Foul Ball: Strasburg's Impressive Debut & Nepotism

Washington 5 Pittsburgh 2: The much talked about debut of Stephen Strasburg lived up to the hype. Strasburg went seven innings giving up two runs, four hits, no walks, and 14 strikeouts. The 14 strikeouts was the most impressive stat of the night, because only two other players since 1952 have struck out as many batters in their pitching debut. Strasburg was treated to a shaving cream pie after the game, because Major Leaguers still think that is funny. Of course, Strasburg was pitching against the Pirates.

Cincinnati 0 San Francisco 3
: Matt Cain threw his second complete game shutout in his last three starts. Cain shut down the Reds giving up only seven hits while striking out five. Cain also helped himself in the game, by knocking in a run in the eighth inning. Juan Uribe continued his hot streak by homering in the game.

Philadelphia 10 Florida 8: There was another big debut in the major leagues last night. Michael Stanton made his debut for the Florida Marlins against the Phillies. Stanton went 3 for 5 in his debut scoring two runs. Ben Francisco won the game in the eighth inning for the Phillies with a two-run single.

Cleveland 2 Boston 3: Tim Wakefield made history on Tuesday night. Wakefield became the Red Sox leader in innings pitch with 2777 innings surpassing Roger Clemens. Wakefield was pretty stoic when he spoke about the record, “That’s pretty cool.” Well said Tim, now just keep throwing that knuckleball, because we all need knuckleball throwers in our life.

NY Mets 2 San Diego 1, 11 Innings: Ike Davis sent Mets fans happy in the bottom of the 11th with a walk-off home run off of Padres reliever Edward Mujica. Mike Pelfrey was Cained going nine innings giving up one run, five hits, no walks, and striking out six but he picked up the no decision because of a lack of run support.

Nepotism Runs Baseball!: Nepotism has always ran through baseball. Tommy Lasorda famously picked his best friends son Mike Piazza in the MLB Draft. Ken Griffey Sr. played with his son Junior on the Mariners. When the Giants signed Barry Bonds, the team hired Bobby Bonds as a coach. So it isn't uncommon for family members to be with the same ballclub.

During the later rounds of this years draft, nepotism ran deep. Sons of managers Bruce Bochy, Jim Leyland, and Ozzie Guillen were all drafted by the ballclubs their fathers manage. That wasn't even the best draft pick. The best draft pick was Jamie Moyer's son being drafted by the Minnesota Twins. Yes, Jamie Moyer is so old his son was selected in this year's draft.

Other sons of former Major League players that were drafted was: Cory Vaughn (Mets), son of Greg Vaughn; Dickie Thon Jr. (Toronto), son of Dickie Thon; Garrett Buechele (Texas), son of Steve Buechele; Kellen Sweeney (Toronto), brother of Ryan Sweeney; Mel Rojas Jr. (Pittsburgh), son of Mel Rojas; Benjamin Gamel (Yankees), brother of Mat Gamel; Connor Narron (Baltimore), son of Jerry Narron; and Drew Cisco (Cincinnati), grandson of Galen Cisco.
