Foul Ball: I Like Freddy Sanchez

Foul Ball is your daily baseball recap

7 Giants 3 Phillies: I loved this game for a variety of reasons. First I was actually there and had good seats. We were down the third base line, just a little way from the dugout. Second the Giants won. Third the Giants beat the Phillies with their ground attack. And fourth because Freddy Sanchez instantly had an impact on his new team. Sanchez made his debut for the Giants after being traded from Pittsburgh. Sanchez went 2 for 4 with two RBI's and one run scored. The best part of this game was in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the Giants down 3-1 and with two outs and Cole Hamels pitching the inning looked over. Especially with Barry Zito coming up to bat. Then Zito gets a broken bat hit that somehow keept the inning alive. The Eugenio Velez reached base, to have Sanchez drive them in with a double. Then Ryan Howard committed a throwing error, which scored Sanchez. The Giants were up 4-3 and never looked back.

The Giants-Phillies game pumped me up so much that I had to share this video. Former Giants broadcaster Russ Hodges, you might remember him from this call, had his own home run call like most broadcasters. The phrase "Bye-Bye Baby" was eventually made into a song. And after a Giants player hits a home run they play this song. Even though the Giants didn't hit a home run in the game, they still won and I wanted to share it with you.

18 Red Sox 10 Orioles: Now when I was at the Giants game yesterday, I kept looking over at the out-of-town scoreboard and noticing the Red Sox-Orioles game. I noticed it because I thought instead of the Orioles-Red Sox game, that it was really the Patriots-Ravens game. Look at this box score. It's insane. The Red Sox scored 18 runs off of 23 hits. And not to be outdone the Orioles sccored 10 runs on 15 hits. What's with the Orioles and high scoring games?

11 Indians 1 Tigers: Maybe the Tigers should have traded for Victor Martinez. Because they were shut down by all people, Carl Pavano. Pavano went eight inning giving up six hits and only one run. The only player the Indians haven't traded, Grady Sizemore, hit a two-run home run in the game.

3 Florida 2 Cubs: With the game tied at 1 in the ninth inning, Cubs third baseman Jake Fox homered to give the Cubs the one run lead. Then former Marlins reliever Kelly Gregg gave up solo home runs to both Cody Ross and Dan Uggla in the ninth inning, to blow the game and the save for the Cubs. The Cubs are a half of game behind the Cardinals in the Central and are two games behind the Giants and Rockies in the wild card.

5 Diamondbacks 2 Mets: You know the Mets are bad if they are on the verge of being swept by Arizona. Gerardo Parra and Chad Tracy both drove in two runs for Arizona. Jon Garland went the complete game giving up two runs, seven hits, zero walks, and two strikeouts.

6 Brewers 1 Padres: Kevin Coreia must just pitch well against the Giants because they are his former team. Because he stunk against the Brewers, going 6 1/3 innings giving up three runs, 2 hits, and three walks. Oh, someone has just informed me that the Padres offense sucks. Sorry, Kevin.

  1. Carl Pavano is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA against the Tigers this season. He's the pitching equivalent to Luke Scott.

  2. The O's have 4 rookie starters and the 1 veteran pitcher leads the Majors in HR allowed. In short, the O's suck.
