Foul Ball: Walkoffs, Sweeps & Zito is Back!

Cincinnati 5 NY Mets 4, 10 Innings: All three games in this series have ended in a walkoff. Yesterday, Orlando Cabrera sent the crowd home smiling as the Reds won off of his walkoff home run in the tenth inning.

Dusty Baker Quote: Cincinnati hasn't made it easy on themselves this year. From the AP recap, “This was some series,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “We’re not doing it easy, but the main thing is we’re doing it.”

Minnesota 5 Detroit 4: The Twins got out their brooms and swept the Tigers out of Target Field. The crazy stat of the night also came out of this game. The Twins have scored two runs in the first inning in six straight games, the first time this has happened since 1971. With the sweep over Detroit, the Twins lead the AL Central by 3.5 games.

Oakland 4 Texas 1: The AL West stinks. There is no other way to describe it. The A's lead the division despite being only one game over .500 and this doesn't even take into the fact that the A's are 4-8 on the road. No team despite the A's have won a game in the past two games. The AL West has effectively taken over from the NL West as the worst division in baseball.

Cleveland 4 Toronto 5: An error in the ninth lead to a Adam Lind two-run home run off of Chris Perez to give the Blue Jays the victory and the sweep. The Indians have now lost four straight games and eight out of ten. Another long summer for the city of Cleveland, especially if LeBron leaves.

Florida 2 San Francisco 3: Barry Zito picked up his fifth win of the season and Brian Wilson did his usual high-wire act but ultimately picked up the save. Zito (seven hits, one run, one walk, four strikeouts) looks to have regained his 2002 Cy Young form. Matt Downs went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored and seems to have cemented himself as the everyday 2nd baseman for the Giants.

Boston 3 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1: John Lackey went seven innings giving up two hits, one run, two walks, and four strikeouts in his first start against his former team to pick up the victory. The Angels have lost six straight games and seven out of ten games to plant themselves in last place of the AL West.

Houston 4 Arizona 2: Carlos Lee has finally hit a home run for the year and it couldn't have come at a bigger time for Houston. Lee hit a two-run walkoff home run to snap the Astros eight-game losing streak.

Carlos Lee Quote: Lee couldn't be more overjoyed about hitting his first home run of the year. From the AP recap, “It was great, a great feeling, especially to come back and win that game,” Lee said.

Washington 6 Atlanta 7, 10 Innings: The Braves have finally snapped their eight-game road losing streak. Matt Diaz knocked in the game-winning run in the tenth inning to finally give the Braves a road win. Diaz had been batting below the Mendoza Line before the game, and maybe this hit will snap him out of his slump. That's at least what Bobby Cox believes, “I had a hunch Matty’s going to get hot,” Cox said. “He’s a hitting machine. He just hasn’t got it going, but he will.”
