I can't believe how this college football season is going. We start out with jam packed weeks of college football and we're now at the point where I can only find a handful of college games that I actually want to watch this week. I don't know if the problem is that the SEC is just a two-team conference this year? I don't know if conference realignment and shuck the waters so much that the cannonball effect has plagued these conferences with mediocrity. I don't know if it's because USC and Ohio State are still recovering from scandals so college football isn't as deep as normal. All I can say is this might be one of the mediocre college football seasons ever.
There isn't a Cam Newton to keep out attention away from conference realignment and the lack of exciting games. There isn't a super team like the old USC teams that everyone wants to see loose. Sure we have a handful of undefeated teams, but they all basically look alike. None of them stand out from each other, and none of them have a Cam Newton or a Tim Tebow to cheer or boo against. This is a mundane college football season and this week's slate of games proves that.
Note: I usually talk about the Thursday night game, but this week it's UCLA vs Arizona. I love college football but I find no reason to watch this game. Unless you're into self-harm and you want to listen to Craig James.
Saturday, October 22
Oklahoma State at Missouri, Noon (FX: Gus Johnson, Charles Davis, Tim Brewster): This is a game to watch because Oklahoma State is one of those offenses you just have to see. They can score a lot of points every game and do it in a very astute matter. Throw in Gus Johnson calling this game and you have a game to be excited for.
Auburn at LSU, 3:30 (CBS: Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson, Tracy Wolfson): This game was made interesting when LSU suspended Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu and Spencer Ware for this game. This is huge for LSU because Mathieu has forced six turnovers this season and scored twice. Ware is the team's leading rusher. While I doubt LSU slips up this week, the possibility is always there.
Air Force at Boise State, 3:30 (VS: Paul Burmeister, Shaun King, Anthony Herron): I don't know if this will be much of a game. Boise State so far this year has blown everyone out. Air Force can be competitive if their offense is rolling, but it has to get rolling as soon as the game starts.
USC at Notre Dame, 7:30 (NBC: Tom Hammond, Mike Mayock, Alex Flanagan): Night games in South Bend are usually something you need to at least get a glimpse of. Notre Dame stadium is spectacular to look at under darkness. The game itself though will probably be as mundane as the rest of the games on the schedule.
Washington at Stanford, 8:00 (ABC: Sean McDonough, Matt Millen, Heather Cox): This game truly intrigues me. Washington has a poor man's Cam Newton in Keith Price. I want to see if the Stanford offense can stop someone who is as big as Price is. If this game was in Seattle I would have picked Washington to upset the Cardinal.
Wisconsin at Michigan State, 8:00 (ESPN: Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit, Erin Andrews): Hard to believe but this will be Wisconsin's first true road game of the year. And the Badgers wonder why they're undefeated but only ranked 6th in the BCS. I'm also interested to see how many cheap shots the Sparty defense takes this week. Last week the Sparty defense took more cheap shots than Claude Lemieux.
Recipe of the Week, Yummy Mummy Heads: Another week, another recipe courtesy of James Craven. Yummy Mummy Heads are as you can tell, a Halloween recipe. Basically this recipe is potato pizzas. Yes pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni on a baked potato. Now tell me that doesn't sound delicious.
Alcoholic Beverage of the Week, John Daly: If Lemonade and ice tea are mixed together it's called a Arnold Palmer. If lemonade, ice tea are mixed with a triple sec and vodka, it's called a John Daly. I actually tried this drink recently at the Mos Eisley Cantina and it's great if you like really sweet drinks. If you don't like sweet drinks you should try a John Daly regardless.
The lack of compelling players this year has hurt the game.
