Running Diary: The Day After the Apocalypse

By now you know about Buster Posey's injury. It sucks for Posey and the Giants and the fans because of what Posey means to everyone. I'm not going to hand wring and say baseball needs to change their rules about players blocking the plate. I'm not going to say Scott Cousins slide was dirty. It was clean and Posey was caught between a rock and a hard place.

It sucks for everyone involved that this has happened. The Giants though have to move on. They weren't scoring when Posey was in the lineup so they'll probably struggle even more now to score. Players like Aubrey Huff and Cody Ross must step up until Pablo Sandoval returns.

So that's why I'm doing another running diary on a Giants game. Will the Giants offense respond with Posey being out? Will they avoid the sweep from the Marlins? Will they take revenge for Posey and beam one of the Marlins hitters? Let's find out.

12:30 PM: Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow start off the broadcast like one of their children just died. Not exactly the way I wanted to start off this game. I think I'll listen to Jon Miller and Dave Flemming on the radio instead today.

Giants Lineup: CF Torres, SS Burriss, 2B Sanchez, 1B Huff, RF Ross, LF Rowand, 3B Tejada, C Whiteside, P Vogelsong

And I thought the lineup was depressing with Posey in it..............

12:34: Giants sideline reporter Amy G reports that not only is Posey hurt, but also infielder Mike Fontenot and outfielder Darren Ford. So the Giants had to call up three players from the minors named Brandon Belt, Chris Stewart, and Brandon Crawford. Belt is the only guy for sure we know who can hit.

12:46: The Giants players looked lost not seeing Posey lead them onto the field for the first inning. Hopefully Huff and Ross step up their production. Also Ryan Vogelsong is pitching today for the Giants and an injured Barry Zito. Injuries haven't been kind to the Giants this year.

12:49: Angel Hernandez is the home plate umpire. Every force is acting against the Giants right now. And you think I'm joking.

12:52: "Do duck boats sail?"-Jon Miller. I'm going to say no because they can also drive on land.

12:55: That's certainly a good sign for the Giants. With one man on and two outs, Aubrey Huff makes a slick play in the field and tosses the ball to Vogelsong for the third out. Huff looked smooth on that play.

12:58: Andres Torres uses the drag bunt option to get on base. Torres will eventually be stranded because the Giants can get on base, but they can't drive in runs. It's quite pathetic to watch. /Makes reach 2nd base joke, but can't hit the home run joke.

1:03: Right on cue. Huff hits into a double play. This team is great at two things. Pitching and stranding base runners.

1:10: Ryan Vogelsong pitches a perfect 2nd inning. Vogelsong has been a godsend for this team. He's filled in for an injured Barry Zito and has been excellent. In fact, there's even a discussion going if the Giants should finally dump Zito in favor Vogelsong. I know I would certainly be in favor of that.

1:13: I have no idea why, but Pat Burrell hasn't been getting any playing time this year even though he was of the Giants best batters. And once again, Burrell isn't starting today in favor of Aaron Rowand. Huh? Rowand doesn't hit for power and strikes out way too much. Burrell will at least draw a walk. And as soon as I rant on this topic, Rowand hits a double.

1:16: Miguel Tejada swings at a pitch over his shoulders for strike three. I'm glad he's on this team and receiving playing time. Let's just say the Giants also miss Pablo Sandoval's bat as well right now.

1:18: You're going to shocked. The Giants stranded another base runner. Shocking I know.

1:26: Okay, I'm glad Rowand is playing today. He just made a spectacular play in left field for the third out of the inning and saved a run. No way in hell Burrell makes that play.

1:35: Three innings in the book, three innings the Giants have stranded a runner at second base. All I can do is laugh now. Still no score.

1:40: Vogelsong once again goes through the Marlins lineup 1,2,3 in the fourth inning. If he can pitch a complete game today, I'll be happy.

1:44: And down goes the Giants 1..2...3. This game might be over in a quick two hours. I hope so because I can barely watch the Giants right now. It's too painful.

1:48: I hate Mike Stanton.

1:51: "Mike Stanton has a swing from the previous era."-Duane Kuiper. I'm not sure how to interpret this quote, but I think Kuiper is suggesting Stanton has a swing like the roided up players of the late 90's.

1:54: Despite the leadoff double, the Giants get out of the fifth inning without giving up a run. I guess the Marlins felt bad for the Giants and have decided to strand leadoff hitters like the Giants. They're just so cute in South Florida.

1:58: Eli Whiteside might have the slowest swing I've ever seen. How he's even on a major league roster is astounding. I'm convinced I could swing the bat faster than him and make contact. Oh, Ryan Vogelsong just hit his fifth single of the year.

2:00: Of course the Giants strand another base runner. I've lost count now how many they have left on base. It's really pathetic.

2:05: I hate Chris Coughlan. I hate the Marlins. Can't this team be contracted yet?

2:07: Marlins score. This game is over. 1-0 Marlins.

2:13: Giants Baseball: Weak Pop Ups

2:23: Bases loaded for the Marlins with two outs. I have a feeling this is going to end badly for the Giants. How this offense looks today, there's no way they make up more than one run.

2:25: Thankfully that asshole Chris Coughlan popped up. Still 1-0 Marlins going into the seventh inning stretch.

2:27: "Here's the replay of the Posey injury and if you're tired of seeing it don't look."-Duane Kuiper. I've seen that play so much already, I'm just numb watching it by now.

2:30: The Marlins are just toying with the Giants now. It's kind of like when you're a kid and you pull the wings off a dragonfly and then watch it die. It's exactly like that.

2:39: Vogelsong has been excellent today. He's given up one run on the day, but will most likely pick up the loss or no decision because the Giants offense is so fucking pathetic. I feel bad for the guy. He didn't deserve this.

2:45: Pat Burrell pinch hits and goes from a 0-2 count to a walk. That's why Burrell should be playing everyday in left field for the Giants. He's the only batter in this lineup that can do that everyday.

2:48: Right on cue. Andres Torres grounds into a double play and ends the inning. Mercifully there's only one inning left in this steaming pile of crap game.

2:57: This is like a death march. Thankfully there's only a half an inning left.

3:02: 1 out in the ninth and Freddy Sanchez doubles. 5 bucks says he'll be the 1,243 Giants base runner stranded today.

3:06: Fitting the game ends on a weak ground ball. Marlins win 1-0. "You have to tip your cap to the Marlins."-Mike Kukow. Um no. You have to pull down your pants and moon the Giants, Kruk.

So let's recap the last 24 hours surrounding the Giants. Posey gets hurt and is out for an eternity. The Giants lose 1-0 to the Marlins. The Giants get swept by the Marlins. Terrific 24 hours. Even better news, they go to Milwaukee to face another team with a great offense. I'm going to get hammered this weekend.
