Foul Ball: Brewers, Red Sox Slumping and Nationals Surging

Foul Ball is your daily baseball recap

9 A's 8 Red Sox in 11: This game made me laugh out loud. On the night Boston retired Jim Rice's number, Jonathon Papelbon blew the save in the ninth inning to the pitiful A's. Oakland rallied from a three run deficit in the ninth inning with help from Nick Green's two throwing errors. Oakland added two more runs in the eleventh to pick up the win.

3 Giants 2 Pirates: What has to happen for Barry Zito can get some run support? I guess he has to go surfing again or play his guitar. Zito picked up the no decision after giving up nine hits, one run, and six strikeouts. I don't know what got into Eugenio Velez last night, but he hit a home run last night that only a couple guys could hit. Velez finished the night off with two RBI's.

4 Mets 0 Rockies: Right now I'm a huge Mets fan. And each time they beat the Rockies I become a bigger fan. Four different Mets drove in runs in the game. Mike Pelfrey went 6 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and zero runs. The Rockies left nine men on base and hit into two double plays.

10 Cardinals 0 Dodgers: I was wondering why I was having such a good mourning. Now I realized why. Despite giving up nine Dodgers hits, the Cardinals pitching staff held them to no runs behind starting pitcher Adam Wainwright. St. Louis scored six runs in the sixth inning and four in the eighth. The Dodgers have now lost three games in a row. Celebration!

5 Twins 3 White Sox: Despite picking up the loss, Mark Buehrle broke a record in the game. Buehrle set a record of 45 straight outs. Surpassing his own teammate Bobby Jenks. Nick Punto hit a two-run single and Brendan Harris added another RBI in the four run seventh inning for the Twins. Right now both the White Sox and Twins are two games behind the Tigers in the AL Central.

6 Rays 2 Yankees: Chocolate Crunch didn't exactly have a good night. Sabathia gave up nine hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Five different Rays players drove in runs, including a home run by Evan Longoria. Also the two golden boys Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter committed errors in the game.

4 Marlins 3 Braves: Ross Gload connected for a two-run game-winning home run last night for the Marlins. Rafael Soriano blew only his second save in 16 chances. And let's just say Bobby Cox didn't like the balls and strikes being called in the night.

Bobby Cox Quote, from the AP: “The strike zone was so tight on balls on the knees all night long,” Cox said. “Raffy could have had at least one strike on the first hitter and maybe not walked him. The count should have been 2-2 on the pinch-hitter. … He didn’t get the low strikes. It could have made a difference.” I can see a suspension coming for Mr. Cox.

8 Nationals 3 Brewers: What has gotten into the Washington Nationals? This is there fourth win in a row! And right now their lineup has been hitting the cover off of the ball. Three different Nationals players hit home runs in the game. The slumping Brewers are two games under .500 and 4.5 games behind first place.
