Foul Ball: Timmy, No!

Foul Ball is your daily baseball recap

10 Giants 6 Brewers: Going into the season the San Francisco Giants were looked at as team that can pitch, but not score any runs. Well the exact opposite happened on their opening day. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum lasted only three innings, in the shortest start of his career. Lincecum gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and struck out 5. The Giants offense powered the team to a win. Aaron Rowand, who struggled last year and into the spring training, broke out with a 2-run home run and 3 RBI's for the day. Travis Ishikawa also knocked in three runs with a triple. And both Bengie Molina and Randy Winn both had home runs for the day. The Giants were ready to play today.

5 Red Sox 3 Rays: Dustin Pedroia homered on the second pitch he saw and Josh Beckett struck out 10, as the Red Sox picked up the victory. Jason Varitek also homered in the re-match of the AL Championship Series. And Jonathon Papelbon picked up the save. But there were no antics from Papelbon. Rays starter James Shields continues to struggle at Fenway.

4 Braves 0 Phillies: The Phillies better hope they are slow starters, because they haven't looked good starting this season. Jair Jurrjens and four Braves relievers combined for a six-hit shutout of the Phillies. Both Kelly Johnson and Chipper Jones both had solo home runs. Old man Jamie Moyer went 5 innings giving up eight hits and all four runs. The Phillies left 11 runners on base. Are they the powerful Phillies or the 07 Giants? Is it time for panic yet for the Phillies?

6 A's 4 Angels: The A's offense finally started clicking yesterday. Jack Cust had two hits and tow RBI's. Travis Buck and Mark Ellis each had RBI singles. Trevro Cahill pitched 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in his major league debut for the A's. Brad Zeigler came in for the A's to shut down the Angels. No word yet, if the cougars were watching.

4 Padres 2 Dodgers: Heath Bell started the post-Trevor Hoffman era in San Diego by picking up the save against hated rival Los Angeles. Manny went 1-for-4 and stranded two base runners in scoring position. In total the Dodgers left 8 runners on base. Meanwhile Chris Young pitched 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 runs for the Padres. The Padres were reminded why opening day is great.

  1. I am not worried about the Phillies. Yet....

  2. Please keep doing this feature. It's great when I can't follow the games (or the Phillies for that matter) every day.

Oh, and as far as the Phillies go. The Phillies were trailing 10-3 at the start of the bottom of the 7th. It's now the top of the 8th and the Fightin' Phils lead 11-10. Horrible pitching by the Braves did them in. There were at least 4 bases loaded walks in the inning.
