There were only 9 games being played yesterday. 12 teams had the day off. So yesterday was a great day to catch up on some reading.
8 Pirates 5 Mets: Andy LoRoche and the Pirates took advantage of a rare night off for the Mets bullpen. LoRoche drove in three runs while the Pirates scored five runs in the eighth inning. Adam LoRoche and Jack Wilson each had three hits as the Pirates only won their second game in six.
6 White Sox 2 A's: Jim Thome's three-run home in the eighth inning would prove to be the game winning home run of the game. White Sox reliever Matt Thornton struck out the side in the eighth inning to pick up the win. Thome's home run in the game was his 550th career. This win brought the White Sox to .500 the first time since May.
5 Reds 3 Cardinals: The Reds were up a creek without a paddle after the first inning. Starting pitcher Edinson Volquez lasted only one inning before coming out of the game. Mike Lincoln and four Reds relievers lasted the rest of the game to pick up the win for the Reds. A three-run third inning for the Reds would be all the wins the team would need. Dusty Baker'd!
7 Marlins 4 Brewers: Lucky for the Cardinals the Brewers lost to Florida. The Marlins scored five runs in the sixth inning to rally for the win
1 Orioles 0 Mariners: The Orioles won this snoozefest of a game. Adam Jones scored the only run of the game off a Aubrey Huff sacrifice fly. Rich Hill picked up the win by going seven innings and only allowing two hits and no runs.
