both of these teams would be over .500? Well they both were and they decided to excite the Baltimore crowd with a little home run derby. Chris Davis, Adam Jones, and Mark K. Reynolds all hit bombs for the O's. The Pirates staged a late rally, but ultimately fell short. Also of note Brian Roberts made his long awaited return to the O's lineup and he went 3-for-4.

New York Mets 11, Tampa Bay 2: The Mets needed to pound someone. They had lost two out of three to Washington and were swept by the Yankees. So the poor Rays were the victims. You know the Mets had a good night when Ike "I can't hit the broad side of a barn" Davis hit a home run and drove in three runs.

Milwaukee 1, Kansas City 2: Zach Greinke made his return to Kansas City, gave up a leadoff home run to Alex Gordon, then watched his team give him no run support at all. Luis Mendoza and his 4.89 ERA shut down the Brewers in six innings.

Houston 3, San Francisco 6:  Madison Bumgarner struck out 12 Astros and took Bud Norris deep last night for his first career home run. Also Brandon Belt finally hit his first home run of the season. If Belt gets going the Giants offense will finally be respectable.

Philadelphia 7, Minnesota 11: Want to know why the Phillies suck this year? They gave up 11 runs to the Twins. 11 runs to the Twins! Phillies also gave up three home runs including one to the great named Trevor Plouffe. On the bright side for the Phillies, Chad Qualls didn't give up a run in relief so there's that.

Boston 2, Miami 1: After a scolding hot month of May, the Marlins have fallen back to earth. One big reason for this dropoff is because the Marlins have stopped scoring. And once again the Marlins failed to score on Tuesday night against Boston. Worst of all the Marlins left 7 men on base. You're not going to win that way gents.

Chicago White Sox 6, St. Louis 1: Now how are the Cardinals going to stop the Pirates when they can't even beat the White Sox? Like the Marlins the Cardinals have also stopped hitting. Adam Wainwright didn't pitch badly last night, the relievers certainly did, but the Cards hitters just never supported him. Adam Dunn continued his resurgence with a home run while playing right field.

Video of the Day: "That's a clown question, bro.

  1. The Phillies xFIP last night: 4.69

That's not good, but their ERA was 12.38 and the offense scored 7 runs.

The Phillies are losing games because the HR/FB, BABIP, and LOB% gods are taking a collective shit on the Phillies' league best pitching.
