After seeing David Wright wearing that ridiculous batting helmet last night, I've decided to chronicle the epic fail known as the 2009 Mets season instead of the normal Foul Ball post. JFein has already done a similar post, so I will try to keep this one different.
- Before the season even started the Mets were already a disaster. Their inaugural patch that they chose to celebrate their new ballpark Citi Field, was kind of plain. Let Stephen Colbert do the rest of the explaining.

- After Citi spent over $400 million for the naming rights to the Mets new field. Then they abruptly go into bankruptcy and want to back out of the deal. Citi eventually received a bailout from taxpayers and were able to keep their name at the Mets new stadium. Thus the Mets new stadium is either called Bailout Park or Shiti Field.
- If you are a little league team, then don't ask the Mets to host a pregame parade.
- First off the Mets have been devastated by injuries this season. Three out of their four best players have been hurt all season. I can't remember the last time Jose Reyes played. Carlos Delgado hurt his hip. And Carlos Beltran has been out since the All-Star break. And that doesn't even count the other nine players on the disabled list.
- The Mets though can't blame their horrible season completely on the injuries. They haven't played smart baseball all season. Take Ryan Church's base running mistake in Los Angeles. During the 11th inning of a game against Los Angeles, Church completely missed third base. His run was erased and the Mets went on to lose the game.

- Luis Castillo made of the dumbest plays ever to lose a game for the Mets. With K-Rod on the mound and with two outs, A-Rod popped up. Only one problem though, Castillo dropped the pop up. Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira both scored to beat the Mets.

- To continue the theme of Mets bad defense, Daniel Murphy dropped an easy pop up in the outfield. Two runs scored and the Mets lost the game 2-1 to the Marlins. That lead to this quote from Santana after the game, "It's one mistake that he made. It cost us the whole ballgame, but it's part of the game,"It's one mistake that he made. It cost us the whole ballgame, but it's part of the game."

- Murphy continued to suck at defense throughout the season. He committed another error in the outfield that lead to another Mets loss. Then the Mets moved Murphy to 1st base and he committed an error to St. Louis that cost the Mets another game.
- The disaster of a team was not confined to the field. GM Omar Minaya accused Daily News Mets beat writer Adam Rubin of angling for a front office job. Minaya had to apologize the next day.

- Trailing 9-7 with runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth inning against the hated Phillies, Jeff Francoeur lined into an unassisted triple play to Eric Bruntlett to end the game. Only something like that can happen to the Mets.
- The Mets would continue to catch no breaks during the season. Their best player who was actually still playing David Wright, was beamed across the head by Giants pitcher Matt Cain. Wright received a concussion and was the 2,198 member of the Mets placed on the DL during the season.
- Wright's concussion lead to this. I'm still speechless over this helmet.
You were definitely (never know how to spell that) right. Great foul ball. One of the best ever. I personally would've rather seen you right about the Phils Giants game but this works as a nice substitute. To believe that some people had the Mets winning the divison and even...THE NLCS!!!! is/was crazy....As a Phils fan I am currently trying to come up with an acrostic poem for the M-E-T-S but Im drawing a blank so all I have is Must Enjoy This Season. (someone has got to come up with a better one....)
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the last time Jose Reyes played.
ReplyDeleteChip Carey's line during the White Sox-Yankees game Sunday on TBS was "Aaron Boone will come back from open-heart surgery faster than Jose Reyes does for his hamstring."
+1, Chip Carey
