Lemieux who returns with the San Jose Sharks to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit tonight, is still not liked. The rivalry started in 96, when Lemieux who was with the Colorado Avalanche, he smashed Detroit player Kris Draper into the boards. The rivalry between the Avalanche and Lemieux was started between them and Detroit.
The rivalry was one of the most heated during the mid-90's. Everyone remembers goaltenders Patrick Roy and Chris Osgood fighting mid-ice during a playoff game. And Lemieux hasn't forgotten about how much Detroit hates him.
"Probably no different than what it used to be," Lemieux said of the reaction he expects tonight. "I don't expect to become a fan favorite in Detroit. It's not something I worry about. I worry about playing the game and helping out the club the best I can."This game will also have a playoff type of feel. San Jose leads the western conference in points. But everyone knows the playoffs will go through Detroit. This should be a great with a lot of action.
