The Baseball Update is a look at the happenings around Major League Baseball
The AL East showed their strength over the past weekend in interleague play. The Phillies and Mets took two out of three games from the Yankees and the Red Sox. And the Braves swept then first place Toronto Blue Jays. After what I witnessed this weekend, the NL East is definitely the best division in baseball.
Team of the Week: Philadelphia takes the award this week. They have gone 7-3 in the last ten games and took two out of three games in New York against the Yankees. One spot that has Philly fans worried is Brad Lidge. Lidge blew two saves in the past ten games. Is he reverting back to his old Houston Astro self? I don't think so, because every closer goes through streaks where they might blow a couple of saves. They are right now 0.5 games ahead of the Mets in first place. And I do think they will stay in first for the rest of the season.
Worst team of the Week: Same as every week, the Washington Nationals take this spot. This team should just destroy themselves. They are a disgrace to baseball. If I was Stephen Strasberg I wouldn't sign with this team when they draft him.
Great Pickup: The free agent award of the year goes to Philadelphia for signing Raul Ibanez and not re-signing Pat Burrell. Ibanez leads this team in home runs(17), RBI's(44), and batting average(.347). This has definitely been the best free agent pickup this season. Then again Ibanez is hitting on a bandbox.
Where's the Fans: As we all know, no one shows up to Florida Marlins games in Miami. And the Marlins have repaid the fans that do show up by going 9-14 at home and 12-12 on the road. I guess if more fans would show up at the Marlins home games, they would win more games.
Where's the Fans, Part 2: No one also shows up at Atlanta Braves home games. The Braves have gone 11-12 at home. If you hear crickets at your home games, would you care who wins?

ReplyDeleteHe'll sign with the Natinals. He doesn't want to end up changing tires at Costco next to Matt Harrington.
Great point, RJBO. Also he doesn't want to end up like Matt Bush or Brien Taylor.

ReplyDeleteWhile I am certainly not denying that Citizens Bank Park is a bandbox, the Phillies have been more successful this year on the road by a long shot (the Phils actually have a losing record at home) and while I do not have the numbers specifically pertaining to Ibanez, the Phils have hit more homers this year on the road than at home as well (although I guess that # can be explained by the fact that the Phils played at Yankee Stadium for 3 games...)
Aren't the Phillies and the mets in the NL East?
