Quick Hits: Is South Carolina Really That Good? & Lane Kiffin Doing Lane Kiffin Things

I shouldn't have stayed up to midnight last night, because I'm paying for it this morning. Thank God I don't have to go to work until 2:30 this afternoon. First here's a couple of announcements. I'm not live blogging tomorrow's games. I figured since this is Labor Day weekend, not as many people will be home for the game. I might live blog Monday's Boise State-Virginia Tech game depending on what everyone is doing that day. There will be an open thread for tomorrow's games and I'll try to update that thread throughout the day, like I did last year, with videos, pictures, and my thoughts on the games. Until then, here's my thoughts on last night's games.

- I'm not buying South Carolina. The Cocks thrashed a C-USA team that's predicted to finish fourth in their conference. There's talent on the South Carolina team, but it's a young team. Freshman receiver Ace Sanders and Freshman running back Marcus Lattimore looked very impressive, but just wait until they start playing SEC competition. I'm not buying into the Gamecocks just yet.

- Lane Kiffin went Lane Kiffin in his debut with USC against Hawaii. On the first three touchdowns USC scored, Kiffin had the team attempt three 2-point conversions instead of just kicking the extra point. How very Kiffin of him. Matt Barkley was very impressive last night and the USC defense was just the opposite. The USC defense gave up nearly 600 yards of total offense to Hawaii. What's going to happen to USC when they play Oregon or Oregon State? Will the defense give up over 1,000 yards to opposing teams? USC, even though they're on probation, will be an interesting team to watch this season.

- How about that Pittsburgh-Utah game? Terrible special teams, fumbles, interceptions, and Dave Wannstedt looking confused. And how about the ending of the game? While Pittsburgh was attempting to kick the game-tying field goal, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham iced the kicker twice the second time happened after the Pitt kicker missed the field goal. The Pitt kicker drilled the third field goal and the game went to overtime. On the first possession of overtime Pitt quarterback Tino Sunseri threw an interception. Utah would go on to kick the game-winning field goal. Of course known of this would have happened if Wannstache would have went for the victory instead of the tie. Quite the game to start the college football season.

- Both Terrelle Pryor and Jacory Harris were impressive for their respective teams, setting up next week's Ohio State-Miami game.

- Georgia State, the start up school coached by Bill Curry, began their college football career's by stomping some school called Shorter. Apparently Shorter is a NAIA school in Rome, Georgia. I'm definitely learning something new every day.
