Foul Ball: Interleague Sucks

(Kiss me Ozzie)

Foul Ball is your daily baseball recap

For my minny rant today, I want to talk to you about interleague play. When MLB started playing interleague games back in the late 90's it was a cool idea. Let's match up teams that are geographic rivals, like the Mets vs. Yankees, Giants vs. A's, and Dodgers vs. Angels. But MLB had to ruin a good thing, by matching other AL teams with no geographic rivalry. Who wants to watch the Rockies vs. Rays? Just have the teams play their geographic rivalry's and that's it. I want to see the Giants play the Phillies more than two series a year. And I think fans would want to see their team play more games against their league rivals.

4 White Sox 1 Cubs: Ozzie Guillen gets the last laugh in against the Cubs. White Sox pitcher John Danks pitched seven innings giving up four hits, one run, and striking out nine people. Alexi Ramirez homered in the first inning and three other White Sox hitters knocked in runs in the game. The Cubs have gone 4-6 in their last ten games.

4 Reds 3 Braves: In the none-interleague game, Reds pitcher Micah Owings hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Reds the lead. Owings pitched six innings giving up six hits and two runs. Losing pitcher Javier Vazquez pitched eight innings giving up four runs and four hits. Jay Bruce hit his 16th home run of the season for the Reds in the game.

7 Blue Jays 1 Phillies: Scott Richmond struck out a career high 11 batters in eight innings. Richmond gave up five hits and one run in the game. Rod Barajas, Aaron Hill, and ex-Phillie Scott Rolen all homered in the game. The Phillies hit into two double plays in the game.

3 Nationals 2 Yankees: John Lannan, a local product from New York, went into the launching pad and allowed four hits, two runs, in 8 1/3 innings. Former Yankee Nick Johnson knocked in two runs in the game, and Adam Dunn homered.

5 A's 4 Dodgers: The A's committed three errors in the game, but they still beat the best team in baseball. Even though Jack Cust whiffed on a fly ball, he did a two-run home run in the third inning. Even with all the errors, the A's were able to turn two double plays.

  1. I thought Ozzie & Lou only made a bad rapping Chevy commercial together...

I don't mind Interleague play. I do mind the unbalanced schedule (18 games with the Royals?). Neither will be going away anytime soon, though.
