Sweet Lou Calls It a Career
It was already decided that Lou Piniella was going to retire at the end of the season. Because of his mother's failing health, Sweet Lou decided to end his career yesterday with a lopsided loss against Atlanta.
A choked up Piniella had this to say in the post-game press conference: "Cried a little bit after the game. This will be the last time I put on a uniform. This has been very special for me. I'll go home, do what I have to do there... and enjoy my retirement."
I'm sad that one of the more enjoyable managers in baseball had to go out this way. Judging though by his actions and tirades against the umpires over the years it's kind of fitting. Piniella leaving the game in a cloud of flames.
