Foul Ball: Goodbye May

Foul Ball is your daily baseball recap

Well the first two months of the baseball season is over. And now we head into my favorite part of the season. The Dog Days of Summer. These are the months that separate the good from the mediocre. Every once in a while you will get a 2007 Colorado Rockies team or another Mets collapse, but they are rare.

These months are crucial to the playoffs. These are the months when you see teams fall apart. These are the months are when teams make a last-second trade to turn around their season and make a playoff push. So goodbye to May, and hello to the Dog Days of Summer.

5 Indians 4 Yankees: Not even the Yankees could escape the mediocrity known as the Cleveland Indians. O.K. they only lost once in the series. Leigh Teixeira's husband drove in all three runs for the Yankees but that wouldn't be enough. Jhonny Peralta drove in three runs for the Tribe including the game-winning run in the ninth inning. Perennially hurt pitcher Kerry Woods picked up the win.

4 Phillies 2 Natinals: Good day for the Phillies and Jamie Moyer. The old man had been struggling lately, but lucky for him he got to face the Nationals. Moyer picked up the victory going six innings and only giving up one run. This victory was a milestone for Moyer, as he picked up his 250th win. He is the 11th-left handed pitcher to hit that plateau.

Jamie Moyer Quote: From the AP: “It’s not about the personal things, I’m more excited about us winning,” Moyer said. “I really haven’t thought about (winning 250). It takes so much effort to prepare and play. I was taught to play the game as a team, not as an individual. When you play 20-some years, some of these things can happen.” That's why this man is capable of raising seven children and you are not.

5 Giants 3 Cardinals: Rich Aurilla picked the right time to hit his first home run of the season. He hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning to help the Giants win the game and take two out of three from the Cardinals. Aaron Rowand keeps improving in the leadoff spot by hitting a double and scoring two runs.

3 Tigers 0 Orioles: Edwin Jackson continues his domination over the opposing teams by shutting out the Orioles and only allowing two hits. Orioles phenom Matt Wieters went 0-for-3 in the game. He's a bust, send him back down to the minors.

5 Brewers 2 Reds: The Brewers swept the Reds and took control of the NL Central. Yovani Gallardo picked up the win and Trevor Hoffman picked up his 13th save.

3 Twins 2 Rays: Twins avoided the sweep behind Nick Blackburn's performance on the mound and Brendan Harris home run.

  1. Better the bat, instead of the big wad of tobacco he is usually chewing on.
