Hockey?

I ventured to the Mos Eisley Cantina last night for a brew and pastrami sandwich. I hadn't ate anything all day and really didn't feel like cooking, so I made my way to the Cantina for a meal. Much to my surprise the usual gang of guys were watching hockey.

Now I've always liked watching the Sharks and the NHL playoffs, but I won't watch many random hockey games. I just don't love the NHL that much. But with the Monday night football game had yet started, the NBA is locked out, and college basketball doesn't start until Friday there weren't many options on television. What I did not know though was that the Colonel and Boz are both hockey fans.

"When I was a kid, my family lived in Edmonton for five years," says the Boz. "Those years happened to be when Gretzky, Messier, Coffey and company were dominating the league. Our family eventually moved back to the states, but I brought my love of hockey with me and have still followed the sport."

You learn something new everyday. I've come to Mos Eisley Cantina for two years now and I have never seen a random hockey game on one of the TVs like last night when they were watching New York vs Boston.

"We were technically waiting for the Monday night football to start," says the Colonel. "So we started watching this game. I dated a girl from Vermont while in college who loved hockey and she got me watching the sport. I don't follow as closely anymore, but I'll still watch a hockey game."

Will this become a trend though at the Cantina? With the NBA on extended hiatus, will we start watching more hockey?

"Probably not," says the Boz. "College basketball starts soon so we'll probably turn on that sport when it starts. I like hockey, but the majority of people who come in here want to watch football, baseball, or basketball."

So hockey won't be a must watch at the Cantina. What a shame. I was prepared to start debating why the Detroit Red Wings suck this year. I guess it could happen one day, but for at the moment hockey at the Mos Eisley Cantina that doesn't involve the San Jose Sharks will just have it's one moment in the sun.

"I guess I'll have to watch Carolina vs New Jersey at home tomorrow," says a sarcastic Colonel. Yes, yes he will. As soon at 5:30 rolled around, we started watching Eagles vs Bears.
