Pittsburgh 0 Cincinnati 9: Two days after watching Dallas Braden throw a Perfect Game, Johnny Cueto almost threw a Perfect Game. If a single didn't bounce off of Paul Janish's glove in the third inning, Cueto would have had a Perfect Game. Cueto will have to settle for a one-hit complete game shutout, his first complete game of his career.
Johnny Cueto Quote: Cueto talks about the near Perfect Game. From the AP recap, “I was thinking about it (the near no-hitter) all the time, especially with it being only one hit, especially a ground ball like that,” Cueto said.
Baltimore 1 Seattle 5: What do you get when two bad baseball teams face each other? A collection of bad baseball. The difference in this game though was Cliff Lee pitching for Seattle. Lee (7 1/3 innings, 8 hits, 1 run, 2 strikeouts) looked like his former Cy Young self in picking up his first win with the Mariners. It's not confirmed, but I believe Ken Griffey Jr. didn't take a nap during the game.
Chicago Cubs 3 Florida 2: The Cubs lineup was once again shut out. The Cubs managed to reach base seven times with hits and 1 walk, but were never able to get that knockout hit. Cody Ross and Gaby Sanchez both homered for the Marlins as former Cubs farmhand Ricky Nolasco picked up the victory.
Lou Piniella Quote: Sweet Lou is just as frustrated with the Cubs hitting as the players are. From the AP recap, " We hit a few balls hard,'' Piniella said. " We had a chance in the eighth inning, a big chance ... I don't know, I think I'm going to go to a casino in Indiana and play snake eyes. I don't know what else to say, I'll be honest with you. Look, one of these days we'll start swinging the bats, that's all I can say."
Texas 6 Oakland 7, 13 Innings: There were four blown saves in this game, which lead to the 13 innings. Daric Barton's single in the 13th inning that scored Landon Powell would prove to be the winning run. Despite blowing the save earlier, Tyson Ross picked up the victory as the A's moved to first place in the AL West.
Milwaukee 3 Atlanta 11: The light hitting Braves unleashed their offense against Milwaukee and starter Dave Bush. Troy Glaus homered and drove in three runs to go along with Eric Hinske's three RBIs for the Braves. Tim Hudson gave up six hits, no runs, in six innings of work to pick up the victory. The Brewers have the worst home record in the majors.
St. Louis 3 Houston 6: Boom outta here! Wife beater Brett Myers six innings giving up eight hits, two runs, and striking out three. Crazy Eyes Pence and Big Puma Lance Berkman both homered in the game for Houston.
Detroit 0 NY Yankees 0: This game was postponed after the top of the first.
Colorado 0 Philadelphia 0: This game was also postponed.
Only the Pirates are bad enough not to make history.
ReplyDeleteThat must be a typo on Yahoo!. The Phillies game never got underway.
