Foul Ball: Rain!

Foul Ball is your daily baseball recap

Rain ripped through the East Coast last night. The Mets/Pittsburgh game was postponed. The Giants/Nationals game was also postponed. Randy Johnson will attempt for his 300th win in a doubleheader tomorrow.

Also a busy day in Atlanta. First they release Tom Glavine and then trade for Nate McLouth. Say goodbye to old Tigers Stadium. Julio Lugo is ready to comeback full time for the Red Sox. With the White Sox improving, trade talks simmer down.

9 Rays 0 Royals: To use a Dennis Green phrase, "the Royals are who, we thought they were." Kansas City continues to struggle, this time they were shutout and were only able to get two hits in the entire game. Jeff Niemann had a perfect game heading into the fifth inning, and finished with a two-hit shutout. Ben Zobrist hit a grand slam in the game for the Rays. Mt. Guillen, no not Ozzie, but Jose, went 0-for-3 in the game with two strikeouts. I'm surprised he also hasn't blown his lid yet.

4 Rangers 2 Yankees: The Rangers scored three runs in the first inning off of Andy Pettite. Scott Feldman went 6 1/3 innings before letting the bullpen pick up the victory for the Rangers. Mrs. Teixeria's husband was a late scratch from the game.

10 Red Sox 5 Tigers: Josh Beckett had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. With two outs in the seventh, Curtis Granderson broke up the no-hitter with a clean single. D.L. Drew hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and the Red Sox also scored six runs in the eighth inning. Tiger designated hitter Jeff Larish killed the team by going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and he left three men on base.

8 Angels 1 Blue Jays: No Roy Halladay, no problem for the Angels. Bobby Abreu hit a two-run home run in the first inning. While Jerred Weaver had a career high 10 strikeouts in the game. The usually sure-handed Scott Rolen committed an error in the game, his fifth of the season.

3 Cubs 2 Braves in 11: Another Cubs-Braves game that went extra innings. Yesterday the Braves won, and last night the Cubs won. Micah Hoffpauir singled in Derek Lee in the 11th inning for the winning run of the game. Kelly Gregg picked up his nineth save of the season. Chicago actually hit into four double plays in the game.

5 A's 3 White Sox: Jason Giambi, Bobby Crosby, and Landon Powell all homered in the game for Oakland. The White Sox didn't help themselves by hitting into two double plays.

9 Brewers 6 Swimming Mammals: Ryan Braun hit a two-run home run in the second and a Emilio Bonifacio throwing error allowed another run to score. Trevor Hoffman picked up his 14th save of the season, and he still hasn't allowed a run this season. Emilio has nine errors of the season. I really thought he was the real deal.

6 Astros 4 Rockies: Houston jumped out to a three run lead in the first inning and kept the lead for the rest of the game. This was one of these games that no team wanted to win. Houston left six men on base, while the Rockies hit into two double plays.

5 Phillies 1 Padres: Ryan Howard hit a two-run home run, J.A. Happ won the game, J.C. Romero made his season debut for the Phillies last night. The Phillies have won six straight and now head to LA to faceoff against the best team in the majors.

  1. Tough stretch for the Tigers: Boston finishing off the sweep today (likely), the Angels (who always give the Tigers fits) and a five-game, four day series with the Good Guys in Chicago.

  2. I'm guessing you are a huge Phillies fan, right now, eh Keith? ;-)

And assuming that the Giants actually get a chance to play a baseball game and the Phils keep on winning, this could be the Giants' chance to get back in the thick of things in the NL West...
